Bench Coach: Forty-Five Years in Canada’s Communications Business Paperback – December 25, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
Bench Coach, a memoir by Georgetown author, Gord Corlett, tells the story of his forty-five years in Canada’s communications business.
Corlett, a graduate of Ryerson’s Radio and Television (RTA) course, started his career in community programming at Maclean Hunter Cable TV in Owen Sound and finished it at Rogers Cable in Hamilton/Toronto. In between, he was an integral member of the teams that launched extended cable-tiers, NCN (CMT-Canada), Bell ExpressVu, The Comedy Network, Outdoor Life, Look TV, and Corlett Communications Inc.
In Bench Coach, he describes his trials and tribulations growing up and then dishes up the inside story of the early days of Canada’s cable-communications business, including personal dramas, big personalities, high-stakes negotiations, and back-room shenanigans.
As its title suggests, Bench Coach is also a story of mentoring and being mentored, and the value of teamwork in his career and in life. Bench Coach introduces the many individuals who he worked with and who helped shape his life—supporting him through personal struggles, career moves and a battle with cancer.

About the author

Gord was born at a very young age (old joke!) and grew up in Toronto, Ontario. At twenty, he stumbled upon Ryerson’s Radio and TV Arts course and wanted to become a sports announcer until he realized you needed a half-decent voice to do that.
After graduating, he sought his fame and fortune in Owen Sound, Ontario, where he and his hippy friends ran the local community channel. After eleven years of doing this in both Owen Sound and London, he entered the wonderful world of marketing and contract negotiations at Maclean Hunter in Toronto.
After Rogers purchased Maclean Hunter in 1994, Gord helped launch several new communications companies, including NCN (CMT Canada), Bell ExpressVu, the Comedy Network, Outdoor Life, Look TV, and Corlett Communications.
During this period, he became a successful Spin and Aquafit instructor and fundraiser for the YMCA. He raised thousands of dollars for the YMCA, JDRF (diabetes), Heart House Hospice, and Habitat for Humanity.
After surviving colon cancer and heart issues, Gord created a number of bucket list activities to celebrate his sixtieth birthday. These included skydiving from 13,000 feet, a family trip back to John Island, a helicopter ride in northern British Columbia, the Grey Cup game in Calgary, and a romantic weekend in Bayfield, Ontario, with his wife Barb.
After retiring, Gord decided to write his memoir, Bench Coach. It details his life growing up, his Ryerson years, and the “ups and downs” during his forty-five year career in communications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, inspiring and positive read!
A joy to read and many inspiring stories of positivity and perseverance. Gord tells us about never giving up, seizing opportunity and most importantly, having fun! I only worked with Gord for a short time but he was always a shining light coming in to the office! Since I can’t remember all of the amazing tales he used to tell I’m glad he’s put some in book form. There are some wonderful nuggets of wisdom in it a well! Thank you Gord!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun read
Gord's memoir arrived on time and it is as promised - a great revisit of a good 45 years Gord wasted toiling in the Communications business. I say wasted only because I think he missed his calling as a writer. His "Bench Coach" is a fast-paced and witty collection of stories. It brought back so many memories and his thumbnail sketches of all the cast of characters is so accurate and humourous! Enjoyed reading Bench Coach...a must read for anyone who ever knew you Gord!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great memoir about the Cable Industry
I just finished Gord's book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Gord's insight and anecdotes about the Cable and Broadcast TV industries are great. Reading this book was a great trip down "memory lane", and I am sure anyone that worked with Gord or was involved in the industry during this period will enjoy this book.
