Burke and the Bedouin (James Burke) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 60 ratings

James Burke - a spy in the age of Napoleon

Burke's mission to watch out for French plots in Egypt is overtaken by events when Napoleon invades the country. On one side: a French army, 35,000 strong. On the other: James Burke and Bernadita, the Spanish woman he has saved from captivity in Cairo. From the Battle of the Pyramids to Nelson's victory on the Nile, James Burke's adventures in Egypt find him at the eye of a desert storm. Can he frustrate French plans and get Bernadita safely out of country? And are the pigeons he had to carry to Alexandria going to be any help at all? James Burke's second adventure is set against the background of one of Napoleon's less well-known campaigns. It's real history - but not the stuff you learned at school.

Tom Williams used to write books for business. Now he writes novels set in the 19th century that are generally described as fiction but which are often more honest than the business books. (He writes contemporary fantasy as well, but that’s a dark part of his life, so you’ll have to explore that on your own – ideally with a friend and a protective amulet.)

His stories about James Burke (based on a real person) are exciting tales of high adventure and low cunning set around the Napoleonic Wars. The stories have given him the excuse to travel to Argentina, Egypt, and Spain and call it research.

Tom lives in London. His main interest is avoiding doing any honest work and this leaves him with time to ski, skate and dance tango, all of which (before covid) he thought he did quite well. In between he reads old books and spends far too much time looking at ancient weaponry.

Tom’s blogs appear regularly on his website, https://tomwilliamsauthor.co.uk where you can also find details of all his books. You can follow him on Twitter as @TomCW99 or Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/AuthorTomWilliams).

Great interaction between James Burke and Sergeant William Brown. Good story! Author provides plenty of observations about other cultures, well researched. Really enjoy how Burke slips into any situation and makes use of other people and their talents. Burke can be brutal and soft, and listening to William complain is good story telling. Such a great series!

This is the second book I have read in the James Burke Series and once again I really enjoyed it, its the sort of book you can't put down. It weaved the story perfectly around Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798.

This is a lot better than the first book, more interesting and better paced. If the first book was basically true, Burke seems a more rounded and believable character here. Looking forward to book three. The proof reader must have fallen asleep a few times though!

Having previously enjoyed other books by Tom Williams, I decided to try Burke and the Bedouin. I was not disappointed, it is a thoroughly riveting read. The book itself is well presented, and is enhanced by a very pleasing front cover.
    A solid 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting tale in Napoleonic Egypt

This tale is intriguing and entertaining if a somewhat simplistic read.
It is fun and i will be reading the rest of the books but is a little superficial in style.
