Perhaps you’re a wife about to embark on overseas life with your husband for the first time. You’re excited but also a little nervous, not knowing what to expect. Perhaps you’ve already been living overseas for a while and are feeling like you’re losing your vision for why you moved here in the first place. Living cross-culturally can be very draining, especially when trying to balance that with family needs. Catherine Shelton writes out of her experience of living for 11 years with her family in a remote part of Russia. Using the metaphor of building a home as a framework for her book, Catherine guides you through issues such as language and culture acquisition, socialising your kids, maintaining your sanity and, eventually, packing up and re-entering your home country. As she tells her story and shares her survival tips, she encourages and equips you to live your life overseas more joyfully and more intentionally.

A very useful manual to help the expatriate family adjust to living in a different culture from what they are used to. Case studies make it interesting, bring the point home, and reassure the reader that they are not alone in the need to find ways to adjust. This is good to read as a whole,to prepare for issues just around the corner that have not yet confronted the reader. However, it is also useful to pick out issues of current concern and read those sections at the time of need.
Nice to have it on kindle since there are so many books and other things one would like to carry around and it is often necessary to travel light.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read!

I really enjoyed reading this book. Not only did it deal with the practical side of living in a foreign country but it also dealt with the emotional problems one might face in that situation. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning to move abroad or who is already living in a different culture.

Living overseas in this century has many aspects which need preparation and many aspects to be faced when you get there, and Catherine writes from personal experience very helpfully. It is also helpful for us left at home to know how to support and pray for them to read of her experiences.
