Bloodmoon Cove Spirits Series: Bone of My Bone (Bloodmoon Cove Spirits Paranormal Romance) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

Nestled on Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin is a small, secluded town called Bloodmoon Cove with volatile weather, suspicious folk...and newly awakened ghosts.

Don't close your eyes...

How to bury what won't stay dead...?

When Bennet Ryan was eight years old, he met Ice and fell for her. Yet who Ice was and where she came from was an enigma she adamantly concealed. When they were 19, Bennet demanded she entrust her secrets to him or he'd move on. Every year since he met her, she'd disappeared at the end of September. After Bennet left her, he'd worried she wouldn't come back within two weeks the way she always had before. His worst fear materialized when she didn't return.

Now, at 20, Bennet is the new deputy sheriff in Erie County. Still grieving a year after her disappearance, he's floored when Ice reappears. As they fall in love all over again, September is approaching rapidly. Bennet is compelled to solve the mystery of Ice. The deeper he delves, the more certain he is that the hole the Mino-Miskwi elders tore in the veil between the living and the dead a century ago has created a maelstrom of twisted horror. How can he possibly save the woman he loves from an entity that wears the name of creation's first murderer, bears an immortal seal, and made a pact with the devil himself?

This novel stands alone fine without readers needing to be familiar with the setting or related stories. I always enjoy characters with alien-ish backgrounds who discover their true potential only gradually. I like the scene where Ice communicates with / is back with her mother while unconscious. Not only does it supply useful information, it draws out the final sequence to enhance suspense but without frenetic nonstop action. Additionally, Ice's telepathic conversation with her mother enhances the picture of their relationship as well as foreshadowing their mental union in the climactic battle and also foreshadows the extent of Ice's power. The final battle effectively portrays the powerful force she has to invoke to defeat the monster -- it's not an easy wave of the hand thing -- and makes clear the gravity of her choice, with a very real feeling that she could choose to be something no longer human. (Of course, the reader knows that almost certainly won't happen, but in the moment it feels like an imminent possibility.) The mystery of Ice is captivating, and the major elements hold together very well in this story.

When Bennet Ryan was eight years old and living miles away from the nearest neighbor, he came upon another eight years old hiding beneath a window of his home. Her name was Ice. Who she was and where she came from was unknown. Ice refused to say. Bennet fell in love with Ice, and she returned the affection. Yet at the age of nineteen, when Bennet is leaving to attend the police academy, Ice insists that she cannot go with him. Every September, Ice disappeared to some unknown place and reappeared a couple of weeks later. Bennet saw Ice's refusal to go with to the city as a betrayal. It never fully crossed his mind that the evil lurking within Devil's Forest was holding Ice back. Bennet leaves Ice at his family home and goes to begin his training. That is when his worst fear comes true. Ice left in September but did not return two weeks later.

Twenty-year-old Bennet is the new deputy sheriff in Erie County. It has been a year since Ice's disappearance. Bennet and his family had searched for Ice the entire time. No stone was left unturned. It is a shock when Ice suddenly shows up. Ice tells Bennet everything. Every horrifying part of her hidden life. Bennet, his family, Sheriff Gray and a few others delve into the mystery surrounding Ice. Instead of believing Ice was insane, the group begins making plans on how to end the evil within Ice's life. Having lived so long in Bloodmoon Cove, everyone in the group understands that the area, nestled on Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin, has a long, dark history of supernatural events. This time, the evil could be traced back to Cain, the first murderer.

***** FIVE STARS! I would be remiss if I did not give the following warning: This is a dark story. Though not told in great detail, there are scenes of babies and dogs being harmed. You have been warned.

Though this is the seventh novel of the series, this story stands alone. So, all of you who are new to the series, feel free to dive in headfirst. The first half of the novel is "a bit" dark and sets up the tale for the second half, which I would call "murky." Not pitch black, but ... well, it is difficult to explain. You will understand after you read the story.

Wiesner managed to send a chill up my spine not once, but twice. That does not happen often. It is testament to how potent the poison is on the tip of her pen. *****

BONE OF MY BONE is the 7th book in Karen Wiesner’s Bloodmoon Cove Spirits Series. What a spooky novel. I just loved it! My heart went out to the little girl who eventually named herself Ice. I could see Bennet’s love for her even from the start. This story had me fretting from moment to moment about what would happen. I can hardly wait to read the next in the series!”
