Billy McLaughlin is a Scottish born writer with 12 books currently under his belt. Four of the books, including 2019's serial killer thriller, 'Four,' are part of the DI Phil Morris Mysteries. His first full length novel, 'Lost Girl,' arrived in May 2016 and has gone on to achieve more than 20,000 downloads. The follow up, 'In the Wake of Death,' has received rave reviews for it's dark tone and psychological elements.

His most downloaded book came in the form of 2017's, 'The Dead of Winter,' a novella that focuses as much on the broken relationships of a small community as it does the crime itself. One reader described it as being like 'a full series of Broadchurch.' Once again, praise was levelled at the atmospheric tone with another reader suggesting that the material would work well as a movie.

His Christmas short, 'Krampus,' won the US Readers Who Review award in 2017.

Billy is passionate about reading but recognises the need for bite-sized thrillers for people who enjoy reading but simply don't have the time. As he begins works on his thirteenth book, he finds himself even more excited about the writing process.

A full list of Billy's books are as follows:

This story took me so deep into the fractured minds of the characters it haunted me for days after I finished it. That's a good thing. There wasn't a single character without a complexity to them that made me both care and yet question them. Marissa however was really done so well you could feel the hairs on your arm stand at the evil in her, yet the brokenness reaches you and you hope she finds her way back from madness. The twists and turns along the way were deftly done, surprising yet possible to have figured out if I wasn't so engrossed. I look forward to more from this author.

    Gripping!
A dark thriller that keeps you wondering every step of the way, what's going to happen next? There are two of them, none really sane, so did one of them do it? You think you know what’s going on but you don’t. The twists are intense, the rhythm can drive you mad because all you want to know is what on earth is going on. Like every other book written by this author, Fractured keeps you on the edge. Once again this author didn’t disappoint and I’m pretty sure it can be made into a movie.

I thought the writing was good and the plotting hung together. The author gives the reader a good sense of what might go on in a disturbed mind. As a reader I want to identify with the protagonist, but I felt there weren't any really sympathetic characters in this story. Elly, the disturbed woman in the Asylum who has admitted to murdering her husband, is the best candidate. But she seems so confused and unstable in the opening chapters that it's hard to identify with her. And the other characters are not at all likable. Elly does improve in the last couple chapters of the book but that's late in the story. This books has a lot of potential but , in my opinion, needs a more appealing protagonist.

A good read, suspenseful and daring. With characters that are disturbingly frightening. The plot is casually macabre and I like it. This is a whodunit written at a great clip. Definitely recommend.

I've read a couple of books by this author, and enjoyed them, so was looking forward to reading his latest. I think it's the best so far!
It has a great story line - two sisters, one in an institution for having killed her husband, the other scarred for life when her sister threw boiling oil over her. As the story develops and events are revealed, it becomes clear everything is not as it seems.
The story keeps you gripped all the way through as things that happened in the past are revealed, and other characters are caught up in the wake of the sisters' situation. And that ending - wow! Wasn't expecting it, but loved it!
Well written, I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who loves thrillers and suspense novels.

Fractured is the third of Billy McLaughlin's novels I have read, and the best yet. It eschews plot devices like red herrings for a more complicated mystery; something is going on but we're not quite sure what it is. Tension never quite lets up, and I found it difficult to put Fractured down, eventually finishing Fractured in two sessions. If you like tense mysteries then Fractured is a must-read.

Billy Mclaughlin's books just keep getting better and better. I love both strong female leads and flawed, multi-layered characters and this book definitely had both! The story moves at a rapid pace and the twists and turns keep the reader guessing throughout. Looking forward to the next offering from this author!

Loved this book, I got hooked on the story from the first page, maybe because I have 5 younger sisters and know how annoying they can be or because it's written so very well. One sister is crazy, the other one believes it's her who is the crazy one. I recommend you read the book because it took me on a crazy journey of mystery mixed with scary anxious moments.. I definitely will be reading the author's other books on my kindle bookshelf. Well done Mr McL. you're a star 🌟 and my new favourite writer.

I was looking forward to this read but due to a mishap(?) with the download the print was so pale, even after changing the settings, that it was impossible to read. Might try downloading again in the hope that it's better the second time. Shame, not only for me but also for the author.

This was a very readable book, with an interesting setting, in a psychiatric clinic, and an original plot.

4.5 stars, rounded up to 5

Ellie is in a secure hospital accused of murdering her husband and badly scarring her sister. She has no memories of how it happened. This is a study in sibling rivalry and psychosis and is a fascinating read. Ellie’s doctor wants to make her the subject of a paper and is gradually lowering her dose of medicine. Her memories seep back in, but she can’t always retain them. The story is like a jigsaw puzzle and the reader can piece it together as it progresses. It’s a well thought-out story and has an exciting denouement. A really good read.
