Blood Magic and Brandy: A Snow White Retelling (The Lorean Tales Book 1) Kindle Edition
Too many people tell Crown Princess Ranunculus what to do, how to act, and who to be. As her twenty-first birthday approaches, so do new, unwanted responsibilities on her father’s council. The worst of these is the search for a royal consort, a marriage that will prioritize the good of the kingdom over the preferences of her own heart. Rane squeezes as much joy into her days as possible before her obligations take over her life.
After the Baron of Otero’s long illness left him incapable of governing, the honor should have passed to Lord Nevar as the eldest son. Yet through a convenient quirk of the law, his stepmother holds all the power. He’s been posing as a worthless lordling but now has a chance to prove himself as an ambassador. If he plays his cards right, he can finally claim his proper place. Though intrigued by the outlandish princess, Nevar is too far below her in rank to make a good match, and he has a barony to fix after much neglect.
The two flirt shamelessly, knowing their destinies lie elsewhere. When Nevar is framed for murder, Rane comes to his rescue and sends him to her friends in the forest. Proving his innocence is harder than she thought, and time is running out. Nevar wants to leave, Rane wants him to stay, and someone wants him dead.

About the author

Emily Michel read her first fairy tale before kindergarten and has been fascinated with speculative fiction of all kinds ever since. She’s traveled the world as a military family member, calling many places in the US and Europe home. She settled in Arizona a few years ago with her husband and kids.
When not writing, Emily reads, walks, crochets, and pets her feline overlords. Emily has volunteered her time to community organizations for the past twenty years and looks forward to taking a break in 2022 to concentrate on her writing and editing, which is a nice way of saying she’s tired and needs some “me time.”
Socially awkward and extremely introverted, she nevertheless participates in social media. Check out EmiMiWriter on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and even, dear God, TikTok. If you want to be the first to know release dates, cover reveals, and sales, sign up for her newsletter

- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love fairytale inspired tales, and I think this one may be my favorite. The characters are lovable and interesting. The world building was immersive, and the plot was original and fast-paced. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fairytale retelling, romance, and magic.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2022Format: KindleBlood Magic and Brandy by Emily Michel is an adult fantasy romance. It is a Snow White retelling, but somewhat gender-swapped.
Princess Ranunculus - or Rane - is our often-clumsy, breeches-wearing warrior princess who prefers adventure and sneaking out of the castle to her royal duties. I really liked her character arc, of learning how to take on more responsibilities and becoming more comfortable in her own skin. Nevar helps a bit with that, taking all of her quirks in stride.
One of my favorite quotes is when she's talking about how it's difficult being the heir, especially when she's not comfortable with "a lot of girl things." To which, Nevar's response is:
"If you’re a girl and you do something, doesn’t that make it a girl thing?” -ch. 10. Love that.
Lord Nevar is a lower-ranking baron's son with an evil stepmother whose primary goal is to eliminate him in her quest for power and wealth. Nevar's name means "snow" in the ancient language of our fantasy world.
After one of his stepmother's plans to frame him for assault and murder, Nevar has to flee to the forest with the help of Princess Rane and her pixie friends. While he spends his days in the pixie cottage, Rane searches for clues to prove his innocence and his stepmother's guilt.
The romance is a bit insta-love, with Rane and Nevar experiencing attraction from their first meeting. The hurdles along the way are Rane's princess duties and Nevar's lower status, but all-in-all, it's a sweet and satisfying romance.
Since this book is adult fantasy, there are some steamy and explicit scenes. There is also significant swearing and some depictions of violence.
I found the world-building to be quite interesting, and the author does a nice job of painting beautiful scenes around the characters. The book starts out a bit slow, but the action picks up at around 40%.
I would recommend this book to lovers of fairytale retellings, strong heroines, adult fantasy, and pixie magic :)

- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGreat characters & personality! I like the Fairies & their magic
ways.
Can't wait to read more of her books!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2025Format: KindleAwesome fantasy romance! Really enjoyed it! Steamy and romantic, exciting and suspenseful. Addictive storyline and characters..
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2022Format: KindleI absolutely loved reading this book. Its a snowwhiye retelling with a twist. Rane is a princess who doesnt really want to take over but as the oldest child she will. She prefers to ride horses and wear pants because of pockets. She is incredibly relateable in that sense. She is rebellious and always ditching her guards. She knows all sorts of secret passageways which i love. Nevar has made a point of looking like a lazy womanizing man. He doesn't want anyone to know of his plans on taking his birthright back from his stepmother. He dad is very ill and his stepmother has taken over as baroness. He's taken up negotiating with another kingdom to earn his birthright back. Things do not go as great as planned. There is magic, fairies and a godmother. There are all sorts of magical creatures. This book is absolutely amazing to read. Its quite different retelling of Snowwhite. I just loved it!!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2022Format: KindleDo you enjoy fairytale retellings? Fairies? Pixie Magic? This will be one for you if you enjoy Snow White!. From the beginning of the book I was hooked and wanted to know more. For me there were a couple of late nights. This is a NA Fantasy Romance. The characters and plot were done so well. I loved Rane, there were times that I could relate to her (which I love in books).

- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2022Format: KindleI was an ARC reader for this story and I’m so glad I stumbled upon it! I love fairytale retellings but normally shy away from Snow White stories since I don’t like the damsel in distress trope
But I was blown away by the story! The cover and title caught my eye, but within the first two chapters the story caught my heart. I loved the gender role reversal and loved both of the main characters with all my heart. Their chemistry and banter was everything! The story was intense and surprising at times, I couldn’t put it down!
I’ll definitely be buying a physical copy and highly recommend this to anyone looking for a tale of a brave, stubborn, clumsy princess who fights for justice and her equally stubborn, handsome, charismatic lordling. Their story was perfect and one that will stay on my mind for a long time.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2022Format: KindleLet me say, EM can write about magic like its real. Her visuals are stunning. This is the second of her books I have read, (First being Witchhazel and Wolfsbane) and she consistently gets it right. For this book I was actually a critique partner in early stages, and the end result didn't disappoint.
I have to say, Nevar is my favorite character. I love how he's smart enough to fake that he's weak in order to hide his strengths. I flipped back and forth with 4 or 5 stars because to me Rane still seems too irresponsible to rule a kingdom, but as the book says, the two MCs together make a heck of a team.
I would love a sequel to see how they work it all out ;-) .
