An Old-Fashioned Ghost Story

Twelve-year-old Troy Mulvaney convinces some friends to go up onto Spirit Mountain to find the gorge where the evil ghost Harrity Scarrity and his demon dog are said to prey on hikers. He’s learned from his father that his great-great-great grandfather, the town bully, had butchered gentle Harrity’s dog then buried Harrity alive in a cave Native Americans believe is a portal for dark spirits, and the spirits corrupted him. When Troy digs open the cave, all hell breaks lose.

Esme Dumas has spent her entire remembered life the prisoner of a crazy, abusive woman in a dark basement, and now she has escaped. Something about the name of Bloodmoon Cove and the privately-owned nature park draws her, and she takes up residence in a deserted cabin through the harsh Wisconsin winter.

John Kotter’s dad owns Bloodmoon Cove and has acted as its ranger, but he disappears one day near the evil gorge. John comes home to take over the park, to find his dad’s body, and to face his own demons.

These three people create a perfect storm that brings terror and death to the people around the mountain and love to lost souls.

A very atmospheric and old-fashioned ghost story, a sweet romance, and redemptive tale of lost souls being found through love.

One hundred years ago, a boy named Harrity Kotter lived. He loved his dog, Charles, like a brother. Harrity was a gentle boy. It made him the target of bullies during his school years, and even after. Dennis Mulvaney was the leader of those bullies. One Halloween night Dennis got drunk and got mean. He killed Charles in front of Harrity, before sealing the traumatized young man in a cave. Every year since then, at least one person had disappeared in that area. Legend says that people sometimes still see Charles, the ghost dog, roaming the lands, protecting Harrity’s remains. It is also said that the dog brings Harrity one person each year to consume.

Twelve-year-old Troy Mulvaney and his friends love urban legends and planned to be famous by recovering Harrity’s bones. Rumor is that the cave is behind a waterfall and cannot be found until it wants to be. The boys do find the cave and begin pulling off the rocks blocking the entrance, but Troy becomes trapped in the rocks. His friends abandon Troy when they are attacked by something mean. All the while, a dog barked.

John Kotter had left Bloodmoon Cove years ago to be a law enforcement ranger in Arizona. When his father died in the mountains, it put John in charge of Bloodmoon Cove Park. John returns to find a squatter, calling herself Esme Dumas in the park’s host house. Having noticed how well Esme had been caring for the park – and since his father had obviously known her – John offers her a job. John knows from the beginning that she has given him a false name and that she is running from some sort of trouble; however, he also knows that she is an innocent and naïve young lady. If his father trusted Esme enough to allow her to stay in the park, that was good enough for him. From their first encounter, John and Esme are attracted to each other. But can John fully open up and let a woman into his heart after what happened to him previously? And can Esme ever trust John enough to tell him or her past?

While John and Esme begin to learn about each other, Sheriff Gray Mecham is suspecting Esme had something to do with Troy’s disappearance. But the sheriff is the least of the couple’s worries. Each night, all animal sounds halt. Then a lone dog begins his wild, eerie barks which are soon followed by the screaming of something evil. It is something that wants revenge after being sealed away for a hundred years. Now it is free and each night it sounds closer than the one before.

***** FIVE STARS! This author has written many stories, in multiple genres, but I feel that THIS type of story fits her best. It has the flavor of an old Gothic Romance (of which the few I still hoard will never be tossed out) yet it can still be classified as a Christian Romance.

The characters are well developed. They never felt flat or two dimensional. The female is frightened, naïve, untrusting, and often compared to a fairy or sprite. The male has made mistakes in his past and tries to keep an open mind – be it about the living or the dead. If this is a taste of what the rest of the series will be like, then I refuse to wait a second longer to begin book two. *****

The story opens on Lake Superior in a secluded town called Bloodmoon Cove with volatile weather, suspicious folks, and newly awakened ghosts bent on revenge. Esmeralda "Esme" Dumas comes to Bloodmoon Cove looking for work, but most of all to find a place to hide. Bloodmoon Cove Park Ranger John Kotter senses immediately that she has ghosts of her own. As a child, Esme was kidnapped and locked in a cold, dark basement. Afflicted with schizophrenia, her kidnapper alternately showed affection, then starved and brutalized Esme. Her only friends were rodents and the changeable terror that held her hostage. Only books enabled her to stay sane during those nightmare years. She's been on the run since her escape, never expecting to find another bound spirit come back to life.

Bound Spirits wooed me with well-drawn characters - not only John Kotter and Esmeralda, but also the supporting cast - John's mother, Troy Mulvaney and his friends, and the others. Bound Spirits reminded me of Stephen's King's Misery. In Misery, Annie Wilkes, a nurse also afflicted with a mental illness, locks injured protag Paul in his room, torturing him with starvation alternating with affection and unbridled fury. Now King's book is psychological horror, which includes a graphic description of the torture. Wiesner takes a subtle approach, allowing my imagination to supply the details, but she turns up the tension by adding a ghost. Not ghost. Ghosts, for Esme had to go up against the spirits of a man and his dog. These ghosts are seeking revenge on the family of the man who killed them and walled them in a cave. On one level, Esme can relate to these spirits, being a bound sprit herself, and Wiesner sells Esme's reaction in a way that I can believe.

King's story packs a heavy wallop with his protag's ordeal, but Wiesner tweaks up the tension yet again with portraying Esme after the fact. Esme comes to town afraid to trust, ready to run when anyone questions her. She didn't count on falling for John Kotter, a man who struggles with demons of his own. What's more, the people of Bloodmoon Cove have their own ideas on how people should live, something that doesn't sit well with John. The way he reacts to Esme is quite touching, and a sweet romance starts to blossom between them.

The suspense started from page one, with Troy and his friends visiting the cave, and kept me turning the pages. I believe this a great read that everyone would enjoy.
