4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 4,547 ratings

From USA Today Bestselling authors Emily McIntire and Sav R Miller comes a gripping and spicy romantic suspense.

Skelm Island, Maine has always been known for two things: lobsters and its broken lighthouse.

But when corpses start showing up in the water, the isolated town becomes the face of a cryptic investigation.

At the heart of which stands Lincoln Porter, a grumpy ex-SEAL whose lobstering business seems to attract more dead bodies than fish.

When homicide expert Detective Sloane is called in to assist with the case, she begins digging up skeletons; ones that Lincoln would rather stay buried.

Forced to work together, Sloane’s suspicious attitude and optimistic demeanor grate on the lobsterman’s nerves, resulting in a rivalry that’s as addicting as it is volatile.

But as everything unravels and they have no one else to trust, Lincoln and Sloane must depend on each other to figure out what secrets should be brought to light…

...and which secrets should stay hidden.

Sloane has always wanted to be a homicide detective, she has the career but can she solve the murders on Skelm Island before more bodies keep popping up? Lincoln has a hard time letting go of his past, holding on to his blue eyed best friend that mysteriously disappeared. Will the presence of a new detective on the island open up old wounds or help him heal them?

To me this was a good read, I was intrigued but by the end it hadn’t stood out to me as being overwhelmingly great. I try to save my 5 ⭐️ for books that make me feel passionately one way or another about the characters.

Also the plot twists were fairly obvious, the authors drop plenty of hints about certain characters to know that their a bit off and obviously have something to do with the murders. The biggest plot twist is probably why they started the murders rather than who was involved. There’s another side plot that is going on surrounding the missing best friend that also was pretty obvious but I will say they don’t keep that one a secret for very long and I think Lincoln figured it out maybe like halfway through the book, so I’m not really sure that was meant to be a big deal anyways.

I liked it more for the suspense of the characters finding out and how they’d react. I didn’t know who did it immediately but there’s only I think three people where the main characters mention something being off about them enough to realize it has to be one of the three. My bet is always on the person you would least suspect which just left the why. That part was really interesting and pretty sad, it does wrap everything up nicely though so there’s no questions by the end.

The only part that wasn’t really wrapped up for me was something that happens at the very beginning of the book. It seems like it’s going to be important and come back later on but it only gets mentioned once in the characters mind and never again. It’s odd that it was mentioned at the start then never looked into or of value further along.

Overall I enjoyed this book. It’s a thriller romance but it’s more heavy on the romance. The plot twists were good. While reading I had an inkling of suspicion with one of the characters that turned out to be right, but the others I didn’t guess. The plot was good, the spice was spicin’, I liked the dual POV.

Sloane was called in to work this case because she’s an expert in homicide. However I don’t feel like she contributed that much to the case it self, it would have been nice to see her actually be the expert. They have all these resources from the Portland PD but they don’t use any of them even though her and her partner know how incompetent the local PD is. That’s really my only “complaint” with the book. Would recommend!

As much as I love Emily McIntire’s books, I was not completely and alarmingly hooked as I usually am while reading Be Still My Heart, xo-authored by Sav R. Miller. Although enjoyable, I think my suspension of disbelieve was severely lacking throughout the book.

Told in a dual perspective, Be Still My Heart takes place in a quiet small town called Skelm Island off the coast of Maine. It follows Detective Sloane as she is called in to investigate several murders that have serial killer tendencies. Skelm Island native and retired Navy Seal, Lincoln Porter, takes up his father’s lobster business, stuck living a mundane life doing the same routine day in and day out, haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his best friend. He leads a relatively normal mundane life until a dead body washes up to the surface stuck in one of his lobster traps.

I thoroughly enjoyed the premise and storyline however, Be Still My Heart was a little “too-busy” for me. There was so much to unpack and so many moving parts that I felt certain scenes didn’t get enough exposure or time to really make me believe the plausibility of these characters. Lots of scenes were sort of glossed over and left me with a sense that there was unfinished business and it happed too many times for me to overlook. Detective Sloane became passive in certain interrogation scenes and that to me felt painfully obvious that perhaps the writers didn’t want to delve too deeply into a particular scene. It was a bit distracting for me when sex scenes were interlaced with the characters trying to catch a serial killer.

Don’t get me wrong, the sex scenes were spicy and extremely well-done but they dulled the importance of the investigation and the big reveal at the end.

This was definitely a 3-star for me and I definitely recommend it for the romance but not necessarily for the mystery and true crime genre lovers out there.

Definitely not as spicy as some of Millers other works but just as good! I really like the banter between the MCs and the style of writing. I was engrossed in the story, it was well paced. I do recommend if not just for the thriller aspect, the smut wasn't overwhelming. I'll be honest I kinda skimmed those parts I wanted the plot to continue lol

I also did expect the "bad guy" I just got immediate red flags so I wasn't super shocked, however some of the loose ends being figured out definitely had me covering my mouth. I really wasn't expecting so many reunifications. I felt bad for Morgan's family on both ends. How terrible a loss.

Oh my god! I loved this book! So I listened to the audio while also reading the book and I honestly absolutely loved it! There were so many plot twists - some of which I predicted, some of which I really didn’t expect!! Can I just say how amazingly sweet Lincoln is - he really did melt my heart and i really enjoyed reading the chapters from his POV. Morgan’s storyline was incredible and I felt it was written really well. There was so much mystery in this book and I honestly couldn’t fault it.
