Block Shot: An Enemies-to-Lovers Second Chance Standalone Romance (HOOPS Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 6,474 ratings

From New York Times bestselling author Kennedy Ryan comes the steamy, powerful second installment of the Hoops trilogy.

If Jared Foster had a dollar for every time Banner Morales made his heart skip a beat―the heart everyone assumes is frozen over―he'd be richer than he already is. He's found success as a sports agent by always assuming "no" means "I'll think about it." And he knows Banner's thinking about him. Her simmering anger? The way she puts him in his place? Foreplay. She thinks she's won the game, but they're just getting started.

If Banner had a dollar for every time Jared broke her heart, she'd have exactly one dollar. One epic failure of a night. After parting on such bad terms, Banner has no intention of ever giving Jared a second chance. She's found success in a field ruled by men like him. She's learned to call the shots and block them when she has to.

So she'll ignore the way he makes her heart pound. Sure, he seems carved from her most private fantasies, but she can get past that.

She's got her one dollar, and Jared won't have her.

Give this book 5 stars is a disservice. It deserves much much more!
I have been incredibly lucky lately to read many great books and I kept waiting for the book that was going to break my streak of great reads. Only I expected that streak to break with a book that was ‘less than’ – you know, a 3-star read in lei of a 4 or 5 star read. Conversely, I did get a book that broke the streak… because it surpassed everything I had been reading… Kennedy Ryan writes outstanding romances. Having read the last five books she’s written, I knew that Block Shot would be sexy and captivating, but I was still unprepared for just how truly incredible I would find this book. I literally have no words. Block Shot is without a doubt my favorite book Kennedy Ryan has written. Of those books I have read by Kennedy Ryan, I can absolutely say that she writes deeply moving stories that capture readers attention within minutes of starting. Furthermore, Ryan’s stories keep you on the edge of your seat and unable to break away until you’ve read the very last words. And that’s if you’re lucky… because there are those of us who continue to process her stories long after we’ve read the final words. I have spent days digesting Block Shot and I’m still stuck on the beauty of this particular book. There is little I can tell you about the characters or the plot without ruining the story for you and a book this beautiful needs to be discovered without spoilers. Kennedy Ryan’s words are poetic and stunning. Her characters are memorable, and the plot of Block Shot was original and incredibly addictive! Brannon Morales, the Killer with a Heart and Jared Foster, the Killer, have a romance so intense, it will set your kindles on fire. Their love story isn’t an easy one and not everyone will agree with choices they make. I certainly struggled with a few, but what I could not deny was the absolute rightness of their relationship despite the odds. I LOVED Brannon. Her strength, and goodness was incredible. Banner was so real and she’s honestly one of my favorite heroines of all time. She owns her flaws and has learned to love herself regardless of what jabs are thrown her way. I identified with her more than I can possibly express--Brannon is the heroine we are all searching for in a romance novel. Kennedy wrote a couple that represents genuine people – not fictional characters. The chemistry between Jared and Brannon was intense and sexy as he11. You’ll need more than fresh batteries or a change of panties after reading this enemies-to-lovers, second chance romance… that I can promise you. I truly can’t praise this Block Shot enough. Do no miss this book, do not pass up the chance to read Block Shot and fall in-love with Kennedy Ryan’s writing and characters.

    4.5 block shot stars!
Kennedy Ryan, you've killed it with this series. You've made me fall for a guy that seemed to be cold hearted to some, but also a "tell it like it is" kind of guy. He definitely met his match in a woman years ago. Banner and Jared forever!

Oh my goodness. I don't even know what to say about this book and this series of standalones. Kennedy Ryan does it again with her way of reeling you in with all the feels and connecting the characters to real life. With Block Shot, she takes a past of two characters and slowly builds it up with major sexual tension combined with a love of family and love of friends and mixes it all together to create the perfect formula for these two people that on paper are so different.

Block Shot is told in dual POV from Jared and Banner. It starts with them in college and then fast forwards to Banner getting her shot at a job she's always wanted to excel in. She's smart, fierce and fiery. I liked her from the get go. Even if she didn't completely like herself. But she worked hard and proved to herself that she was worth it. That is a woman to write a book around. And Jared? Dang it. I liked him from almost the beginning too. The way he "saw" Banner and wanted her. THAT was attractive. Add that together with his naughty mouth? Yowza!

"You like me, huh?..You mean in an 'I think you're smart and have a great personality' way?"....
"No, I mean in an 'I want to f....you' kind of way.".."Any other questions?"

