- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2021A young girl, naively trying to grow up too fast, throws the lives of her family and close friends into chaos. Cultures and customs collide into an ever-tightening knot of chance and deceit. At some point each thread in that knot begins to fray. Who will be the first to snap?
This is one of those rare stories that I got so caught up in, I lay in bed glued to the pages, not realizing the sun was coming up. Just at that time, I reached the end of this mind-boggling plot. The ending shocked me awake, more than the realization of approaching daylight.
I have read quite a few of this author’s stories. The characters are unique and have distinct personalities – and purposes – in this plot, which contributes to the chaos, secrecy, and dread. The endings always take me by surprise. The twisted endings surely are the signature of this author’s work. No way could I have anticipated the climax of this plot. The author’s stories, especially the unexpected and shocking conclusions, bring the only possible finish to a situation and makes for extremely satisfying reading. I recommend any of this author’s books and look forward to more.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2019This author has used Juxtapositioning of characters, using chapters to describe the activities of each, the desires, the life of each, one against the other in the past. In this book she puts up a young girl, the family of the girl (Muslims), the girl's lover (an affront against the family), the mother of the lover, and the assassin to create her story. Bringing them together, separating them, using a little political statement of her attitude toward the honor killing of Muslim women by their family, she creates a wonderful thriller. Sometimes it moves a little slowly but as with all books it grows in momentum until a crashing penultimate series of scenes takes place. As usual, with Ms. Griffith's-Jones, you must wait for and watch for a major twist in the story. The wait is well worth it for in the end this is a really good read that anyone can enjoy. Give it a shot. You will not be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2020The book for review is “Black Sparrow” by A. J. Griffiths-Jones. This falls in the genre of action and adventure.
Normally I start my review with the main character. However, this novel has a few
I will start with Farida who is a Muslim woman with a husband, two kids and who live in London. She is saving money on the side unknown to her husband. After years of marriage she has gained weight and is in a marriage that is another but loving.
Uzma, her daughter, is interested in art and also her art teacher. Stealing money from her mom’s secret account she runs away to Paris to meet up with her lover. The problem being she has not told him he is coming. Arriving at her destination her luggage gets picked up by another passenger. She has his now.
Colin Foster, who has mistakenly taken Uzma’s luggage, goes about his business and to his destination-Collette Joubert’s hotel. He wishes more than a friendship with her.
What Uzma has left behind is a hot mess. Her parents are frantically trying to find her and their shambles of a marriage continues to disintegrate.
The Black Sparrow soon has his next job. What he does not know or anyone else in Paris is that he was hired by Uzma’s dad to do away with her lover who has now disgraced his only daughter.
My thoughts:
This book had me turning the pages quickly as I wanted to know what was going to happen next. The characters were delightfully done, the pace was amazing and the story was weaved exactly how it was suppose to be done.
The ending was perfect. I am so glad I got this book to review.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2019Initially, I didn't think this book would be my cup of tea. I, then, read a preview and it drew me right in; so, I bought the book. It was a fascinating read. Interesting to read about the cultural differences. Good characters. I was totally unprepared for the twist at the end. Loved the book and would recommend.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2020A plot that relies on too many coincidences, wooden stereotypical characters and an annoying POV shift in every chapter made me regret starting this stinker. 1 Star, not recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Suspensful Tale
Uzma Fariq is in love. Leaving her Muslim family behind in London, she secretly travels to Paris to reacquaint with her lover, Sylvain. But her plan slowly unravels as she arrives at the boarding house with someone else’s luggage and she’s unable to reconnect with Sylvain.
This is a unique story filled with secrets, mystery, and several twists right up until the last page. The tale is told from the point of view of each character. It is well done as the heading of every chapter lets the reader know just whose head they’re in. The story is fast paced, and I could hardly wait to read what happened next.
This is the first of AJ Griffiths-Jones’ novels that I’ve read, and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read
After finishing my English Degree, my way of reading books has become so critical that I very rarely find a book that I don't find fault with. However, after reading Black Sparrow I can honestly say that I truly enjoyed it from start to finish. The characters are realistic, all fighting their own hidden battles. Just when the reader believes that they have each character pigeonholed and that they know all there is to know about each one, something new is discovered that constantly puts "the cat amongst the pigeons". There are some great twists in the plot which impels the reader to devour more. An excellent storyline and a highly recommended book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A TENSE THRILLER WITH THE WOW FACTOR!
Having read and enjoyed a few of Ms Griffiths-Jones's novels, I was really looking forward to reading Black Sparrow. This book is now my favourite of her works, it is a fascinating and brilliant novel.
The story is told through multiple points of view each one narrated in first person. I loved reading the different character's perspective, the author cleverly draws the reader in with a superbly crafted cast of diverse and interesting characters.
The story centres around a traditional UK Muslim family whose lives are thrown into disarray when the 20 year old daughter Uzma goes missing. The story follows Uzma to Paris, where she is hoping to be reunited with her lover Sylvain, but her hopes for a new life are thwarted by the interference of the people around her and it soon becomes clear that she has become trapped in a web of lies and danger where everyone seems to be hiding secrets.
I flew through this book in a few days, keen to find out what would happen. It is clear that it has been well researched and the attention to detail is brilliant. The writing was in my opinion faultless, it flowed well and was utterly compelling. There were some harrowing scenes in the novel which were heartbreaking and tugged at my emotions. A truly brilliant, inventive plot which was different to anything I've ever read. Lots of tension and surprise twists throughout the book which culminates in a surprise finale that ends with a bang. A brilliant book. Five shiny stars - WOW!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping thriller
This is the third book I have read by this author and from the opening sentence I found myself sinking into the story. The author has a way of drawing her readers in and I loved the domestic intimacy, the thoughtfulness and attention to detail. The story is told from multiple viewpoints, chapter by chapter and what unfolds as a young Muslim woman, Uzma, flees her family in search of a new life is confronting. Overall Black Sparrow is a thrilling and well-paced tale with the essential twists along the way as it builds to a devastating finish. I loved the portrait of Paris in the story too.
