- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseUpstate was such a great story that I was a little worried about how it would go into the next phase. Happily it did not disappoint. Hal and John continue to crack wise, plan wise, and...well, no spoilers, eh?
He introduces new quirky characters that you connect to quickly and just about every character, even the minor ones, have a vivid backstory that helps you buy in to the narrative.
If you read the first book, you'll love the second one. If you haven't read the first book, do yourself a favor and get on that!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2022Format: KindleI’ve been looking forward to finding out where the Blue Files series
would take me next, and this second book did not disappoint. Over the
course of the two books, Painz’s writing style has really grown on me,
so I was happy to be back in his world.
The book itself is every bit as entertaining as the first one, Blue,
Upstate, and the story follows another interesting path with more
mystery thrown in. The only thing I didn’t understand was how the
prologue ties in. I can only assume it’s going to be revealed in the
next book, but it was a little disappointing when I got to the end and
the tie-in wasn’t there. The rest of it is so good though that I can
wait to find out, so no stars removed for that.
Blue, Too sees John and Jesse get out of Dodge, so to speak, as they
make their way to New Orleans. There we find out that Hal has kept John
in the dark about his southern business dealings. It kind of puts John
on a ‘need to know’ status, and he goes through a variety of scenarios
as he plays catch-up. New characters are introduced. New criminals
create new dilemmas. Through it all, Painz keeps the story fresh and
exciting.
Another fast-paced, highly entertaining read that I finished in far less
time than I thought I would because I couldn’t put it down.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseJohn Painz knocked it out of the park again with Blue, Too, which picks up exactly where Blue, Upstate left off, but this time we head to New Orleans. I’m very familiar with the city, and Painz does a great job of tapping into the quirks of the culture that can be found nowhere else on earth. Like most cities, it also has a seedy underbelly, but it’s different because…well, New Orleans. He does an equally good job of understanding that things – law, politics, the criminals themselves – there operate outside of the criminal norm.
You get more of John and Jesse in Blue, Too and less of Hal and Carla, but as they move away from the NYC mob ring, more characters are introduced. It works out well with Hal and Carla checking in via phone from Upstate New York. The new characters and location lay the groundwork for a new mystery and more problems to solve.
The story itself quickly engages and entertains, maintaining that momentum throughout. Painz never ceases to amaze as he spins a web that gives you easy visuals and draws you into the emotions of the moment.
I do recommend reading Blue, Upstate first to familiarize yourself with the characters and the situation that sends them into the deep south.
I’m two books into what I believe is going to be a four-book series, and I’m already feeling sad that there only two books left. It’s one of THOSE stories with THAT kind of writing that makes you want it to go on forever.
Get it today. A page or two and you’ll be hooked!

4.0 out of 5 stars more twists and turns than a roller coaster
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe second instalment in this fast paced action series. More twists and turns than a rollercoaster, and the bodies pile up as the story unfolds. The clip ff hanger ending means I’m moving straight on to the next book to find out who dun it!