But there always has to be drama and that drama kept them apart for years. They both had their time to grow and learn and build up what they wanted to be. They both became successful in their own rights, but Jared became more cold and calculated. He is always a man of his word, but he takes things on with blinders. Like a racehorse toward a finish line. His only opponent, in his eyes, is himself.
Banner, on the other hand does things with heart and feelings. She's always looking at the opposition but she's also looking to win. She's a fighter with a heart. That's why I had to always root for her. Even when I knew she was fighting herself with feelings and actions of what she should and shouldn't do. I've been there. Even the right (or wrong) decisions aren't always right. I won't go into details of this story, as you can read the synopsis above, but I will say that Ryan knows people and knows how to write heart.

Kennedy Ryan hit another book out of the park. This book isn't filled with as much darkness as Long Shot was (which you don't have to read to understand this one, I just suggest you do), but it is filled with a love of two people that saw the good in one another. It is filled with a love of friends and family that you are there for. NO MATTER WHAT. You've signed on through the thick and thin and you fight along with them. It is filled with a love of culture and body awareness. It is filled with a love of succeeding and having it all. It's a book that made me feel good and made me want to fight right along with the characters. It's absolute beauty in the written word.

"For good is too sanitized. I want your dirt and your pain and your darkness. Your weakness and your flaws.....I don't want you for good, Banner. I want you forever."

And that, folks is what we all want in a love that will stand the test of time. And Ms Ryan gave that to us in spades in a story filled with everything that is good about second chance romances and the trials and tribulations we go through to get to it. Because when you've met your match, you recognize.

Wow, what a fantastically, poignant, beautiful, painful read. This is a relatively new to me author, only my 2nd or 3rd book by her but boy oh boy was it a banger!
I loved both Jared and Banner! He was a sexy popular hustler in college who literally got any girl he wanted and that wasn't even his main drive in school.
Nope, Jared's passion was power. He wanted to be THE sports agent of his time and didn't allow anyone to get on his way. On the climb he met other powerful men in a secret society who helped open doors for each other in a huge network around the world.
His initial job was so disgusting that he refused and dropped out of the running to be able to join. He did his own thing but ended up in trouble anyway. He also had what he thought was a secret crush on Banner even though he was dating a girl who looked like a pörn star I guess. He was attracted to Banners mind and felt her drive and hard work were only comparable to his own.
Then there is Banner herself. A spicy Latina woman who only wanted to be the best sports agent herself!
She was overweight and VERY self conscious. After being hurt, she kept people at an arms length and never let anyone one in. The 1st to go to college in her family, she took her studies seriously and kept on track.
Randomly enough, her and Jared became fast friends in one of their mutual classes and since she felt she'd never have a shot with someone so gorgeous Banner was able to be herself and just be friends with Jared. Not realizing he too had a secret burning torch for her! We take a journev of discover but also a lot of pain. I did the read and listen and just happened to be listening toward the end when something devastating happens and immediately became to bawl my eyes out. I was set on a rom-com at best (& I did laugh a lot so it WAS a true thought but) that part that happens tried to break me. I shed a few tears and for some reason, wasn't ready for it.
Teddy Hamilton and Seraphina brought it! Both helped bring the story to life and neither "overplayed" their role/narration and that was appreciated.
All in all another banger that I just fell in love with. This book had it all and those are my favorite kind. Not dark, zero abuse and an HEA?! Yeah, a great break from the norm and a story that will stay with me for awhile.

“But the daughter of a lion is still a lion...” that is Banner to the bone and Jared knew it early on! It is one of the quotes that will probably stuck with me forever. That’s what Kennedy Ryan does - she gives the reader stories that are so much more than just a simple romance book. She tackles topics that are so real, that touch you so deeply, that you can relate to so much.

Banner is and always have been a “double-digit girl in a single-digit world”. The way she was and is dealing with all the insecurities and doubts, is something I could absolutely relate to. It is one thing that make me fall in love with her right from the beginning. But I also admire her strength, her drive, her passion and her heart to achieve what she wants even when others are doubting her.

Those are the same character traits that attracted Jared right from the beginning and made him fall for her even more. He always saw so much more than just her outer appearance. He is just as driven and a hard one to deal with. Right from the beginning he claims himself to be selfish and always gets what he wants whatever it takes. Playing dirty including. But it’s also something that makes you fall for him hard, because the way he tries to persuade Banner to give him a second chance? SWOON!

These two have a history and I loved that we got to see it in a straight timeline with a few flashbacks to the important stages. The characters are never wavering from their true nature, just developing over time and mature just as is to be expected when growing up to become adults. It is their story that needs to be told the way it is. You can’t deny the chemistry between these two. You can’t ignore those heat of moments and the reactions resulting from those.

Block Shot is so well written and thoughtfully composed. It has the right amount of romance, thoughtfulness, heat, anxiety, heartbreak and credibility. I was emotionally invested from the first to the last word. From feeling so close to Banner because I could relate to her insecurities, to wanting to bump a pillow because there’s no Jared around here, to like and dislike secondary characters and swooning again over Iris and August.

