Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is the ultimate chick-lit read--a light-hearted romp focused on the travails of Jan, a college student dumped by her boyfriend, an SDSU student. The moment proves an epiphany, as Jan resolves to stop dating and find fulfillment as a single woman." - East County Magazine

"Between Boyfriends is a delicious slice of chick-lit! Snappy dialogue sets this story apart from the pack as it follows a young woman who, financially cut off by her parents when she fails to attend school, learns that life is more than her Amex card, and reunites with a mother who has endured her own brand of pain." - Jan Moran, bestselling author

"BETWEEN BOYFRIENDS is a great read. It's got everything you'd expect in a chick-lit book: good friends, fun, and a little romance, but the thing Sarka-Jonae adds to this story is a journey." - Caroline Fardig, USA TODAY bestselling author

"Jan, the much lovable yet so far from perfect anti-heroine of this refreshing novel, seems to be plumbing new depths at each turn of the page, as her fairy-tale like, easy going world gradually crumbles around her... Jan is a Cinderella that chucks away the dainty slipper and gets on with real life. Revivifying and fun... this novel is a comforting reminder that it isn't all that easy to be a young woman discovering that most of the time the only prince charming who can save us is our own little selves." -

Sárka-Jonae is a novelist, publicist, journalist, and former East County Magazine columnist(EastCountyMagazine.org). Her novel writing career began with Between Boyfriends, a romantic comedy novel for women who've been "between boyfriends," which is much cooler than being single.

Sárka-Jonae is a graduate of Syracuse University. Before writing novels, she was a personal trainer and massage therapist, helping people tone up, slim down, and chill out. She currently works as an emergency services dispatcher. In her free time, SJ loves to dance in flash mobs, in music videos, on speakers, or at home in her underwear. She practices kung fu and yoga, was briefly a Buddhist nun, and travels extensively for "research." She's a huge animal lover and has been vegan since 1999. She's committed to respectfully unveiling the truth about how factory farms abuse animals. SJ lives in San Diego with a cat and a dog.

This is not my usual type of read, but I really couldn't put it down. The writing is fast-paced and to the point. No overly-flowy prose here, which keeps you reading right to the end. The book is mostly light and funny, while still dealing with heavier issues; It had me laughing out loud more than once.

I enjoyed going through the main character's metamorphosis in her quest to get her life together and become a better person and a better friend. The other characters were well-written and had their own voices (a pet peeve of mine is reading a book and finding all of the characters sound, behave, and react in the same ways...) Good scene continuity (not just for movies, people.)

Overall, I would recommend this book, and I can't wait to read the next. My only complaint is that it IS a series, and therefore I have to wait for the next book for the continuance/resolution of some of the larger plot points, although it does a good job resolving the immediate ones.

If you like the movie "Clueless", you will love this book. Definitely a guilty pleasure.

My favorite part about this book is that the main character, Jan, is far from perfect. She is kind of spoiled and selfish, but the author and other characters seem well aware of that. In a well written novel, conflict will occur because of a protagonist's flaws, making them more than decoration flaws like clumsiness. Between Boyfriends definitely has relationship and occupational problems that occur because of the protagonist's ways of handling issues. Fortunately, like most of us did in college, Jan grows up over the course of the novel.

For me, the novel moved a bit slowly at the beginning.

Since I am a New Adult (between the ages of 18 and 26), I've been venturing into the New Adult genre lately. What I've found is that novels coming out in the New Adult genre seem to be more for an audience in their late twenties to forties. I would recommend this novel for anyone who is feeling nostalgic about college.

this is a well written story about the trials and tribulations of growing up. At first Jan is shallow, selfish, a spoiled brat and... well basically a tramp. But she ends up with a much nicer, well rounded young woman. I ended up really liking her. The character development is great as you get to know Jan and her girlfriends (some of them I like and some I don't) you are also introduced to Jan's very dysfunctional family... no wonder the girl is a mess. Its almost like a parallel to what real families are like and alot of ours are the same as what Jan has to go thru with. I loved how the story evolved however and she learned to deal with life as it came at her. I actually enjoyed the whole story way more than i thought i was going to!

If you want to read about an Insecure, selfish, aimless, gutless, whiny, simpering, annoying millennial protagonist with zero self-esteem but tons of bravado, this is your book.

If you enjoy "cliffhanger" type books that simply END, this is your book.

If you enjoy being "forced" to buy a book just to find out what happens to the main character, this is your book.

If you enjoy reading every single thought that goes through an authors head when he/she is writing a book (even if most of those thoughts add nothing to the storyline or character development), this is your book.

It was free, that was good.

I loved this book! I had so much fun following Jan's journey and rooting for her to learn the important lessons she needed to learn during her period of being "Between Boyfriends!" The relationships between Jan and all her friends were so interesting. And Jan's parents played an interesting role in her life. I especially liked the surprises that came out, revealing that Jan's perceptions about her mother were way off base. Not only did this book have a great plot with wonderful twists and turns and a lot of growth for the main character, but it was hysterically funny too! So happy to see there's a sequel. Will be reading that right away!

I finished this book about three weeks ago and I'm still baffled on where the plot is. I hated this book and truly did not want to finish it but felt like I couldn't in good conscience write a review without finishing it fully. The main character has been taken care of her whole life, is extremely selfish, man-loving, clingy, and annoying. She's a terrible friend and an even worst girlfriend. The book progresses and I suppose she is supposed to be coming into her own skin and growing up but to me, she still is a brat. The book really felt pointless to me. It revolved around her going to school, going through some easy jobs and hanging out with her friends. There just was no real point of reading this book - I'm upset I even wasted my money. I usually never write negative reviews but I do read tons of reviews before purchasing and I wish I would have read more of this book's true reviews because I would not have purchased it.

Boy, did I dislike Jan Weston, a shallow, self-absorbed rich girl who glommed onto men in a desperate attempt at identity. I almost stopped reading because I just couldn't stand her. Nor could I understand why some other women were friends with her. I saw no redeeming qualities. But, being chick lit, you know the change will happen, and it did. One might criticize the book for how loooonnnggg it took the author to get to the redemption--I almost did myself. But upon reflection, the author did this precisely right! We wouldn't have believed an earlier and easier transformation. Well done! Oh, and I'm so glad she learned that men can be friends and not merely boy toys!

This book had some good points and read very easily. Jan was a spoiled young lady who topped the charts for her lack of organization. She was very self-centered and had difficulty understanding why she lacked true friends and had difficulty maintaining a relationship with her boyfriend.

I found the plot was believable and actually rather interesting. What I didn't like was the dwelling on inconsequential points. It seemed some things were really over-described and made the book a little boring in spots.

That being said I did enjoy reading the book.
