Finding Your Deep Soul: Guidance for Authentic Living Through Shamanic Practices (Therapeutic Shamanism) Paperback – October 14, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Modern-day society is not designed to help us find our Soul. Instead, we have lost our way and lead domesticated and tamed lives, cut off both from our own true nature and from the natural world too. These days, the sad truth is that most people live and die without knowing who they really are, never knowing the magnificent being that Mother Earth intended them to be.
This was not always the case. In recovering the wisdom and knowledge of our hunter-gatherer shamanic ancestors, we can remember what we are meant to be. If we free ourselves from the distorted stories that our culture tells us, we discover that our true nature is something that is altogether more beautiful and profound than we have been led to believe. We remember how to live in right-relationship with ourselves, with each other as humans, and with the more-than-human world too. For our shamanic and animist ancestors knew that healthy humans are not separate or superior to nature, but a part of nature. They knew that the world is alive and conscious, full of intelligent and sentient beings with gifts of healing and wisdom for us. They knew that we belonged, a part of a living and greater whole.
Drawing on both ancient shamanic wisdom and knowledge from modern-day psychotherapy, and with easy-to-follow, practical and effective exercises, this book helps you wake up and free yourself from the illusions that we live under. It guides you step-by-step along the path of finding your authentic Soul – the grounded, embodied and inter-connected being that you were born to be. It helps you come home to your Soul.
[This book is the third in the ‘Therapeutic Shamanism’ series. It is not necessary to have read the other books in the series first. However, this book does assume prior knowledge of the shamanic realms, and the ability to do shamanic journeys for yourself.]
Praise for “The Shamanic Journey” and “Rewilding Yourself”, the first two books in this series: “Intelligent, beautifully written, thoughtful, thought-provoking, and deeply engaging”, “A beautifully crafted book”, “Accessible and practical”, “Warm, grounded and encouraging”, “A welcome, no-nonsense guide…fascinating and highly usable”, “A breath of fresh air”, “Written with humour, honesty and great awareness”, “Clear, ethical and authentic.”, “Deeply knowledgeable”, “An indispensable guide”, “An instant classic”, “The best voice in shamanism today!”.

