This Blighted Expedition - a novel of the Walcheren campaign of 1809: Book 2 of the Manxman series Kindle Edition
Austria is back in the war and London is committed to a new campaign in Europe. A force of 40,000 men and 600 ships gathers along the south coast of England. They are destined for Walcheren, and a lightning strike against the French dockyards on the Scheldt.
Captain Hugh Kelly RN is once again embroiled in a joint operation with the army with his old adversary Sir Home Popham, a man who never forgets a perceived slight. Alfred Durrell, Hugh’s first lieutenant, is on secondment as Popham’s aide, a posting which places him at the heart of the campaign as relations between the army and navy begin to deteriorate.
Meanwhile, in the second battalion of the 110th infantry, Captain Ross Mackenzie arrives to take command of the light company and finds himself quickly at odds with a fellow officer, while Lieutenant Giles Fenwick is obliged to choose between regimental loyalty and personal integrity.
In Flushing, Katja de Groot finds the business she inherited from her husband threatened when the British take over her home. In England, Roseen Kelly waits for her husband's return, growing more and more concerned as news of victory at Flushing is clouded by more sinister reports.
As the campaign begins to crumble under bad weather, poor planning and divided leadership, it seems that retreat may be the only option. But as the troops begin to arrive home, it is clear that something has gone badly wrong with Lord Chatham's Grand Expedition -- for in the damp, mosquito-ridden dykes and canals of Walcheren, the British army faces an enemy more deadly than the French...

About the author

Lynn Bryant was born and raised in London's East End. She studied History at University and had dreams of being a writer from a young age. Since this was clearly not something a working class girl made good could aspire to, she had a variety of careers including a librarian, NHS administrator, relationship counsellor, manager of an art gallery and owner of an Irish dance school before realising that most of these were just as unlikely as being a writer and took the step of publishing her first book.
She now lives in the Isle of Man and is married to a man who understands technology, which saves her a job, and has two grown-up children and two Labradors. She is passionate about history, with a particular enthusiasm for the Napoleonic era. When not writing, she walks her dogs, reads anything that's put in front of her and makes periodic and unsuccessful attempts to keep a tidy house.
Lynn writes historical novels, mainly set during the Napoleonic era and prides herself on meticulous research. Two of her novels "An Unwilling Alliance" and "This Blighted Expedition" have been shortlisted for the Society for Army Historical Research Fiction prize.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2023As opposed to her Peninsular War series, all of which are romance novels with some history, and some of which are dangerously close to bodice rippers. I very much enjoy all her books - genuine page turners. However, in this novel I also felt I learned a great deal and the characters all seemed vivid and plausible.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2019This story based on the Walcheran Campaign during the Napoleonic Wars era is told from the standpoint as seen mostly through the eyes of the British Navy. This failed campaign was a joint effort of British army and navy.
The story brings us into the lives of Captains MacKenzie and Kelly and Lt Durrell. The campaign itself is fraught with problems from the beginning and the author makes it very real using fictional characters to give us a sense of the confusion, adverse conditions and human frailty in some detail. I got a real sense of the issues involved here, both from a civilian and militaristic standpoint.
The characters are well developed and described and there are many. I did find it a bit difficult keeping the track at times given the enormity of this campaign, but for the most part the plot kept my interest.
This is a good series to get a real feel for the frustrations and political and diabolical issues of the day. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2020Would recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed Sharpe or similar. Detailed and forceful characters that you would have to love.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2022As I sat in an ER awaiting an evaluation by an MD, I began the 1st of this series. It got me through hours of waiting for what turned out to be a PA, test results, and discharge with meds. As I convalesce, I started this 2d book as the meds took on the ailment. Although almost dreary with pestilence and slow war management, the characters within this book are warm and interesting. I liked the 1st book better on the whole, the development of the IRIS's 1st Lt. through out this book made me correct a snap decision I had formed of him.
I was shocked that there was no book 3, when I looked just now. I hope there is enough left in other series to tide me over until it can be published.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2020I stumbled onto the Penninsular Series, read all of them and then the Manxman series. Ms. Bryant is a marvellous writer! I've read Sharpe and many other series about this period and these books stand out. The author goes much deeper into the personal lives of the characters and one begins to really care about them. I look forward to her future books very much. Read these series...you will be glad you did!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2019I enjoyed the story so much that I spent all the weekend reading it. I Could not put it away. I loved the different people, but my heroe is of course Alfred Durrell. I admired his integrity and courage and hope to meet him in your future books.I have a master in history and enjoy Historical novels. I have been waiting for more Books from the Peninsula wars.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2020The purchase of a commission is bad enough, but total disregard for the men and families is almost unbelievable. It is no wonder that England suffered so many unsuccessful military actions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved seeing Captain Kelly back!!
It was so good to jump back into Lynn Bryant’s world even if I can’t wait for the next Peninsula book. This was a riveting story. It may not have had as many of her brilliantly written battle scenes but it was so full of the beautifully described relationships between the main characters and I believe that is what really sets this author apart from many many others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-moving, meticulously researched, very believable
Not as much to my taste as the Peninsular War Saga, but still outstanding. The detail on the lives of both the soldiers and the Naval people is excellent and highly believable, and it’s an unusual story in that it focuses on a campaign which was disastrous for both services, and which did no credit to the leadership of either. It is full of fascinating detail on the procedures of logistics, and the sometimes fractious relationship between Army and Navy at the time. The characters are strong and memorable, and the romantic element both believable and touching without being overly sentimental.