Kennedy Ryan just has this wonderful amazing talent to write, I can’t get enough of and just want to read the next book of hers. Block Shot is definitely one of my favorite reads of 2018!

Block Shot is only my second Kennedy Ryan read (I know, I know - I am so far behind the times) and once again I am blown away with this book.'

I am a sucker for a friends to lovers, second chance romance, and Block Shot had all the feels.

This isn't just a fun, happy go lucky story. Ms Ryan doesn't shy away from the harder, darker topics. And she does them well. Extremely well.

Block Shot is real, it is raw, it had me running the whole gamut of emotions as I laughed, I cried, I threw my kindle across the room in anger and frustration.

Jared and Banner's relationship has never been smooth sailing, and with each twist and turn their lives took, my heart needed to find out what was happening in their lives.

I so want to be Banner when I grow up. She is the whole kit and kaboodle. She is strong, she is compassionate, her insecurities fly off the page and there is some of her in each and every one of us. I just adore every single thing about her.

Jared is frustrating, oh so frustrating. But you can't help but like him - even when he is a douche! You have to admire a man (or woman) who knows what they want and don't give up on it.

I really enjoyed getting to know a bit more of August and Iris and Sarai from Long Shot too in this story.

Even though this is only my second KR read, she has become an instant one-click author for me.

I am really looking forward to the next book in the Hoops Series, Hook Shot. I also need to go back and get my hands on every other book she has written!

    Give me more!

I was afraid to continue this series and it has taken me awhile to read the 2nd book because the first book destroyed me.
This book was a fantastic ride.
I'm not a huge fan of the second chance trope however block shot was great.
The two main characters were everything and I love Jared's attitude of "I know who I am and I don't care".
Also, loved the growth in confidence from Banner. Words are harsh and have an everlasting impression on who we are.

5.0 out of 5 stars I absolutely loved this character driven, romantic, SECOND CHANCE love story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 9, 2018
Kennedy Ryan never fails to astonish me with her writing prowess. I absolutely loved this character driven, romantic, SECOND CHANCE love story and the characters whom take centre stage. Banner Morales and Jared Foster were firm friends until the devastating day they are not and it is from this point that the love story takes flight in full romantic alpha male style in the formidable world of NBA. Block Shot is the second story in the Hoops series but can most definitely be read and thoroughly enjoyed as a standalone. It effortlessly flows toggling between the first-person perspective of Jared and Banner. It made my reading heart so very happy. I smiled throughout so much of the narrative, highlighted huge sections that made me swoon with feels. It definitely shows the lighter side of Kennedy Ryan’s writing style but, even so, complex emotions are depicted and develop at the perfect pace through the narrative. The conflict of emotion within the character’s thoughts teamed with the authors compelling storytelling style made me shed emotional tears. The pivotal part August (the male protagonist from, ‘Long Shot,’ the first Hoops novel) plays in Jared’s thought process is simply beautiful and heart-warming, I loved his input. Readers who have experienced, 'Long Shot,' will adore this aspect and those that haven’t, well it matters not one bit but it will make you see what a great guy August is and compel you to dash to his story.

I felt the intense attraction between Banner and Jared who depict a relationship with growth and convincing transitions within the story timeline. Banner and Jared have both reached the pinnacle of their careers as sports agents for the elite of the basketball world. Jared wants to rule the world, he’s arrogant, powerful, sexy as anything, and knows exactly what he wants and I loved seeing him execute his desires. He made me laugh and swoon and sigh. There is something very sexy about a man who finds a woman he loves to distraction and puts her at the heart of his world, despite his alpha tendencies. Banner is the softer side of the story. Kindness and light. Strong and resilient. I love her so much and respected all the decisions she found herself having to make as the plotline thickened.

Every time Kennedy Ryan presents readers with a novel she gives something different in terms of character and plot. She keeps things fresh, organic and unique. Banner is a smart, super intelligent woman with inner strength, she has to be to succeed in her chosen career, but keeping it real, as always, Kennedy shows how even the strongest of women can have insecurities, vulnerabilities that can shape their thoughts feelings and behaviours and it is the execution of these aspects that made me warm to her so very much, especially in the early stages of the novel. This ensured that I rooted for her all the way through, felt her pain, her emotional turmoil and her passion. Her struggles resonated with me, like they will with so many other women who feel some kind of imperfection but have the capacity to overcome these feelings with unconditional and resounding love.

Kennedy Ryan takes you deep into the story, ensnares your heart with her characters and their emotions, each time fooling me into a new favourite, when in reality everything she writes is exceptional and unique and, in my top, top reads. The links made within the narrative of this novel are stunning. Subtle reminders of early happenings in the story, of experiences and thoughts linked back to later in the prose evoking strong feelings and emotion. There are moments that touched me deeply because of the way she weaves her prose, layering the nuances of her characters and their story, developing both convincingly.
