    This is book 6 in a series of 12 books. I confess, the cover pulled me to look, but the prologue, hooked me instantly, because it was something deep and different which hit my heart and compelled me to read on. This is at its inception a deeply horrific story, that at times is difficult to read. If you have a true moral and ethical soul, you will cry, you will feel anger and despair because at it core, these horrors do exist in reality. I fell in love with the male protagonist Julian/Shade. The author has imbued him with great strength which he employs to protect himself from the overwhelming fragility and horror of his childhood. A childhood filled with sex slave trade from toddlers to adults of varring ages, which we are lead to think of as primarily women.

    The female protagonist Chelle, is a life experience foil to that of Shade. Never-the-less she has suffered great loss too, though different from Shade's. The love story is also unusual, but believable. Chelle's character and those of her daughters support a number of themes, especially the acceptance of Shade and all their love, affection and absolute respect for him and his for them. He almost immediately assumed a role of protector for Chelle and her daughters, a role he plays for his brothers/club and others.

    The subject matter, child sexual exploitation, and human sex slave trafficking is something that is basically taboo to talk about and discuss in virtually all social forums. WHY? Why are these crimes (and treason) heinous crimes in general, hidden, not investigated and prosecuted as they deserve? Shade acknowledges this failure of society and police to act. How he responds and acts is something that in the end, one has to applaud!

    I loved this story. I know I will read it again so, rather than relying on Amazon's Prime read for free again, I purchased the book. I am impressed with the author and have decided to read the series.

    All I can say is wow. (This review will contain spoilers). After being so disappointed in the last two heroines in this series, (especially Jemma), Shade’s book truly delivered pretty much in every way. First of all this book is really dark. I’ve read almost all of Jeanne St. James books and I don’t remember any of her books being this dark. The things that Shade endured as a child were disturbing and really hard to read. The fact that it went on for 10 years of his life was unbearable. It’s described a few times in this book and like I said, it was so hard to read. The fact that this actually does go on in this world makes me kind of sick.

    So Shade is truly a broken man, but has so much good in him despite what horrors he lived through. He shuts himself off from pretty much every one except his MC brothers who have become his only family and home. He was never educated, never went to school and can’t read (which he’s able to hide very well). He also speaks in a very slow deliberate manner because we come to find out later he has a learning disability and since he was a captive of some sick people his entire childhood, he was never able to learn and overcome it.

    When he meets Chelle, they are immediately drawn to each other. They have one of those immediate connections that are so rare in life. They are also complete opposites. I loved that Chelle was so open to him from the very beginning. Even though she knew he was in an MC, she never judged him. She trusted her gut impression of him. She was fascinated by him. She noticed his speech pattern right away (because she’s a librarian), and wanted to get down to the bottom of it and help him. Chelle was beautiful, loving, kind and accepting. I absolutely loved her.

    She hired him to paint her house and their relationship develops from there. She’s 10 years older than him but it totally worked here. I LOVED them together. And the way their relationship evolved was truly beautiful. Especially the way Shade learns to trust her and show her his physical and emotional scars. It was gut wrenching and my God my heart was just shattered for Shade. But to have Chelle listen to that and be there for him and show him love and tenderness was just —omg it was just so emotional and beautiful.

    Some other things I loved about this book- they are together for pretty much the entire book. There’s no push and pull, no second guessing. I LOVED her daughters!! The scene with them and Shade when he’s staying with them is one of my favorites in the entire book. I loved their HEA and I really hope her daughter Maddie ends up becoming a heroine in a later book 😉.

If you think Shades story is difficult, multiply it ten fold. He is an amazing character who suffered so much but walked through the fire-so broken but found his salvation in Chelle.     I have enjoyed this series immensely but this one pull on your heart string from start to finish. Please check your trigger warnings. Shade is part of the Blood Fury MC and works and the pet crematorium and this is how he meets Chell. Shade is very quiet and keeps to himself and struggles with how to word things and speaks very slowly to get the words right. He is also very protective over the old ladies in the MC and will go above and beyond to keep them safe. Chell is a single mom of two daughters and has done the best she could for them all her life living for them. When she meets Shade, she is drawn to him even though she knows he is younger. These two have a sweet comfort when they are together, they are both helping each other and keeping their relationship on the down low. He begins to open up to her and show her some of secrets from a terrible traumatic past. There is so much good to say about this story, but I don't want to give anything import away as it needs to be a surprise as you read this beautifully written story of hope, compassion, love and moving on from a past that has tried to break you only for you to come out stronger. This series is fantastic

    I love Jeanne's books, they are raw and genuine and real. Always uneasy, sometimes very difficult to read (because of what happened to the characters), but some, like this one are almost to much. As a mother I couldn't read some parts, some I read and could sleep after I did. I was forced to skip some of the memories after that. I even considered not finishing the book. I'm glad I did though. As difficult as it was, the story and their as happy as possible HEA was absolutely worth it. Thank you! Can't wait to read Rook's story.
    Keeps me wandering what it takes to creates such a strong story...

    Some authors can write a book with a tragic backstory due to a taboo/trigger event because they feel their audience wants it. They create a good book where you feel sad for the character but don't really feel what the character went through, how they overcame their tragic past and created a new life.

    Then there are authors who suck you into a character's life. Who can make you feel what the character went through without pages of gory details. Have you holding your breath as you watch them painfully build brick by brick their new life. You want them to have a happy ever after even though you know it has to go dark before it can stay light.

    Jeanne St James is one of those authors and this is one of those books. Shade's history was carefully drawn out with little snippets so you knew something bad had happened but you didn't know how bad until the big reveal. Gory descriptions weren't needed because the emotion in the words painted the picture. You're heart broke for him and then slowly knitted together when you saw the bond he had with Chelle slowly sealing his old wounds.

    He will never be fully healed from the past but with Chelle he has the support he needs to build a new, stronger future for him and his new family. A new family with two hilarious daughters who are going to be good trouble in the future. Loved the interrogation by them.

    All in all, a really top notch read worth more than a five star review.

    I thought Sig and Red were my favourite couple, but Shade and Chelle blew them all out of the water. This book was hard going at times, but needed to be included to get the full impact of Shade’s past. Loved this book, and how Chelle was perfect for him. By far my favourite in the series, Sig’s a close second then Judge. Totally recommend it ❤️

    If you haven't read books 1-5 and the Manning books...I don't know why not and I cannot excuse it. Go to those, one click the heck out of Jeanne St. James backlogs and then lets talk when you are done. For the rest of you who have read those and the DAMC series, you will see that these BFMC guys are raw, broken, fractured, and flawed, but oh sooo devoted to building the family that each and every one of them need (often for very different reasons). Shade has been the guy in the background. The quiet one. I loved that about Shade, how he would choose his words and frame his few sentences carefully. If he was going to give you his words, they were going to be precious. I loved how this thread wove through the story and those Shade gave words to were special to him: Chelle, Red, Cassie to name a few.

    The BFMC has an enemy: the Shirley Clan on the mountain. The problem has been...they don't always stay up there. The last two run in's had BFMC property taken up the mountain and Trip, Sig, Judge, and the guys would not rest until their property was returned. Shade earned his colors on one of those expeditions up the mountain. He also earned a whole new level of respect from his brothers. I loved the 'bromance' between Shade and Easy and so looking forward to Easy's life getting HARD!

    This book was tragic, sexy, endearing, heartbreaking, and I devoured it one evening. The book hangover I have today is worth it and then some.
