Bishop to Knight One (Diviner's Game Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,180 ratings

"Jennifer has built a fascinating world that sucked me in from the first page. Deejay and Matt were hot together, and I loved their dynamic and differences in character. The story is intriguing and kept me hooked to the last page...and left me eager to start the next book!" —Nora Phoenix, bestselling MM Romance author

"
Characters that suck you in and stories that keep you captivated…definitely one of my go-to authors." --Shaw Montgomery, author of the Leashes and Lace series.

Deejay
:

I have spent every day of the last ten years taking in and caring for my sisters’ sons. I’ve built this family from the ground up, and no one is going to destroy what’s mine. Someone keeps trying to kill one of my charges, but that person won’t win. I was born with enough magic to wipe them out of existence and have zero qualms about doing that. After all, I live by the motto:

We don’t hit first, but we always hit last.

Matt:

The best thing my old man did for me and my brother was die and leave us in a Naiad’s care. Deejay is rich, powerful, and sometimes gives me heart palpitations. I didn’t plan to woo him, but I won’t ignore the attraction between us for long.

After all, I might not have much time left. I don’t know what I did to Houston’s Non-Humans, but they’re not killing me without a fight.

Bring it.

Bishop to Knight One is a 115k age-gap MM paranormal romance with an HFN ending. This is not a standalone.

Trigger warnings include: off-page past child abuse and on-page descriptive violence. In this family, the boys have tragic backstories.

Naiads value their daughters above all else, the sons are cast aside or often face worse situations. Deejay, the abandoned son of a Naiad has made it his life mission to take and raise the sons of his sisters, to protect them and keep them safe from the horrors of the world they were born into. When his sister drops of the sons of her deceased boyfriend things do not go according to plan. Matt did not expect to move into the home of a man he never met before, he did not expect to learn that he and his younger brother were members of the non-human community, he did not expect to catch feelings for the man who takes in kids of all ages and backgrounds no questions asked, and he especially did not think he would be fighting for his life against bigger forcers working against him. Deejay and Matt are put to the test as they fight to keep their family out of danger. Will they come out on top or are they pawns in a much bigger game?

Bishop to Knight One is the first book in the Diviner’s Game Trilogy and the first full length book that I have read by Jennifer Cody. Being familiar to their novella series Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees I was excited to read more of thier works. I was worried that I would not like a book that was longer than the short chaotic ones I have come to love from them but I should not have been worried. Jennifer Cody was able to build up this world that is appealing to the reader is so many ways, with unique charters and a story line that is consistent and interesting. I love that the main characters are not always conventionally beautiful, that their beauty and appeal come from their character traits. I look forward to meeting the other characters in this series. The family dynamics within this book is great, Jennifer Cody takes care to highlight what makes each character unique and how they fit in the family, which is something that sometimes falls flat in books when there is a variety of characters. I cannot wait to explore this world further.

This author has world building down to a science. The main characters are likable. Then you get introduced to other characters and open plot points and trauma, (which she does warn you about) to the point where you’re just exhausted. It’s an interesting story that makes you want to read more but ultimately you want more context and concise conclusions for the initial plot that was provided.

When I tried to read an earlier edition of this book, I didn’t get very far. A few months later, I read other books by this author and fell in love with her creativity and writing style. So, when I found out she had released a revised version of this book, I knew I had to give it a second chance. Though it does have some lingering editorial issues, none of the elements that bugged me the first time around remained. I ended up binge-reading this entire trilogy in a single weekend, and I loved every moment of it.

Cody solidly roots her worldbuilding for this universe in a few basic tenets that still result in a lot of seeming bureaucracy. However, what makes it all so complicated is also what makes it so intriguing and fun. Deejay and Matt are good men to their core, but it’s important to note that they are not human men. The non-human world is particularly violent, despite the guidelines that seem to define the violence rather than mitigate it, and Deejay and Matt are very much part of that world. But their moments of magical and physical violence always stem from protecting their family, especially the children they have claimed as their own. This shared connection is what leads to their developing relationship, which is both sweet and spicy in appropriate turns.

The external storyline that envelops them as their relationship evolves is also deliciously twisty. These two heroes are protagonists in their own lives, obviously, but I started to get the impression that they’re not exactly the heroes of the overall story. Cody introduces plenty of other characters along the way, and I found myself equally drawn to them and invested in their potential relationships. Overall, the story ends the way the opening book in a trilogy should: with a solid moment of connection for the main characters and plenty of opportunities for further storytelling. (I can’t make any predictions here because I wrote this after finishing the full trilogy, but I will acknowledge that the next book did not go in the direction I expected.)

3.0 out of 5 stars review for book 1 and 2 of the series
Reviewed in Germany on October 7, 2023
Book one: The start of the series is an entertaining mix of slice and life family life, love story between different species, lots of steam and excitement. It‘s an interesting world-building. The last third I didn‘t like so much but the end was satisfying. The characters were lovable.

Book two: This one is a lot darker and there is a lot of cruelty. Also the characters are not very lovable. I skipped a lot and will not continue to read the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Worth the read!
Reviewed in Australia on December 13, 2020
Wow! What a fantastic start to the series! I was spellbound from the start. I believe this is the authors debut novel too, so that's even more impressive. It was such a great length too, so you could really sink into thr story and let ir carry you away. It wasn't rushed and didn't cut any corners. It was a fun read with fresh ideas for this genre.

I always look for worldbuilding and unique characters who are developed well - this book nailed both! This is such a unique spin on supernatural beings and how they all fit together. I loved how they were all introduced and how the world was built up over the course of the book.

The characters were wonderful - both Matt and Deejay, and also the secondary characters too. I loved that the story was told in dual POV, and found this definitely helped with the depth of character development, as well as the worldbuilding and story. To have Matt describe how he interpreted the auras he saw, and then Deejay also talk about how he could curse people - it was a wonderful read!

This is a book I'd recommend, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I'm also keen to check out other works by this author as she releases them as I loved the writing style. Definitely worth the read!

Warning! This book is impossible to put down! Do not start before a busy work day, you’ll get nothing done 😂. Matt and Deejay grip your heart from the first scene and it’s all uphill from there! Sooo happy with this amazing collection of magical creatures within our contemporary world. Can’t wait to ready the next one in this series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Meh (mild spoilers)
Reviewed in France on June 18, 2023
The characters are fun, but there are SO MANY secondary characters to keep track of that it was overwhelming. Sometimes the protagonist of a story exists in a void, and very few of their relationships are ever shown. This book is on the other end of the spectrum, to the extreme, too much for me anyway.

The spicy scenes are quite nice, no issue there.

I enjoyed the plot at first, learning how Matt and DJ were learning to fit together and about Matt's origins. BUT, I personally feel it should have been the whole book. All the actions thrown at the protagonists pushes everything to be rushed, leaving us with many underdeveloped characters and plot holes. Those plot holes might be cliffhangers for the next books in the series, but they didn't feel that way.
There are some antagonists but again, we get very little interaction with them and no explanation of their motives whatsoever, which is quite frustrating.

This book got me from the first page. The world that Jennifer Cody weaves within the pages of this book is truly fantastic.
The idea of Deejay adopting his sister’s sons is fabulous. Then when Matt and Cary turn up things start to go wrong, but also right.
This book has it all, action, adventure, death, chaos, curses, divination, non humans, magic and even a dragon!
Then there’s the romance and hot steamy adult time.
So set aside some time, get in some snacks, get comfortable and start reading!
