Bad Boy Benefits: A Standalone Little Sister's Best Friend Romance (Behaving Badly) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 113 ratings

I really should keep my hands off my sister’s best friend…

And hey, I've stuck to that plan, even though it's HARD. Especially since that one night Maeve and I spent together was definitely the best in my life.

But in the morning we agreed for the sake of their friendship to pretend it never happened.

It's easy to stick to this routine. We joke around, make fun of each other. And I never let on that I know what Maeve looks like without her clothes—or how often I think about it.

I’m starting to think we pulled it off when out-of-the-blue she sashays back into my store, then invites me to a party. And before I know it, I'm doing a terrible job keeping my hands off her, and she's failing miserably at resisting me too.

This is fast becoming a frenemies-with-benefits situation. But do frenemies fall for each other?

And what the hell do I do with all these strange, new feelings for her?

Especially when—oh hell no—my sister decides to set us up… with other people.

Toby owns Miracle Isle, the hottest jewelry store in L.A. He caters to the rich and famous and is in high demand. Maeve is his sister Mia's best friend and totally off limits. Well, she was, is...well, let's just say there was a time when she secretly wasn't. It was brief. Both Toby and Maeve would never consider taking it any further. Too many complications that had to do with Mia. Mia is important to both of them and it wouldn't be worth pursuing further if it might end badly. Which it probably would. Toby is a player who is also a hopeless romantic who believes in love, even if it's only for one night. Maeve? No love in her future. She doesn't need love. Her career is her top priority. Besides, if she wanted a relationship with someone, she could have one. The same goes for Toby. Its something Maeve has never even considered, especially with Toby, or so she thought.
LOVED THIS BOOK! GREAT STORY! PUT A SMILE ON MY FACE AND KEPT IT THERE! RELATABLE, FLAWED CHARACTERS WITH REDEEMING QUALITIES THAT WILL KEEP YOU INTRIGUED AND TURNING THE PAGES! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

I really enjoy the detail that JD Hawkins puts into his books giving it depth, and this was no different. I enjoyed the story between Toby and Maeve, two people resisting the pull that's between them for his sister's sake. It was a lighthearted read with some steam.

Toby and Maeve were definitely the most intriguing characters in Play Doctor. This story was a real treat. You get to know those two more intimately. As they fall in love, you fall in love with them. It was so intense. I almost burst from anticipation waiting for Maeve's response to Toby. I was almost worried she would screw it up. I just loved it!

I gave this one a 3.5. I hate rating down and wish I could give half stars.

It took me awhile to get into this one. It started out slow and didn't really pick up for me.

The two characters were destined to get together. They just seemed to fit from the very beginning.

Toby really wants Maeve and it seems that Maeve is the one who is forcing the two of them apart. She has almost as many rules to dating as he does. It's clear there is an attraction between the two but she can't seem to give in as easily as he does.

They had one night together years previously and decided never to revisit it because Maeve is his sister's best friend.

This one wasn't bad but I wish I had enjoyed it more. I'm not sure if it was the story or just my mindset at the time of reading. If you like best friend's brother romance you may enjoy this one.

    Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

It’s been a few days since I finished reading JD Hawkins’s Bad Boy Benefits. I wanted this book because the glimpses of chemistry between Toby and Maeve in the first book of this series of standalones, Playing Doctor, piqued my curiosity and interest. Would they act upon it or would they continue to deny themselves? What I found with Hawkins’s newest book is a darkness in its soul. It’s hard to explain why I was intrigued and compelled by Bad Boy Benefits. I’ll be honest. It’s initially difficult to like Toby and Maeve. In thinking about it, I believe it has to do with their displays of vanity. Maeve and Toby evoke that Los Angeles facade, the one where everything looks terribly beautiful and almost cinematic but underneath lies something more grave. For me, belying Maeve and Toby’s facades is insecurity. And it sets a graveness to Hawkins’s story which, by my estimation, is intriguing.

Here’s the thing: Hawkins makes you work for Maeve and Toby’s happy ending. These two are my favorite type of couple in romancelandia: they fight and fight and fight their attraction until it spills over into a gristly, meaty explosion of attraction. In the midst of that explosion, they become their most real, their most vulnerable, and you earn this reprieve from their fight. However, Hawkins doesn’t allow you to rest there long. Instead, he pummels his reader with their continued fight against vulnerability. There were moments in this romance when I didn’t like Maeve and Toby. They wounded each other, they catastrophized the simple act of falling in love. However, it was there when I appreciated Hawkins’s Bad Boy Benefits most. I had liked his Playing Doctor, but I never felt too emotionally connected to his hero and heroine in that story. Even more, it felt a bit one-note.

That, to me, is not the case with Bad Boy Benefits. There is fire and fight in this book that makes it feel graver and deeper than Playing Doctor. What I had anticipated isn’t what I received by reading this book; in fact, it was much, much more.

If you like a little fight towards a happy ending, then you will LOVE JD Hawkins’s Bad Boy Benefits.

A best friend to your sibling may not always be a good thing, but in this case Toby and Maeve had the best banter, their give and take was fun, sexy and so much more. I loved the story and how playful it was.
