- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2018Apartment 14F by C.M. Saunders is one of the best ghost stories I've ever read in my entire life, particularly because of the shocking ending. I wanted to know more about the history of the ghost and her agenda, but I'm just as happy to be left wanting more. I love the way the author built up the suspense by revealing the paranormal occurrences taking place in the apartment as Jerry waits in line to see a fortune teller.
The short story, Little Dead Girl, has a major discrepancy, which disrupted the flow of the story. One minute the main character, Jeff, mentions waking up to the ghost being in his apartment, the next minute he is stating she can't follow him into his apartment. (Which is it, Saunders?) The ending is bizarre, yet somehow predictable.
There is also an essay by the author between the two short stories, explaining how Apartment 14F came into existence. I didn't read all of it...after just a few paragraphs, the essay began sucking away the enjoyment the story gave me. The essay seemed better suited for the author's website, not an addition to the content. Not sure why Saunders felt the need to discuss the history of writing a short story, in any case.
If you're a fan of Asian horror, you definitely need to read Apartment 14F.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2019The foreigner in question is an English teacher named Jerry who travels to Beijing for a teaching assignment. Strange things begin to happen in the apartment 14F. Jerry tries to make sense of it all as his fear grows and his sanity wanes. A well thought-out plot with a good twist. Please try this story. A bonus is the informative discussion of communist China in the modern age and the Chinese interest in supernatural things. The scene in which Jerry visits the fortune teller is truly memorable and disturbing, B rating.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2022If you like horror or ghost stories with a good plot twist, I recommend this book for you.
The storyline is amazing and it flows well.
I like the description and background story of spooky Beijing.
The story is about the ghost in apartment 14F that always haunted Jeff for no certain reason. She just appears and haunts Jeff, he tries to explain to everyone but no one believes him.
Until he just accepts the fact that while he stays in this apartment, the ghost will become his constant companion, asleep or awake.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2017This eBook was an enjoyable way to kill time, the storyline was well thought out, flowing from one event to another, the characters were fleshed out with just enough background details so you not only got to know them, but even cared enough to stop them if they accidentally stepped in front of a bus. :)
Included was a Bonus Short titled "Little Dead Girl." While entertaining enough, it read like a rough draft. There was one particular scene (approximately two paragraphs) repeated almost word for word as a previous event, with the exception of the last sentence. Overall, the entire eBook could've used an editor to correct the accidental spelling errors, I say accidental as several were done intentionally to establish the existence of a slight language barrier.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2020The actual story, I liked. However, I think because the author had himself lived in China as a language instructor, it went way too deep into memoir territory, reflecting the experiences he had while living there. Too much background, cultural differences, and history lessons, when what I wanted was the ghost story. Because that consumed so much of the book, I had to rate low. However, for the ghost story itself, I would give it 4 stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2017I recently purchased this novella through Amazon Prime. I did not know what to expect and am not usually a fan of dark/horror fiction.
Surprisingly, I found with a couple of exceptions noted below that I enjoyed the story. It was original, for the most part, and intriguing. I was a little disappointed by the ending, but for me, the ending was not the important part. The story was important, and it flowed well. The author has obviously been to China, and the setting was quite interesting and detailed.
The first part of the has a lot of background information which perhaps could have been integrated more into the story, the old "showing rather than telling" issue. I did not really mind, though, and found it did really strengthen the story.
There were a few typos and other editing errors in the story which probably should have been cleaned up before publication but nothing that, in my opinion, detracted from the forward thrust of the novella.
I would recommend it.

Loved loved this short horror story. I couldn't put it down! Loved the characters and even though it's a horror, there was a certain comedy value in the dialect. I am big fan of horror fiction and this short story ticked all the boxes! Great download for the summer holiday or a short break, great value for money. New Biggest C M Saunders fan looking for my next!
