Dead Lez Walking Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 272 ratings

One hospital. One zombie virus. One desperate group. One way out.

A new virus has appeared, and all Taren can do is groan. Being a nurse in Accident and Emergency has its downsides, and dealing with the flood of people freaking out over symptoms they don’t really have is definitely one of them.

Joy, an exhausted surgeon, is just trying to find somewhere to relax after a horrendous night on call—and somewhere she can avoid Taren, since Joy blew her off after an incredible date weeks ago. When she wakes up after an accidental nap, her pager has gone dead, and the doors outside are barricaded. This can’t be about the virus, can it?

Yes, it can. The dead are rising, and they are hungry. Joy and Taren are trapped with a group of others as they try to fight for their lives and get out. The rest of the group think it would be great if Joy and Taren would stop making moon eyes at each other when they are oh, you know,
just trying to survive the zombie apocalypse.

Benson spent her childhood wrapped up in any book she could get her hands on and—as her mother likes to tell people at parties—even found a way to read in the shower. Thankfully moving on from writing bad poetry in her teens, she started to write stories about anything and everything. Tearing her from her laptop is a fairly difficult feat, though if you come bearing coffee you have a good chance.

Originally from Australia, she currently lives in Spain, speaking terrible Spanish and going on as many trips to new places as she can, budget permitting. This means she mostly walks around the city she lives in.

Great zombie book!!
5 out of 5 stars
Great zombie book!!
Absolutely great read! Do you like zombies? This is for you. Do you like living in a pandemic and reading about an outbreak? This is for you. If you like more queer characters than you can shake a stick at? This is for you. I stumbled upon this author as we were both speaking at a conference and her story struck a chord with me, so I grabbed it and devoured this book. The story could be seen as formulaic, but that doesn’t make it any less interesting or original. I will say, having this many characters accepting of others is the most unbelievable thing in this book. The author did an amazing job making everything mesh together.

Dead Lez Walking had everything I was expecting - blood, gore, dismembered body parts, undead things coming at you from every corner....
    but...
...it also had so much more, which was a totally unexpected suprise. I loved the chemistry between the characters - their camaraderie, their optimism, their never-give-up attitude, their 'no (living) person gets left behind' motto. I loved the pace and flow of the book, the constant tension that makes you want to keep turning the pages. I loved that almost every character got a say, even if it was just a single chapter. I loved the creativity of the scenes. The humour is what caught me most by surprise, because I never expected to be laughing out loud while reading a book on zombies. And finally, the romance - what a great way to weave it into the story!
So, if you are like me, sitting on the fence and wondering if you should pick up a book on zombies - I'd say go ahead! I don't think you will regret it!

It was nice to read a zombie book that begins at the start of the outbreak instead of right in the middle. It was fast paced and had a ton of different POVs. The ending was a little more ambiguous than I wanted. I kind of wonder if there will be a second one. But all in all a good read!

I rarely write a review. I always think that I'll get to it later but usually later never comes. This time I want to make sure that I leave a review. This is a book that has hilarious moments and even some romance to break the tension of zombies running wild in a hospital with a group of diverse hospital staff (nurses, surgeons, residents and a patient) trying to fight them off and escape from a locked down hospital. This book ends with a possibility of a sequel or just an ending that makes you wonder what the future will bring. Solid writing, fast-paced action, and good character building. A great read, even if I didn't care for the title. Buy it and don't read it at night alone. ;-)

I have discovered that I don’t like zombie books. I have never watched a movie or television show with them and now will never do it. The writing of the book was good and I did get caught up in the excitement of the fighting. However, I do not like a lot of gore which was described very vividly. There were a lot of characters and they were not well developed because each chapter jumped from character to character. The main thing I disliked was that the last sentence was ambiguous. Was she going to become a zombie or were they safe. There should have been a continuation of the story in another book. However, the book was published in 2021 so I am guessing that there will not be a sequel. Very disappointing.

I read this for the I Heart Sapphic 2025 Reading Challenge for the prompt Grumpy/Sunshine.

CW: blood, gore, death (it is a zombie book after all)

There is something wrong with me that I will seek out and read zombie books knowing full well that they give me nightmares every time.

    Quick Thoughts:
    - Having the setting of a zombie break out in a hospital hits particularly hard (I also made the mistake in reading a chapter when I was in a waiting room at my local hospital. Big. Mistake.)
    - It took me an embarrassing amount of time to figure out that the setting is in Australia
    - Love that you get chapters from each of the people in group. Made me even more anxious for them to survive
    - Joy waking up from a nap to all the blood and death and the zombie outbreak in full swing is a situation lifted straight out of my nightmares
    - I adored how diverse this book is (sexuality, gender expression, and race)
    - Still laughing over the comments about splitting up
    - Yes, there is a prominent sapphic romance in this book but that’s more like a subplot, the book is about trying to survive the zombie outbreak
    - I always say that the zombie apocalypse in a book/movie happens in a universe where there are no zombie stories but this book it is a thing in pop culture so the survivors get to that realization pretty quickly
    - The added layer on how quickly the county’s infrastructure went down and lack of communication about what was happening made me feel even more claustrophobic as I read on
    - This book has a very zombie horror bleakness that every zombie apocalypse book has and it still hit me hard and was a great ending

Overall I shouldn’t have finished this book at night but it was just too fun to put off finishing the book to the next day. Definitely pick this up if you enjoy zombie apocalypse books, it really is great. I’m the biggest wuss you’ll ever meet and I loved it.

there are no dead lez walking and no prison theme either!lol This book was da'bomb. I love my zombie and sci-fi movies and I could totally see this plot becoming a good movie if well funded and must have sequels.

The whole journey I felt like I was with the characters and I could feel their fear, predicaments, moral dilemma (to some extent), triumphs and their ability to push unwillingly forward...well not much of a choice in a zombie apocalypse.

I didn't even skip a couple of pages ahead and that is huge for me since I become impatient, not this though I read every bit! To be honest, I was so engrossed with the other parts of the story and side romances that I got the most annoyed at the romance between the leads or maybe just Ayton (her reason to push Taren away was just lame vs the hurt she inflected upon Taren, that woman is a saint in my book to be so understanding), but it was nice and justttt enough. Bring on the sequel I say

I love Dead Lez walking. When you start this book you can't stop reading. You get trapped by the story and you don't want it to end. The scenes are so well described that you feel you are running with them trying to escape. Exciting and fun at the same time.

I wasn't really sure what the author would do with a zombie story, but as with her other books, she's slayed it (couldn't resist), surprised me, and left me wanting more. And I don't even like zombie stories, usually! Very nicely done, with a wonderfully diverse cast of characters, a great balance of action and development, and the author's usual wit that always shines through.

Okay, normally I couldn't care less about zombies. I don't hate it, but I rather not read/watch anything related. But since I really like G Benson writing and well, queer people all around, I thought "why not?". AND I wasn't disappointed.

I really liked it. At times I felt exasperate with the folks being stupid or taking their time to do things (as if they had all the time in the world - THEY DID NOT), OMG why are you guys taking so long to do that thing to Xin?

And although I really enjoy multiple POV, with the length of the book I didn't get the chance to get as attached to all the characters as I usually can. Don't get me wrong, I clicked with pretty much everyone but the connection could've been deeper, given time (more pages) or fewer POV, I guess. However, even with these details, IMO, the characters' chemistry, their friendship and bond were through the roof.

Overall I really liked it and the only thing really bothering me here is the end. I mean surely this cannot be it? Can it? Like we're going to get a sequel right? Again, I'm not a zombie fan, but I'm hooked here, need more haha. It cannot be the end of it. I refuse to accept it. Nope.
