Second-In-Command: Mutant Rain Origins (Mutant Rain Origins - Prequel Novellas Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

You have got to be a fighter to rise through the ranks of New Hampton's criminal underworld.

You must be willing to do the necessary, especially when you have designs on a top spot within the most notorious gang in the city's chequered history. Guy Hagan was not aware of what was required. He will learn and carve out a legacy that others will never forget.

It was not always that way for Guy but nice guys finish last, and he is not planning on finishing last.

Second-In-Command is a dark, sci-fi urban mystery novella set before the events of The Rain: The Mutant Rain Series Book One.

Think of the series like a jigsaw, you can read in any order. The story could be read the main novel, The Rain, first and then the prequels in any order. Alternatively, you could read the prequels and then the main book. Whichever way you choose to read you will achieve the same result, but within reason, it will be a unique trail of breadcrumbs for each reader.

L.A. Frederick hails from sunny old England. Wait. That’s not right. L.A. Frederick hails from old England. Better.

An avid reader from a young age he vividly remembers being drawn into the fabulous world of fiction by the timeless works of Roald Dahl, in particular The Fantastic Mr Fox.

The escapism of fictional worlds is what led him, after a long and winding road through university and various jobs, to the craft of writing.

So when he’s not juggling the million items that day-to-day family life throws at all of us he’s either reading or honing his writing.

His debut series, The Mutant Rain and Mutant Rain Origins are dark, sci-fi mysteries with dystopian elements thrown in for good measure. “A cool cross between X-Men and Sin City.” As one reader describes the series.

Presently he is working on Songs of Star & Winter, a space opera fantasy, he describes as a cross between Game of Thrones, Star Wars and Captain Bucky O’Hare. Though he fears the reference to an early 90s cartoon series is showing his age…

I wish I would have read these books before I started the series. It would have given me the background of some of the characters. It doesn't really matter though. The series is well written and I'm used to dealing with college level books. Thank you for writing. I will start the next prequel after some sleep.

This is one of many back stories of some of the characters in the Mutant Rain series.
They all simply give the current story’s protagonist a little of their own background tale.
The prequels can be read at any time and in any order, but I personally liked reading the prequels first in order to better understand the main Mutant Rain full length novels.
The following are all of the prequels for your enjoyment:
The Last Doctor, The Lost Boy (you must sign up to Mr. Frederick’s mailing list to acquire this novella at www.lafrederick.com), The Forgetful Man, Second-In-Command and The Lone Vigilante.
Again, you can read them at any time. Before the full length books, after or even in between.
They simply provide nice details otherwise missed.
This is a very cool approach by the author.

The Second-in-Command, another short story in The Government Rain Mysteries’ universe, showcases the history behind the character of Guy Hagan, a childhood friend and neighbor of Jed Soloman and his older brother. He pitied and protected the younger, weaker boy (Jed) from the area bullies until the day things went too far and Jed was almost killed. Soon after, Jed’s father died and the brothers disappeared.

Guy remained in the old neighborhood and grew up to eventually join one of the local gangs – The Ravens. As he advances his way up the ranks of the gang, he finds out he’s being watched by the unknown leader of “The Watchroom” – the chief criminal organization in New Hampton.

This series, although titled “Mysteries,” touches a broad range of reading interests (mystery, urban mystery, mutants, horror, sci-fi, dystopian, urban horror). There is something for almost everyone.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader copy of this book.

Gruesome Urban Mob story. Reminds me of the movie, "The Pope of Greenwich Village" Unlike the movie which had spectacular cinematography, this story has the shabby community of New Hampton. However, L.A. Frederick makes the scenes come alive. His wordsmithing painted pictures in mind which will take other stories to remove. Some are even reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter.

I was provided this book as an ARC by the author; however, the review is my honest opinion.

Two young boys get bullied by some thoughts regularly. They end up going their separate ways. This story is of one of those boys years later after he has grown.
This was given to me in exchange for a honest review

Guy Hagan is Second-In-Command in the city's leading gang. In this novella, L.A. Frederick explains what drives this man. An intriguing look into the psyche of a top tier criminal. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This was another great background information book for the Government Rain series. Every one I read helps me understand the characters in Government rain a little more. I enjoyed this one and love all The Government Rain books!

I have read this book as an ARC reader. This is my freely given review.
This is a fast paced story, filled with the underground of mob life.
L.A. Fredrick has taken a short story to new heights with the assent of Guy Hagan from a collector to being second in command of the Watchroom mob in New Hampton.
The writting is excellent, and brings both the characters and the world they live in, to a stark reality
     that leaves you reeling.
The only thing I didn't like about this book, was that it was too short, it needs to become a full lenth novel!
Easiest 5 stars I've ever given!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great read from L.A.!

Having read L.A. Fredericks ‘The Rain’ earlier this year, I picked this short story up after seeing a post on his Facebook page and what a great read it was.

Really love learning more about these ‘imperfect’ superheroes / mutants and can’t wait to read more about Guy in The Government Rain Book 2!

This can be read before L.A. Fredericks ‘The Rain’ novel and contains no spoilers.

Yet again I couldn’t put this down. Intriguing, thought provoking, and more and more characters from The Rain series seem to be making an appearance.
If, like me you read novellas and can’t wait for the culmination to come to life in a novel, you really need this collection of stories.
    Miss it, miss out!
