4.6 out of 5 stars 41 ratings

Fleeing the war-torn German Empire, Brunhilde “Hilde” Schuster immigrates to the United States where her cousin’s family teaches her rudimentary English. She finds work as a caretaker for the elderly member of a family whose German ancestors immigrated decades earlier.

Carl Becker, whose parents, before his birth, fled Germany after the failed 1848 revolution, feels an attraction to the new companion for the Bergmann Oma. However, he is reluctant to strike up a friendship. Resentful of his mother’s constant pressure to marry a good German girl, he decided years earlier he was born in America, he’s an American, and he will marry an American woman.

Hilde learns of an American holiday called Thanksgiving. What do Pilgrims from England and eating turkey, corn, and pumpkin pie have to do with her? Invited to join her employers’ extended family and friends, in the spirit of celebration, she decides to bake and bring a favorite German dessert —
Bienenstich – Bee Sting Cake.

    St Louis, Missouri 1871

Just imagine, leaving you home, your country, and going to a new place and having no idea how everything will work out? Our immigrant ancestors had a lot of reasons to leave their homes to come to America... This is the story of one such family! Zina brings her stories alive with her research and this one has special meaning!(read the dedication!)

Brunhilde travels to America, with her deceased betrothed's parents and finds herself agreeing to take care of a grandmother (Oma) to earn her keep. Oma seems to be an ornery, unhappy woman, but soon with Hilde's are, things begin to change.

Carl does his best not to care for Hilde, because he thinks he wants to marry an American woman, not German. But God has his way and takes them on a wonderful journey of discovery and surrounds them with exactly what is needed!!

So much history blended in and told perfectly, there was no way not to fall in love with this family! Plus you learn a lot of some German desserts including Bee Sting Cake!!

A good story about a young woman traveling with a family from staying with their in-laws and the travels to be a caretaker and learns English and then finds love

I enjoyed how the cake got its name! I think the bee sting cake story was the ice breaker at the Thanksgiving holiday that showed how all cultures are welcome and invited to the table in America!
Hilde had struggles in her life and it seemed as she was destined to always bite her lip and keep quiet as to stop rocking the boat in the family that never accepted her after her fiancé died. Taking care of someone else’s Oma seems as if a lifeline had been thrown her way and since she was used to dealing with cranky people, how hard could it get!

As with all the authors books I have read, this book doesn’t disappoint. Once you start reading it, it’s hard to put down. I mistakenly thought it was an old time cookbook, boy was I wrong. However, she does give the recipe for the cake and explain how it got it’s name. The main character is Brunhilde or Hildegard who at 21 is considered an old maid because she isn’t married. Hilde lives in Germany with her dead fiancé’s family and emigrates to America in the 1870’s. The author always writes clean romances with a strong Christian background. What I enjoy most is her detail to facts (as in this story with German words and the history of our great country.). She always incorporates these facts in a fun, meaningful way to have the reader learn while enjoying the story as it unfolds. Very enjoyable read that I highly recommend.

    This is a great read!
I enjoyed the use of some German words throughout the story to make it feel more realistic.
Immigrating to a new country involves so much change and hard work. I appreciated the different views on immigration in this story. Some Germans were happy to stay in their German communities. Some, like the main characters wanted citizenship and integration into a different culture.
I really like Oma, even if she was critical. She needed to be useful and loved and Hilde helped her blossom once again.
I did not like Ernst at all and felt for his poor wife and Hilde.
The bee sting cake recipe looks good. I might have to try it some day!
I received an ARC. My opinions are my own.

Hilde, at age 21, emigrates to the USA from Germany with her deceased fiance's family. The patriarach of the family, Ernst Becker, treats her unkindly. He seems genuinely bitter that his wife's "maid" has yet to marry. Hilde is given the opportunity to take care of Oma and gladly leaves the harsh life Ernst has created for her. The history surrounding emigration in the 1870's is wonderfully woven throughout the story. The use of German words and phrases makes you feel like you are part of the story. The characters well developed. I love the inclusion of the recipe for Bee Sting Cake. Finally, who is Carl? Read the book to find out. It won't disappoint!

This is an OK American historical romance, but Carl was hard to like at first. It gets 3 stars from me.

I thought it was just too short to have enough character development. I wanted more backstory on both Hilde and Carl.

I liked Hilde, and thought it was sad how badly she was treated by her dead fiance's stepfather. He was cruel to her, simply because she hadn't been able to marry his stepson. I liked that she was so good with the older woman she cared for, and that she figured out how to make her happier.

Carl was hard to like at first. He had this ridiculous idea that he only wanted to marry a woman born in America, because he was sure that a German girl would never be able to fit in to his American/German lifestyle. He shared that with Hilde soon after meeting her, but didn't even realize that it hurt her feelings -- that was just dumb. He did get better, and realized he was wrong, but not until almost the end of the book.

The premise of the series, with each story having a special recipe that the h makes, is a lot of fun. I plan to try some of them, since they sound delicious.

This is a clean romance, with nothing but kisses. If you only want to read romances that do not include sex scenes, this one might work for you.

    My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
