About the author

Traumatized as a child by the haunted house at the Minnesota State Fair, McKenzie Rae decided to take that fear and use it to write as many twisted, spooky, and mysterious tales as she could think of. As a result, she is still afraid of the dark, and some nights, she is convinced that a monster is under her bed. But that could just be her cat.
Rae prefers to create fantasy worlds where anything can happen. The Dysfunctional Trilogy were the first three books she ever published. Since then, she has gone on to write even more chilling tales.
With every book she writes, Rae brings the dark worlds in her imagination to life, and she invites all of you to explore them with her.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIn this novella, Amelia discovers a creature in the pond of a nearby park. Initially, her neighbor, James, and her sister Claire don't believe her. Seeing is believing though. James and Claire and Hunter (one of Amelia's friends) come up with a scheme to make money selling tickets to see the "mermaid". Hunter says it's a siren, though, and sirens sang songs to lure sailors into the water so they could eat them.
A fun read, with a twist at the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2020Format: KindleI have all the Creature Feature novellas in my possession, but given that I am a fan of this author's work, I decided to start the series with this one. I'm very glad that I did. The siren was one of my favorite mythological creatures when I was a kid, yet you rarely if ever see them employed in tales of horror. McKenzie Rae did a fabulous job of bringing the creature to life. Creepy and tragic, this book is short in length, but it will stay with you long after the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe beginning started with the creepy perfection I have come to expect from Rae's books.
I loved the flow of the story and was completely hooked on knowing more about what they had discovered in the pond. As the story went along, my feelings of apprehension continued to grow. The ending was shocking and incredible. This was a truly fabulous read!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis one will have you jaw dropped and giving side eye glances to everyone and everything around you. I will never look at a pond the same. This twisty tale is a definite must read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2023Format: KindleA mysterious creature falls from the sky and lands in a nearby pond. This catches the attention of some neighborhood kids, and they don’t give up until they know what it is. Their plans are cut short when tragic things begin to happen.
Once I started reading this, I didn’t want to put it down. Rae created such an engaging story from start to finish and left us with one twisted ending. She provides a sense of calm off and on with this creature and then rips it away. I felt like I was being toyed with much like some of the characters in this book.
I enjoyed the eerie atmosphere she created as well. Personally, I wouldn’t set foot near a pond where I could see just the top half of a face staring back at me, especially at night. That’s a no thanks! Rae did a great job with this creature feature. It’s one I don’t see too often in horror, but I loved it.
Highly recommend this to those that love creepy creature features that stick with you after reading it. This one may not be soaked in gore, but it doesn’t need to be because Rae brings some unsettling terror that will have you thinking twice about dipping your toes in the water.
