Baking Battles (Scandinavian comfort Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 71 ratings

Are you brave enough to stay? Or strong enough to walk away? Mattias Strømme is neither, still reeling with guilt over leaving his little family, walking away from a life that has been slowly suffocating him. He’s neither strong, nor brave. His life is a recipe for disaster.

He's a single dad of a 2-year-old, has an ex-wife who scares him, and a job in finance where he scares everyone else. And now he has been dragged in as a last-minute filler contestant on Baking Battles, the hit reality baking show. Mattias can't bake. He can barely dress himself in the morning, and he definitely hasn't got the skills to charm the viewing public, or the wannabe celebs who make up the rest of the show's contestants. He's not a nice person. He's just... nothing.

Mattias left his wife when life became unbearable for him and he fell apart. Now, when he is suddenly drowning in a mess of rumours, male supermodels, and unicorn glitter? Will Mattias be brave enough to stay? Or strong enough to walk away?

If there are two things in Sophia Soames' Scandinavian Comfort series that shine, it's food and children. She must truly love both things so much to be able to express them so well in her stories. Luckily, they are two of my favorite things as well, and I adore these books. As someone else mentioned in a previous review, no villains and little angst make this a comfort read for me, going along with the series title. The baking in this book has me digging up recipes for Kransekake and Swedish pancakes, I swear I gained a couple of pounds just reading the book. I adored the main characters; grumpy Mattias and the fragile Christopher, as well as the cast of Baking Battles and especially sweet Emi. The book made me laugh and just made me happy and I'm pleased to find another 5 star book from the author. She's an autobuy for me, and I've reread at least two of her books, which is rare for me.

These guys. I love this author and this book is right there with the rest of the Scandinavian Comfort series. Mattias and Christopher are fabulous. I feel for Matt and how his first relationship left him feeling so bad about himself. I love how Chris came in and showed him that he was more than he thought. I love that they are human with arguments and stupid moments, but that they remember how they feel about each other.
I love the bonus chapters this book has. We get to check in over the years and see how they do together how life has thrown changes in their path.

This is a beautiful book that I'll be buying here soon. Wonderful characters and a fun story with laughter and feelings.

Mattias and Christopher are two people that keep you engaged in the story. Soames's Scandinavian Comforts series is a hidden gem in this genre. Baking Battles is well written, with a lovely plot and in traditional Soames's style full of love. This book is not a tear-jerker, but a deep warm and fuzzy feeling. Truly a good book to curl up with.

Sophia has done it again! Special Special book. Chris has loved Matt since his teens. Matt had to come to some realizations before he could return his love. When they finally come together it's the sweetest love ever. I also loved the visit from some old friends we met earlier in this series!

My concentration has almost disappeared in this historically difficult era. Yet, I was captivated by “Baking Battles.” Its immediacy demanded I turn pages, to discover what happened next. Sophia Soames, a new-to-me author, offered a new-to-me city (Oslo) and two of the most deliciously flawed men I’ve met.

It’s been a year since Mattias guiltily left his sexless marriage and promised himself to focus exclusively on the love of his life, his 2-year-old daughter, Emi. The novel opens as Sara, his ex, makes him “feel small and useless….dull as dishwater.” Despite his success as the finance man for TV3, Mattias thinks he’s awful to people, boring and has lost his path. We experience his loneliness when he finds, “a small pink sock under the kitchen table, a small piece of cotton that makes Mattias’s eyes water with strange tears. He misses her (Emi) when she is not here.”

Then Danijel, TV3’s producer (and brother of Mattias’ childhood best friend, Alima) begs Mattias to fill in as a contestant on Norway’s famous reality TV baking show. Mattias begrudgingly agrees, when he’s told Alima will also compete. The contest proves to be more fun than he’s had in ages, and little does he know… Danijel is setting him up.

Christopher, the show’s handsome, charming host, was Danijel’s closest teenage friend, who fell for a 3-years-younger Mattias as a kid. Unfortunately, Christopher is as unaware of himself as Mattias, and still sees himself as the awkward 15-year-old boy who Mattias never acknowledged, rather than as a world renown model. In fact, Mattias still doesn’t remember they knew each other as teens. Devastating!

But the show provides Christopher an opening and he barges in. By now, readers know both men are clueless. Shoot, Mattias doesn’t know he’s gay, believing he’s “pan-demi.” In fact, he sees himself as a doormat in the personal arena. “He’s doing it again. Giving in. Not speaking his mind. He’s not like this at work. He’s perfectly comfortable with challenging conversations between colleagues.” And so, with nothing standing between them, the two manage to mess up all their interactions.

I’d forgotten how engrossing a novel can be when it’s written in the present tense, especially when told from only one character’s point of view. We suffer alongside Mattias, with his insecurities, and are on tenterhooks as he tries to figure out what he feels; what Christopher is thinking and what he will do?

Luckily, Christopher is exactly the man I wish would have initiated me. I was melted by the raw sweetness, the heavenly ambrosia of their humor, their silliness and their lusty affection in bed. It made me feel toasty in the icy Oslo winter, with its different snow conditions described like we’re stepping in them. I myself may be a “hot house flower,” but in this chilly described climate, where warmth comes from family and community, I found a home I was sad to leave. These weren’t characters to me, but men I wanted to meet, to have over for dinner.

For an introduction to Norway’s rich balance of work and play, their fierce loyalty and adorable wittiness, “Baking Battles” will put a smile on your face. This standalone in the Scandinavian Comfort series reads like cinnamon buns and hot chocolate had been spun into words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another hit from Sophia Soames

If you’re a sucker for a HEA and the belief that love conquers all then you’ve stumbled onto the series for you. This is the third book in the Scandinavian Comfort series, and all of them have been 5* reads.

What I love about this lady's work, is that she writes about real life, real people and and stuff that can actually happen. There were so many scenes where Chris and Matt's vulnerabilities and feelings were apparent, especially those of Matt. The characters are well developed, the addition of the bonus chapters brilliantly brought readers up to date, of how their lives panned out over the years.

I can't finish this review without mentioning the author's writing skills, her use of language always has an impact on the delivery of the story. Her books are quality reads. I love how they demonstrate a level of understanding of relationships and the experiences of her characters.

I recommend all of the books in the series. They can be read as standalones, but all of the stories are worth a read. Great to meet the MCS from the first book again, and see where they're at in their lives. (less)

I loved this story, how Mattias and Chris got together and the story of their love. I was a little surprised at first with Christopher but then just loved how he fitted in with Mattias's little family. I was routing for Mattias in the baking competition and love all the other contestants. For me though, the best parts were the epilogue and bonus chapters. I love that Soames does this so we get an insight into their lives after the main event, so to speak.

Met up with some old friends who just made my day, again.

On to read anything else that Soames has written. Don't know it took me so long to pick this one up!
