BURIED TREASURE: is not always what it seems Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

“I found Buried Treasure a compelling read. It was so many things: a love story, a hunt for clues to lost secrets, and a fascinating look at how our past experiences shape us, and how we can heal even after damage. The characters were wonderfully well drawn. ”

Within the ancient precincts of the university the first encounter between the conference planner and the academic is accidental and unpromising. Jane thinks he sees her as shallow and ill-educated. Theo thinks she sees him as a snob, stuffy and out of touch. And neither is entirely wrong. Just as well there’s no reason for them ever to meet again!
But behind the armour they’ve each constructed from old scars, reside far more vulnerable and complex personalities, who each have an archaeological puzzle they are driven to solve. As their stories intertwine, their quest to uncover the past unearths more than expected.

Treasure is not always what it seems.

I was born in Kent. Growing up, I loved writing stories which were always lavishly embellished with drawings and doodles. The writing wasn't taken seriously by my parents but the art was encouraged. I went to art school and my first career was as an illustrator in advertising, until l I had my son, Tom.

It was then I reassessed my priorities and started to write again. My first two novels, Just Before Dawn and Desires & Dreams, were accepted and published very quickly. Sadly the publisher went bust. My books didn't get the marketing push or distribution needed to make a mark.

Though I still consider myself a Londoner, we have lived in Gloucestershire for several decades. I'm lucky enough to live at the head of a beautiful valley in the Cotswolds, near Stroud. I love the landscape and it still almost feels as if I'm on holiday. I helped to establish a community shop in our village. I was a school governor and submitted items of local news to the local newspapers.

After leaving the world of advertising I still continued with my art and attended classes for many years. I illustrated Thomas Williams' children's book THE TALE of KING HARALD and since then have supplied archaeological illustrations for his history, VIKING BRITAIN and for the academic book to which he contributed, REPRESENTING BEASTS in MEDIEVAL ENGLAND AND SCANDINAVIA.

Since I was mainstream published I have written 4 more books. But agents and publishers were unwilling to take a chance on my brand of more serious, realistic romantic fiction. With the advent of digital publishing I took matters into my own hands and self-published TORN, LIFE CLASS and FLY OR FALL. These three books were then taken up by Accent Press - now Headline Accent - and republished in 2014 and 2015.

Yet again, I have decided to independently publish my latest novel BURIED TREASURE, which came out in 2019 as an ebook, but it has recently been relaunched in both ebook and paperback format with a new cover. I am currently writing my eighth novel

    • The hero and heroine don’t instantly fall in love. Instead, they develop a friendship and get to know each other.
    • The characters’ actions make sense and are the result of their life histories.
    • The characters have flaws. They’re human in the way they look and act.
    • The author included interesting details about archaeology that added richness to the story.
    • The ending wrapped things up in a realistic and satisfying way.
    • The author’s descriptions give a sense of time and place that ground the story.

There’s more, of course, (interesting premise, good plot, likeable heroine) but those are the main reasons why I gave BURIED TREASURE five stars.

I don’t usually like romance novels but I live history. This book surprised me in the approach to romance with a healthy dose of history.

This is my first read by Gilli Allan and it most certainly won’t be my last. I love the mix of romance, politics and historical mystery happening in Buried Treasure.

Gilli Allan has created really impactful characters. Jane and Theo have their pasts, which are rather dark, making them damaged in the earlier parts of the story. I loved watching their stories unfold and their characters growing and coming to terms with their pasts. It was really well written.

I loved the mystery. Gilli Allan plants seeds throughout the story and satisfied my curiosity with the resolution. I had trouble putting this one down because there was such fantastic writing and it created a sense of intrigue. I was very impressed.

Wonderful writing, intriguing plot, and well-rounded characters, Gilli Allan has created a great gem of a novel that I recommend checking out!

Thank you to the author and Rachel's Random Resources for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is definitely a different sort of romance story, it contains quite a few different elements which all seem to run seamlessly through each other to make for one very entertaining and intriguing read.

The prologue was enough to get me hooked on the story for this one, what I did have a bit of trouble with was completely liking both of the main characters, Jane and Theo, straight away. I warmed up to Theo first and by the end of the book was completely team Jane as well. The way the author was able to go into details about archeology, as well as some of the event planning, was a great addition to the book, she had obviously done her research and I think that really showed as the story progressed. The background of both Jane and Theo was an integral part of the story and it really helped set up everything else that was going on. An awesome four and a half star read!

