BODY! THEY BARKED: Laugh-out-loud adventures of a feisty seaside sleuth (Merry Summerfield Cozy Mysteries Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 162 ratings

I don’t often see expensive red-soled Christian Louboutin shoes in Drizzle Bay. And certainly not hanging out of a trash can on the end of long, slim legs. My latest pet-sitting charges are desperate for me to notice the grisly sight and are barking like crazy – pulling me straight into another murder mystery.

But who'd want well-dressed Coral Clappe dead? With an apparently loving family, money galore, and a bonus beach house, it seems she led a charmed life. But it’s not long before perfection starts splintering. Goodness – the things that woman got up to!

As a law-abiding book editor I have a writers’ workshop to run before I start seriously sleuthing. Come to the workshop with me. Everyone has a theory about the murder but only one person knows the truth. (One person and maybe two huge German Shepherds.)

Detective Bruce Carver is hot on the trail, and this time he has a hunky new off-sider from Boston, Massachusetts. But I found the body so I’d love to find the culprit, too.

This fun cozy mystery is full of your favorite people from the other books in the series. Plus a puzzling murder, a touch of romance, and laugh-out-loud lines. Be happy – Merry is here again!

Hello! Thank you so much for visiting my Amazon author page. You might already know me as Kris Pearson, author of steamy romances. But I see you've discovered my life of crime...

Yes, my other side is cozy mysteries. Bodies, but no gory scenes. Quite a bit of flirting. And definitely laughs as you follow the clues my sleuth discovers as she accidentally bumps into bodies along the way. There's a prequel called DEAD IN A DECK CHAIR, and the first book in the series proper is MURDER IN THE ASLE. This is followed by XMAS MARKS THE SPOT. Then there's MURDER! THEY MEOWED and BODY! THEY BARKED. BURIED IN HIS BOOTS follows this, and there's a box-set of three to save you money. All in KU. I've just launched (for my birthday) THE KNIFE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, and I have more in the pipeline for sure.

I'm from New Zealand, and Drizzle Bay village doesn't QUITE exist. Let's say it's every small coastal settlement I've ever holidayed in or passed through on road-trips. Therefore, in my mind it's very real. So come with me and meet a cast of characters which grows with every book.

I love this series, and many mysteries remain to be developed and/or revealed in future books. The sudden, unexpected resolution in this one was a rush of active description. A few hints were given in previous chapters, but not enough to make the solution obvious. Which makes for a great mystery!

BODY! THEY BARKED is a standalone cozy mystery. In case you don't know, a cozy mystery is one that does have a dead body but it is not the thing of nightmares. Usually you don't know the dead person or you don't really mind that they were done away with. There are no sexy scenes or colorful language. This is a fun, crazy read and one any age can read and enjoy.

Once again Merry finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery. She has agreed to dog sit Ice and Fire for her friend. The two German Shepherds are not easily led around. They are usually in control unless Merry blows the magic whistle. That is of course if she can get it untangled from her bra strap. After walking the dogs on the beach Merry is returning to her new place of business. She is going to be teaching courses in writing. Only this morning something is terribly wrong when the dogs discover a trash can (for those of us in the USA) or bin if not, with a leg sticking out. She does check to see if she needs to call for an ambulance or the police. The ambulance won't be needed. It is too late for that. She recognizes the body.

The thoughts that go through Merry's head are enough to add laughs to the story. She has a good sense of humor and it comes forth as she works her way through things. The dogs do their thing as well. This is a fun, interesting, mystery that you really don't see the end coming. Lots of people could be the murderer as this woman did have a habit of making enemies. Even her kids are suspects. And rightly so, she did a number on them as well. If any woman deserved to be bottom up in the waste bin, this woman did. A good entertaining read. OH, and there is another potential love interest for Merry. A cop from Boston is on loan to the local police as he learns their ways of doing things. He is a good looking guy and has Vicar Paul a little on edge. I definitely recommend this read.

I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 2/23/2022

Erstwhile editor, Merry Summerfield is busy getting ready for a writers' workshop. She is cleaning out an empty storefront with the leads of the two German Shepherds she is dog-sitting fastened. After joining Vicar Paul in town, she walked the dogs on the beach. On her return she along with Fire and Ice (the dogs) find someone has been smoking in the store. The dogs dash out to the back door of the store, "Body, body, body!" they barked.

Merry goes out to investigate and sees female leg extending out of the rubbish bin. She goes to take a closer look. Oh, no, Merry can't have found a body in the rubbish bin. This is too much. She keeps finding bodies where there shouldn't be bodies. What rotten luck. The usual detective, DS Bruce Carver arrives to investigate this latest death - along with visiting Boston Homicide Detective Sean Manahan. A very attractive visitor. That gets her heart going along with her feelings toward the vicar.

Plenty of good clues and false starts follow as Kristie Klewes continues to weave a delightful mystery along with romantic overtones. It is a great read set along the shores of New Zealand. I have really enjoyed the series and this was certainly a wonderful addition. You likely will enjoy reading it. The editing is superb. I received an advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review.

Poor Merry has found another body, and what a gruesome find it is this time. Who would have thought that a small seaside village would produce such intriguing mysteries? Life in Drizzle Bay is throwing all manner of curveballs and temptations in Merry’s path, and the delectable Sean Manahan is just the latest temptation.
I’m looking forward to the next visit to Drizzle Bay and the ongoing sagas in the lives and loves of its residents.
