As Though Everything Depended on Me Paperback – October 10, 2012

Journalists, if they are honest and capable, are among the strongest guardians of democracy. No tyranny can tolerate them, no democracy can function without them. For this reason they are among the most endangered people on our planet. In the tumultuous period of German history between the World Wars a brave journalist, having survived the horrors of the First World War and determined to prevent another war, had to oppose all forms of chauvinism, especially the rising tide of Nazism. In that time of moral degeneration Kurt Lenz raised his eloquent voice against barbarism. When the barbarians triumphed, he refused to flee. He believed that each one of us has to act as though everything depended on him. His type of courage, greater than that of even the bravest frontline soldier, could have only one outcome at that time. With this novel the author wishes to pay tribute to those courageous journalists and their counterparts in today's world.

I am an Australian, but I have lived in many other countries and visited all the continents. I have taught several languages in various countries (German, English, Esperanto, Latin) and gained my MA as a historian. Hence my books range over many periods of history and places, though I notice that the 19th century, the time of most intense colonialism, is often the focus. My two most recent books, "Soaring with Cockatoos" and "Paradise Stolen", deal with the catastrophic impact of European settlement on the Aborigines of Australia. A book about to appear, "As Though Everything Depended on Me", portrays a talented and courageous journalist who opposed the rising tide of Nazism -- and at that time the outcome could be only tragedy for him.

Another period that attracts my attention is the first century (AD, as we used to say). The Roman Empire straddled the known world, and is a fascinating study in itself. But I spent a lot of time researching the background of Jesus and wrote what I think may have been the true story of his life in "Reluctant Messiah". It may be of interest to readers that these English titles are all translations of my first literary language, Esperanto, in which I have published a dozen volumes.