There's a lot of hurt buried in these characters' pasts and it's going to take a lot of grit to move on past it. Allan brilliantly weaves British history into her characters' lives as they seek out treasures, both buried and otherwise. BURIED TREASURE is a good read for the history buff, romance reader, and adventurer. For those who thrill to the nuance of human behavior...and for all who love a good hunt for a buried fortune.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual, interesting and realistic
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 24, 2020
This is an unusual book that crosses genres but is all the more satisfying because of it. The two main characters are quirky and don’t immediately strike the reader as likely romantic partners.
Jane is a rather nervous events organiser and when she has to organise a conference at a university she crosses paths with the rather offhand and frosty academic Theo. Theo is an archaeology nut intent on investigating a site that is due for development, and uncovering any finds from the site.
Meanwhile Jane can remember her family treasure from her farm back home, and the fact some of it went to a museum. There is a puzzle about it though (I can’t say more – spoilers!).
Both of these characters have buried pasts (Theo’s gold-digging ex is particularly vile) and this is why they take some time to trust each other. This is a well-written book written in short chunks from different points of view. This keeps the story moving and enables us to see both perspectives as the story unfolds. The parents of both protagonists are extremely realistically depicted and the author writes particularly authentic dialogue.
This is a little buried treasure of a book and well-worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read

A book about the solving of an archaeological puzzle was always going to hold an appeal for this reader, but what really made 'Buried Treasure' a compelling read for me was the main characters, Theo and Jane, who on the surface have nothing in common. Both of them are flawed and damaged by past relationships, but gradually come to trust one another as they strive to uncover the mysteries of the past. I found Theo and Jane's growing relationship extremely well-depicted, while the archaeological background was fascinating and added depth to the story. This book is just a bit different, defying genre as it is both a love story and a quest to uncover the truth about the past in more ways than are immediately obvious. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who Know Planning Could Be Sexy?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 18, 2019
Jane is running a fledgling business as an event planner. Theo is an archaeologist and temporary University lecturer. Their paths cross when she picks his college as the venue for a conference on town planning; and there is instant antipathy on both sides. But they have more in common than they realise. Both have built shells around themselves as the result of disastrous relationships. And both have an interest in lost treasures and uncovering the past.

Gilli Allan's latest book is a fascinating read. Her detailed research into archaeology, town planning, and event organisation is obvious, but fits seamlessly into the story without looking like an information dump. I like the way she uses details like new Bills or government debates to ground the piece in the current time. Neither main character is immediately likeable or sympathetic, but they gradually grew on me. The device of presenting alternate chapters from different points of view is not a new one, but it works well here. A most enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic and heart-warming read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 24, 2019
Buried Treasure is a slow-burning and thought-provoking romance with credible, flawed, and affecting main characters. I came to care very much about socially-awkward Theo and prickly perfectionist Jane. Their respective loneliness, sadness and difficult back stories made this seemingly mismatched couple very appealing. I liked that neither Theo nor Jane were conventionally physically attractive, that they were flawed, and that they lived in a very real sounding world in less than ideal circumstances. I also loved the unconventional way their relationship developed.
The supporting cast work well - including Jane and Theo's truly ghastly former partners. And although the main setting is a university it is not portrayed as an ivory tower but rather as a modern-day institution that must pay its way.
This all makes for a realistic, contemporary romantic novel and a heart-warming and rewarding read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely one to read again

True to its title, this is a little gem of a book. I was tempted by the story because, having done a late-learning course about archaeology and historic landscapes, I have more than a passing interest in the subject. On the face of it, Jane, a conference/events manager and Theo, an academic, should never have met. Each forms the wrong opinion about the other, each has a past which threatens to impinge on the present. And each has a desire to find out more about the eponymous treasure for reasons of their own. What I loved most about this novel was the dialogue between Theo and Jane. From initial hostility, they learn a grudging respect leading to a deepening of feelings between them. More than once I was reminded of the interplay of words between Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet so well done, Ms Allan! For me this has become a definite keeper.