About the author

I am a shamanic practitioner, teacher, writer, and founder of the Three Ravens College of Therapeutic Shamanism.
I was born and grew up in the north of England. At the age of eighteen I went to university where I studied philosophy and anthropology, primarily studying tribal (shamanic) cultures. After graduating, I found there were not many jobs in that field! So, I worked for a few years in a hospital, teaching sign language, and in my spare time studied complementary medicine, various spiritual traditions, and psychotherapy. I set up in private practice as a complementary medical practitioner and psychotherapist in the early 1980s. Apart from a few years heading up a counselling department at a Further Education college, I have been self-employed as a therapist ever since. As well as one-to-one client work, I have also been a teacher, trainer, and supervisor for over thirty years.
I had several intense shamanic experiences in my early life, although at the time I did not know what to call them. At university, I was drawn to studying shamanic cultures, although at the time the word 'shamanism' was still not used that often in academic circles (at the time they were generally still referred to as 'primitive cultures').
I first consciously come across shamanism in my 20s, attending workshops that various teachers were running at the time. Although I found it interesting, I was also training as a psychotherapist at the same time, and I found the lack of ethics and abuse of power that I saw going on in the shamanic workshops to be disturbing. So, I gave up actively pursuing it (although with hindsight it never actually left me). In my 30s, a series of events completely took me apart mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and literally nearly killed me. It was during the slow process of emerging from that crisis that shamanism burst back into my awareness. Over the next few years of healing, shamanism felt like a very private part of my life; an intensely private practice just between me and my guides, and something I discussed with very few people. Although I was a teacher, the idea of teaching shamanism felt out of the question at that time, as shamanism felt like something that I would always only be a beginner at. Again, with hindsight, I certainly would have been nowhere near capable of teaching it, really teaching it, at the time. It was not until my early-forties that my guides started to nag me about teaching it. I resisted for years. My guides persisted, and quite reluctantly I began to weave bits of shamanic work into the other teaching that I was comfortable with. What astonished me was the way some people took to it and thirsted for more of it. Even so, it did take another near-death experience for me to finally give in, and stop being the reluctant teacher. These days I am filled daily with a deep gratitude (and still with some astonishment) that I can devote my life to practicing and teaching shamanism, and that people want to learn alongside me.
Otherwise, I lead a quiet life. A few years ago, my partner and I were fortunate enough to be able to move to North Wales, to live a life more in contact with nature. We are both introverts, and after teaching we need a lot of peace, solitude and nature to recharge. When not teaching, I spend most of my days writing, walking on the beach or in the hills, watching clouds and sunsets, gardening, cooking for my partner, holding her hand, reading, researching on the internet (there is so much I still want to learn and study!), thinking, feeling, occasionally wrestling inner demons (although not so much these days!), doing nothing in particular, talking to my guides, and gazing adoringly at my four beloved cats.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2025So good. Very grateful. Not sure what category this would be in if in a bookstore, but it should be in every category I think. Philosophy, spiritually, self help, history, science, travel.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2023Upon awakening I had no idea what to do with the energy available to me. So I feverishly began reading about the experience. The series by Paul Francis put much of my experience in line and helped to focus my energies and meditation practices. I await the next in the series.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2020This series of books is full of great ways to reconnect to Mother Earth, our True Guides, and Power Animals. It reminds us why we are in the mess we are in and how to change it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2022I’m a huge fan of Paul Francis’ work in therapeutic shamanism and believe it provides a lot of value in healing. I’ve purchased all of his books so far. I can see he’s put a lot of heart and soul into his work. However one thing of note that he can improve on in this an all of his books is that he tends to over romanticise Hunter gatherer tribes and over demonizes modern civilizations. He shames then in his book and calls them “the Taker Cult.” No exactly a neutral standpoint. My belief is that although many of his points have truth in it, shaming and demonizing (the way he describes Hunter gatherer tribes in how they stop a bad person from coming to power)… but the truth is, that’s why we have all this division in the world today. The side that one does not agree with is demonized and shamed rather than heard and being looked at objectively. In human development, animistic tribes always developed into more agrarian ones, then came organized religion, then free enterprise, then a more socialistic bent… it’s normal human development and every stage is needed and it is the limitations of each stage that push humanity to grow. Vilifying a stage is not helpful but it is a solid characteristic of stage green, a socialistic stage that glorifies animistic cultures and hates heirarchy. However once those limitations are passed, one can then see the entire spiral of human development and how beautiful they all are. This book would have gotten a 5 star if the author had a more neutral or constructive stance on modern cultures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I don't tend to leave reviews for books, but felt that I wanted to say a few words here about the three books (so far) in this series by Paul Francis. I have never met Paul, never had any contact with him at all and didn't know anything about him until I purchased these three books.
I do however have an interest in various spiritual practices and Shamanism is one of them. I have studied shamanism and been fortunate to have been a part of several retreats and workshops and met a number of people engaged in the UK Shamanic “community”. I have also read and studied many books from many authors but above all, I follow my own personal path and thus have my own direct experiences.
At the moment I have only just got the three books in this series, so I am writing this short review as a warm up and will post it for each of the three books. This is thus just a first impression and I will endeavour to come back and edit each review with specifics for each book at a later stage.
So, I am absolutely delighted with these books! I brought them on a whim, as they kind of presented themselves to me (either the spirit was working or its Amazons algorithms...one of the two!). The content looks absolutely fabulous and the bits I have read are well written and quite clearly these are going to build into a really extensive library of shamanic practice.
...I hope Paul reads this and therefore is encouraged to keep going with some of the other titles he has suggested that could be following. There are some very interesting topics lined up for future volumes.
This is a good general background and yet also a good depths of work here for you to explore and develop your own work. As I say, this is just a quick post at the moment to just make sure that some positive energy is being brought forward in these books.
Oh, I love the way they are designed and printed too (nice covers and a slightly off white paper which is really very nice).
So….first impressions here are that these are terrific and a super way of appreciating and discovering how to bring Shamanic work into your own life. These are not great historical tomes and not new age BS, these are the real deal of applying this work into your life today.
OK...I will be back with a proper review of each book soon.
Until then, thank you Paul wherever you are (Llandudno I think it says in the blurb!). Hope you are writing away and getting the next one lined up as I will be going through these and look forward to any others that you produce.
To everyone else….just buy the lot !

It’s a life change book, because teaches shamanism in a easy and safety way. You learn to meet your true self. A must read for who is interested in the subject. 5.0 out of 5 stars Only one frustration
I have just finished Volume 3 of Paul Francis' series and, at the time of writing, there are no others to read; that is my frustration! At the end of the book, Paul gives a list of the "Hundreds" of other completely fascinatingly titled volumes he is intending on writing - but this is going to take him YEARS (and when I say years, I mean half-centuries). Otherwise, Paul's approach to shamanism fits me totally: he is deep, methodical, rooted, and analytical. Personally, his are the only Western books on shamanism that I totally connect to. But... I want (all) the next volumes!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Starting feeling fully connected to my self
This book supported me in seeing and understanding what a Soul is and to connect and learning about mine. With years of meditation I always got close, but was never able to touch it. Finally after slowly (taking my own time for it) going trough all the exercises in this book I start to access the creativity that I was longing for, for my all life. Thank you!
