But then the TABLE is attacked, and suddenly, all bets are off.
Who is gunning for them – and why?
And what game are the people at the TABLE truly playing?

Such a great book! If you are a fan of either the Mission Impossible or James Bond movies or mystery media in general - movies, books, magazines, TV shows, then this is the book for you!

Jack and Ada follows the story of two kids in their late teens, Jack and Adelaide (Ada) who are part of a mysterious organization called the TABLE. The main part of the book follows a new recruit to the TABLE, Logan, who comes in and is assigned to work with Jack and Ada. He learns that Ada is a behind-the-scenes operator and works with Jack and others who carry out orders while she directs them remotely. The TABLE is supposed to be a secretive organization, but after it is attacked by an unknown enemy shortly after Logan joins, that is when the real action gets going!

To reveal more would do a huge disservice to the book, the author, and the reader. But I will close by saying - I hope this book can turn into a movie or series! Very highly recommend it!

Base Means offers an intriguing story with engaging characters, lively dialogue, and a captivating plot. The story of Jack and Ada is an emotional roller coaster, with moments of intense sadness and others of pure exhilaration. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next one.

"Base Means: The Story of Jack and Ada" is a great start to a promising new spy adventure series from the talented author Bree Nan. Sort of a New Adult James Bond, "Base Means" concerns the adventures of three operatives, Logan, Jack, and Ada, who work for the mysterious and clandestine agency TABLE -- a secret organization devoted to combating the forces of evil in the world, kind of like the Robin Hood of spy agencies.

The novel switches back and forth between the 3 different POVs of Logan, Jack, and Ada, and it's fun to watch these three well-drawn and dynamic characters (all with different backgrounds, skills, talents, and abilities) work together after TABLE's main headquarters base is almost destroyed by the bad guys.

Nan has created 3 appealing main characters, and I really enjoyed their constant bickering. In particular, the relationship between Logan, who is in his mid-20s, and 19 year old Jack, who has a bad case of ADHD, is humorous and fun. Also, in the latter half of the novel, when Ada joins Logan and Jack, the story really kicks into high gear. This is an exciting triangle and the growing romance between Jack and Ada offers a nice counterbalance to the usual spy adventures.

However, the novel has a few weaknesses. "Base Means" is a Spy Action Thriller, but there's not much tension or danger for the main characters. Also, the story's structure is episodic and lacks an overarching narrative goal. Jack, Logan, and eventually Ada, go on missions throughout the novel, but there is really not enough tension, risk, or high stakes to their missions, and things go far too easily for our main characters.

In my opinion, "Base Means" would really have benefited from having a chief bad guy for the trio of Jack, Ada, and Logan to go up against. Right now, there is a mention of a rival evil organization, The Sons of God, that is out to destroy TABLE, but we never see them. It would be like "Star Wars" just mentioning the Evil Empire and Darth Vader but never showing them.

In addition, the action and the stakes don't escalate for the characters until we are almost at the end of the novel which then leads to the sequel where we assume most of the action and excitement will take place. This makes the reader feel that the first novel is essentially one big prologue, setting the stage for the main action and conflict that will be featured in the second novel. This in my opinion is a mistake and may cause the reader to feel a bit let down.

So, why did I give "Base Means: The Story of Jack and Ada" a 4 Star Review? Well, I loved the characters. Logan, Jack, and Ada are well-rounded individuals with wonderful strengths, quirks, and flaws. If you can create exciting and fully realized characters that readers fall in love with and root for then you are more than halfway home to enjoying a career as a successful author. Bree Nan has certainly created some wonderful characters in "Base Means", and I can see Logan, Jack, and Ada starring in many adventures in the coming years ahead.

Folks, Bree Nan is an author to watch, and I for one am looking forward to watching her learn and grow as a writer as she brings us more of the exciting adventures of Logan, Jack, and Ada.

    Sincerely,

I am a fan of Nan's work, so this was no exception. Base Means was what I needed in terms of suspense and mystery. It's what I've come to expect-engaging story, good dialogue, excellent character development. I read the thing in a quick pass. It's not a super long read but the story feels real.

I am a romance reader so the romances within were the big draw for me that kept me immersed. I expected some of it based on the synopsis but it was even better than I expected and I really enjoyed it. No, this is not a romance novel but if you are interested in romance and suspense, this will be even better for you. Great read!

The story revolves around Logan Svenson, a boy trained in the arts of espionage and thievery, and a crippled girl named Ada, who knows nothing of mercy. Together, they find themselves entangled in the enigmatic organization known as TABLE, where sustainable methods are employed to combat slave trafficking and return stolen goods to their rightful owners.

As Logan delves deeper into the workings of TABLE, his suspicions grow, questioning the true motives and intentions of this seemingly benevolent organization. His encounters with Jack and Ada, the prodigies who were raised within TABLE, further pique his curiosity.

However, everything changes when TABLE comes under attack, unraveling a web of intrigue and danger. The stakes are raised, and Logan must uncover who is targeting TABLE and why. The story takes thrilling twists and turns, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

"Base Means" is a unique blend of genres, encompassing elements of spy novels, psychological and medical mysteries, and even touches of romance. The author weaves these different threads together seamlessly, creating a captivating narrative that will leave readers wanting more.

The characters are well-developed and bring depth to the story. Logan's skepticism, Ada's resilience, and Jack's enigmatic nature add layers of intrigue to the plot. The author's writing style is engaging and keeps the pace steady, ensuring that the story remains gripping throughout.
