The author of the zombie epic “Pestilence Reigns” brings a new horror to the stars in this, his first foray in the science fiction genre. Blending tech and terror, monsters and marines, and leaping from claustrophobic corridors to the sprawling vacuum of space, Arachnocide is a non-stop tale of man against nature. You’ll never look at spiders the same again...

From the back cover: The ship is The Eden - Flagship vessel of Intex Industries' planet-seeding fleet. Over three miles in length, this deep-space craft is manned by a crew of thousands as she transports the vegetation and livestock needed to colonise new facilities on distant worlds.

She has an unwanted hitchhiker, an unknown lifeform introduced to the sealed sanctum and bringing with it chaos and unimaginable nightmares. An ageless entity driven only by the instinct to survive.

Those aboard The Eden are no longer crew — they are prey — hurled into a world of survival and horrifying violence. The odds are stacked against them as the vicious creature is relentless in its pursuit.

With The Eden locked on a course to civilisation, can the doomed crew stay alive long enough to prevent the spread of the deadliest creature unknown to humankind?

Ben Black is the author of the Black Undeath series, featuring Pestilence Reigns, an epic tale following the undead rising in Britain and War Ravages, detailing the the continuing spread of the plague as it threatens global infection. He is also the author of Arachnocide, a sci-fi tale of space-faring colonists and unstoppable alien spiders. Both books are the first in a series, and mark the beginning of just some of the post-apocalyptic and science fiction tales to come. Each book is rich with gruesome body-shock and horror elements that he incorporates to all his work, something also evident in the short, Dying Memory. This short tale ties in with Black Undeath series and gives just a taste of the crumbling world it’s set in without revealing too much of the main story.

Living in the North East of England, Ben Black's passions in life include horror, science fiction and fantasy in all different media: movies, books, comics and computer games. He lives with his wife and daughter, both of whom are supportive of his eccentricities, if not fully understanding of the worlds in which he lives and works.

Also a bass player and lyricist in a band, Ben tries to keep the dark and visceral content running through his music, too, though his primary creative outlet is his writing.

Sate your thirst for the undead (or giant mutant spiders in space) with his work.

This came up as a suggestion when another book with similar type of Arachnid.
This was a great read from beginning to end . Great characters , story development, and very imaginative.
I would say if you are into what the title suggests , giant Arachnids in space .
I do not like to make comparisons to other genres , but it did have the feel of reading any number of Aliens novels , yes Alien , Aliens , Alien3 etc…..
But, it was done different enough to be really scary and action packed and characters you really liked .
And I was a good length , very good pacing and not bad in any way .
I was hoping for a sequel, and one is mentioned on Ben Black’s social media and cannot wait for it
I did buy this digital, but now I am going to buy out the paperback and read it again .

5.0 out of 5 stars Always bet on Ben Black!

When I saw that the second novel from Ben Black was available I snapped it up without hesitation.

The author really shows his versatility with “Arachnocide”; while his debut novel “Pestilence Reigns” was a sprawling apocalyptic epic this book is a zippy sci-fi romp topped with lashings of Black’s trademark gory body-horror. What I find most remarkable is how a story - which could so easily have fallen foul of the lazy cliches which plague the science-fiction genre - manages to stay fresh and inventive throughout and always places character and the essence of humanity at the heart of every action.

This is Black’s best work to date and I can’t wait to see what he does next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written ALIENS homage.
Reviewed in Canada on August 19, 2021

Ben Black is a craftsman at illustrating his scenes, environment, monsters, and combat. Some of his paragraphs are worth re-reading for the sheer effort of language put into his work. Black is a huge fan of the ALIENS franchise and this is a love-letter to that universe. Even though it shares a lot of similarities, Black puts his own spin on the genre and blends together sci-fi and horror with the same aplomb as Alien. Characters are fun and their interactions (particularly with the synthetic man) are genuine and likeable.

My biggest qualm with Black's work, and this is an issue I had with Pestilence Reigns as well. The book is too long and Black's writing prowess is his own downfall. He wants to illustrates scenes to the best of his ability. He wants you to feel the goo under your shoes and dripping on your face, but he has a nasty habit of over-describing to the point where the work feels very bloated. In many instances, he's actually re-describing something he had already written. With a scalpel, sledgehammer, and maybe a jackhammer, pages and pages of over-description can be carved out.

Ben Black is a great writer, but his own eagerness for description really bogs down his work from shining and I think with the help of a ruthless editor, he can really step up to the next level and become a master of horror.

Although too long, Arachnocide is horrific, gory, explosive, and well-written. Ben Black's talent is worth your time.
