The Phantom of Barker Mill: Blue Moon Investigations Book 2 - A Snarky Paranormal Detective Mystery Kindle Edition
I just took a case from the tearful, but very rich, widow whose husband supposedly died at the hands of a century-old phantom. He was the owner of Barker Steel Mill and it doesn’t take me long to realise that something very weird is going on there.
Everyone is lying to me about everything but my toughest test is dealing with the aftermath of my stupid decision to hire Amanda Harper. Not that she isn’t talented, intelligent, and capable, because she is. She is also drop-dead gorgeous and massively distracting.
She’ll prove to be an asset no doubt, assuming we live through the week that is.
The paranormal? It’s all nonsense, but proving it might just get me killed.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Brilliant, addictive and fully deserving of five stars, at least."
"The second book written by Stigg's and just as enjoyable - if not better. Aside from trying to pre-guess the un-paranormal elements, look forward to laughing about what blokes really talk about in the pub and be prepared to empathise with Tempest in his struggle to understand the female psyche."
"These books are quite different (good different). The story is engrossing and the characters are all likeable and lovingly described. It is easy to read and at the end of each chapter you want to find out what happens next. The plot has many twists and I enjoy that he is always able to find a rational explanation for the paranormal."

About the author

When Steve Higgs wrote his debut novel, Paranormal Nonsense, he was a captain in the British Army. He would like to pretend that he had one of those careers that must be blacked out and generally denied by the government, and that he has to change his name and move constantly because he is still on the watch list in several countries. In truth, though, he started out as a mechanic - not like Jason Statham in the film by that name, sneaking around as a hitman, but more like one of those sleazy guys who charges a fortune and keeps your car for a week even though the only thing you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.
At school, he was largely disinterested in all subjects except creative writing, for which he won his first prize at the age of ten. However, calling it the first prize he won suggests that there were other prizes, which is not the case. Awards may yet come, but in the meantime, he enjoys writing mystery and thriller novels and claims to have more than a hundred books forming a restless queue in his mind because they are desperate to be written.
Now retired from the military, he lives in southeast England with a duo of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he'll ever leave, the beer is just too good.

The plot was a little off putting but the characters and the ambiance of the story more than made up for it.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2022After thoroughly enjoying the first book of this series, I turned to this one to see if it was as good. To my surprise and delight I found it to be every bit as good if not better! I find myself commiserating with the "hero" of these books, as he is quite human, with all the quips and foibles that come along with being a mere human, lol! I find myself laughing out loud at some of the things he is himself into, with entirely the best of intentions . . . but then, we all know what the road to he'll is paved with! I would recommend this series to anyone who loves a good mystery/adventure and likes a bit of a laugh along with it!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2023I am really enjoying the characters in this series. I enjoy the banter between the friends and how each different personality reacts in the situations the author it’s them in.

Tempest is a paranormal investigator unlike most. His stories are interesting and exciting with a twist. Read them, I think you’ll like them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, addictive and fully deserving of five stars, at least.
Brilliant, addictive and fully deserving of five stars, at least.
.
Steve Higgs is a consummate story teller, whose books are a pleasure on so many levels and are all of a consistently high quality read. Without risk of a spoiler, I can say simply that they are whodunits with a difference, set in the south-east of England in modern 21st century times; and each features a different theme and adversary. In pursuance of which, and improvising by the ‘seat of his pants’ as it were, the main hero (who is ex-armed forces) seems to have the unfortunately recurring occupational hazard of getting himself arrested by the police, questioned, warned, and then released, at some point during most of his investigations.
.
I recommend these tales all equally, as it is hard to single-out an absolute favourite, because I thoroughly enjoyed them all.
.
Their reliable intrigue, thrill, and suspense had me gripped and unable to put them down. Late nights and lack of sleep resulted. The recurring characters are endearingly believable, flawed and human, and very familiar (sometimes endearingly so) because I am sure we all have or had once known friends and acquaintances just like them, ‘warts and all’, including strengths, weaknesses, annoyances, and attitudes; sometimes demonstrated in outrageous banter. All have been familiar to me as very much like real people whom I have known, lost touch with over a lifetime, and now vividly recall. Thus it feels like a long lost and welcome reunion.
.
The dialogue and interaction is interspersed and balanced with moments of irresistible humour, which perfectly compliments the adrenaline-filled moments. Although each novel draws from the same regular team of characters (investigators, their researchers and advisors, and back-up muscle), and are sequentially written, nevertheless each novel is stand-alone and can be just as enjoyable if read out of order.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this great story, Steve Higgs entices you in with a variety of interesting characters and extraordinary and fascinating occurrences to be solved by the fabulous Tempest. Looking forward to reading the next book, I’ve grown quite attached to Tempest and his escapades, Mr Wiggly makes me laugh too! Plus I’m in love with Bull & Dozer 🥰

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun and engaging read
I'm enjoying this series, which follows a private investigator hired to solve apparently paranormal events. While we know the protagonist will find a normal cause (as the paranormal is nonsense after all!), it is a fun journey filled with hilarious characters.
