- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2018This book was awesome. Well written, well paced, and all the feels.
It starts with seventeen-year-old Natalie, whose nickname is “Bluebird”, who is ready to break out of her small, country town and pursue a music career. Between her hot-and-cold boyfriend, lack of solid friendships, and a huge going-nowhere crush on her brother’s best friend, it’s not hard to understand why.
Her whole struggle brought me back to my teen years and I couldn’t help but shake my head at the blinders she had on about her boyfriend’s behavior, get annoyed at her fake “best friend”, and feel that familiar twist in my gut at the love she thought was unrequited.
Fast forward nine years, four albums, and countless gigs. Natalie’s life has circled back to a place she needs to escape from. This time it’s from a restrictive agent, who also happens to be her cheating ex, and a life she generally didn’t sign up for.
So, she heads home. To a second chance at finding peace, finding love, and ultimately finding herself. And what I love most about this story is that it’s not a simple, clean path. It’s a real, visceral struggle between all the things she desires out of life and how to reconcile them, and how to deal with the often-conflicting choices and actions of others, along with the crazy stuff life just throws at us.
I shed a few tears of sadness, happiness, and laughter. I grew attached to so many of the characters because they weren’t perfect, they were real. And there was a wonderful balance between things expected and unexpected. It also doesn’t hurt that I couldn’t have asked for a better ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2018As a country music fan living in Australia, Bluebird had me hooked from the very start. Natalie (nickname Bluebird) felt like she never really fit in. She was young and naive and loved her music, and was helped along by her brother’s best friend Luke. However when her world comes crashing down around her, she leaves all she knows to follow her dream - music.
Bluebird really captures the feelings you have when you are young. When you feel like your whole world is crumbling when you really have the world at your feet. You are so pulled in by the characters. They may frustrate you at times but that is because you care about them.
When Natalie returns to her home town after making it big in Nashville, you are again drawn into her world and you are never quite sure what decision she is going to make. Will she stay in the town where her world fell apart?
Ann Penny does a wonderful job of having you step into Natalie’s world. It’s a story that will make you laugh, cry, get frustrated, and have feelings of joy. To be able to convey such a range of emotions from the reader on a debut novel shows that Ann Penny is a clever author. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next one
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2019This is a first read for me by this author. I rarely get introduced to new authors and so was pleasantly surprised. While this book was slow at first it turned out pretty good. It was a second chance love story with a brothers best friend included. While it was nice in some parts, it really was a slow burn and it doesn't really get to the good stuff until 50% in. It lacked the true music feel because there was no actual lyrics and the charachters had the hardest time expressing themselves and running away seemed like the go to thing to do. I would like to give this author another read in the future as long as I can be hooked at least in the first few chapters.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2021Sooo.... I started this book this morning, and let me tell you - I finished it this afternoon, because I couldn’t put it down!
This is the debut novel of Ann Penny. But you wouldn’t know it’s her first book. Great writing style, a lot of chemistry between Blue and Luke. Some angst, some tears, joy, happiness, sexy scenes. All in all totally worth the 5 🌟!
The book starts in the past, when they were still teenagers. It tells you the story how it all started.
They were both secretly in love with each other, but Luke wanted to see her accomplish what she dreamed of. So he let her go.
After 9 years Blue came back home.
Do they come back together?! Has it been easy on them? Are they in different relationships?
Well, I’ll let you find out by yourself!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2018Natalie "Bluebird" is heading back to her hometown to get away from all the stress of her life. She's always had her music but even it seems to be letting her down. She meets up with her brother's best friend and her ex Luke. The two had a relationship that didn't work out and left Natalie broken hearted. I really loved these characters, the family relationships and the plot of this book was so good. I enjoyed this small town second chance romance.
I received a copy of this book via the author and am leaving a review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Country romance at its best!
I absolutely loved Ann Penny’s debut novel! I brought the pre-order after reading all the great ARC reviews.
It didn’t disappoint. I loved the build up and the sexual tension between the two main characters Natalie and Luke (Luke = new book boyfriend). Their love story is one told over many years, starting and ending in the country - as someone who grew up in the country, the country feel was spot on. It had other little details that get you more invested in the characters compared to other books, along with plenty of twists and turns to keep things interesting. A different reviewer said that her writing style reminds her of Colleen Hoover and I agree. This new author is a brilliant story teller and I can’t wait to read her next book!

Luke and Nat’s story pulls you in until you’re emotionally invested and can’t put it down. I’m left wanting to know more about the other characters, and hope to see Luke and Nat pop up in more stories.
