Artifacts, Dragons, and Other Lethal Magic (Dowser Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 1,662 ratings

I wasn’t even remotely interested in collecting the third instrument of assassination. It was far better for everyone involved — and for Warner, specifically — if I just let it be. And since I was the only one who could retrieve the artifacts, I figured it was my call to make. I was wrong. And though that wasn’t unusual, I was just so … so … wrong … about everything. I was wrong about who I was protecting and why. I was wrong about who and what I could control. And I was wrong about who I was becoming. Baker of cupcakes, maker of trinkets, half-witch, half-dragon, dowser, alchemist … Why couldn’t I just be Jade?

Artifacts, Dragons, and Other Lethal Magic is the sixth book in the Dowser series, which is set in the same universe as the Oracle, Reconstructionist, Amplifier, Archivist, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series. While it is not necessary to read all the series, in order to avoid spoilers the ideal reading order of the Adept Universe begins with Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1).

Absolutely love this series! This latest book (book 6) did not disappoint. I like it too because there's not too much sexual content. The two main characters kiss hotly a couple times- but that's about it. So that leaves room for much more fun adventure and story line. I would not recommend starting reading with this book- definitely start with book one of this Dowser series, including the 2 "Oracle series" books, that are thrown in the middle there. Characters do get mentioned or brought into this book from there so I suggest reading everything in the chronological way the Author suggests. This book finishes her Instruments of Assassination journey from the last two books and I'm looking forward to her next big adventure! Jade's BFF relationships are wonderful too- they make me love them more each book, I'm avidly waiting to see what Kett's new big secret power is. The only thing that is disappointing now is that I have to wait for the next book...

I like this whole series, as well as the spin-offs. The characters are enjoyable and I particularly like how the spin-offs give you a different view of the protagonists. How people see Jade and how Jade sees herself are very different. The writing is of high quality and, while sometimes I find the fight scenes to be a bit disjointed (sometimes people who are supernaturally fast seem to lag behind at critical moments, and sometimes people seem to change position in a hard to visualize fashion- this happens all the time in supernatural novels, though), I like the inner dialogue and the overall world building despite the Dragons being a bit thick at times. I am looking forward to many more books and spin-offs in this entertaining series. Oh, and reading about cupcakes makes me very hungry. I even made a batch for my wife's recent birthday but they looked pretty shabby (tasted good, though!).

This is the 6th book in the series and it doesn't disappoint. Jade and the gang are still after Shailaja, although Jade wants to keep everybody safe and so doesn't go looking for awhile which slows the book down a bit but allows the reader to read about some good sex and even better food descriptions. Once Jade realizes she's going to have to take out the rabid koala the action moves fast until the end. I was worried that this was going to be the end of the series but from what I read it seems like there has to be more - hopefully with a spiced up love life (I think Warren is a bit dull, I really wish she'd hook-up with Kett, he'd keep her hopping) and some more challenges.

This is SUCH a great book. When I started this series a few years ago, I was just beginning to appreciate something that has become a serious "love" of mine. That being the notion of the family one creates. Jade has created a family that she fights for, that she would die for. That idea is woven through a tale of unique magic, fun snark, and moving romance. Thanks to the author for such a lovely gift.

Love this series and author! I do want to know where the cowardly sorcerer went. He is definitely going to cause more trouble.

    Onto the next book! YAY!!!!!

I just finished the 6th book in the Dowser Series (plus the 2 other additional books in the series). The characters were well written and fully believable. A scary thought, right. To be able to vicariously travel the world was a dream come true for me. From the beach to the snow capped mountains, from the great Northwest to Mississippi, they all were real to me. I loved reading about all of the real retail stores and areas mentioned in the books. Yes, I looked up each and every one. The development of Jade, Kandy, Kett, Drake Desmond, Rochelle, Beau, and Warner, plus all of the rest of the supporting characters added so much to this epic tale. Now, I want to head to the kitchen and make some cupcakes.

Jade and Warner are tasked to find the third instrument of assassination which will draw out Shialin, the rabid koala after she attacks the treasure keeper and Jade's father. This book ends on a major change and not sure what will happen to Jade and her friends. Because I have been following the author's direction in reading order, I go back to the Oracle series. It could be a while before I get back to Jade and see what happens next.

Wow! I'd about give this a 5, but it couldn't stand alone without all the previous nook. Still, it is an impressive wrap up with unexpected (at least by me) twists. Talk about the long game. And a terrific hug to end it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars They just keep getting better and better!

I'd have to say that this series just keeps getting better and better. When I started the sixth Dowser book I was trepidatious because I couldn't imagine where Meghan Doidge would take the series after the third instrument of assassination was found and made impotent against Dragons. Well, I certainly shouldn't have worried. This book went not at all where I thought it would, I knew Jade would have to get the third IOA and she'd have to try to kill the rabid koala but I had NO idea we'd end up where we did. WOW.

It is wonderful to see just how supportive Jade's friends are and it's always fun to read about them. Know that everyone gets hurt and you won't know until the end who survives. You'll probably be angry with the dragons just like I was and you'll pine for the next Dowser book. This one just came out so we have a long way to wait!

You'll love how this book forces Jade to face who she's becoming and it also brings her relationship with the nine dragons to a head. I can't say more without ruining something. GO read this SLOWLY, savor it like Jade savors her chocolate. We have to make this last the year. You will love it though, seriously, a five star book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Betrayals and manipulations lead to "I quit "
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 27, 2018
Awesome. She has been used to find 2 instruments of assassination but she refuses to find the third. However that is not acceptable to the dragons and once again she finds herself on the path to find the third. Betrayals, manipulations, the killer kid and finally imprisonment are her rewards for helping the dragons find the instruments. Not even the fact that the killer kid was after their blood will sway them. A really good read but really felt that this should have been the final book in the series especially as she walks out on them with the words "I quit". You really couldn't get a better ending then that.
