Borrowing Trouble (Pig & Barley Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 128 ratings

Lust or love? Can Marisa even tell the difference?

Juggling a new boyfriend who is constantly MIA for work, his mom who likes her just a little too much, a best friend whose husband might be sneaking around, and a busy career saving clients from sexual harassment lawsuits is pulling Marisa Tanner apart at the seams.

Being with Trip is good, but is it real? Will he bail on her like her past boyfriends or for once in his life will Trip be able to maintain focus longer than the time it takes to close a business deal?

A follow-up to Risking Ruin, Borrowing Trouble maintains Mae Wood’s distinctive style of smart and sexy chick lit.

About the Author

Mae Wood is a mommy, bookworm, and lawyer (in that order). A while ago Mae decided that she needed to give up the fear that she couldn't write "great literature" and write what she wants to read. And she want romance. And laughter. She wants heroines who are brave. Brave enough to be themselves and brave enough to fall in love. She wants men who are strong and kind. Mae lives in the Southeastern United States and sets her books in hot and steamy Memphis, Tennessee.

Mae Wood is my go-to author for sexy reading because she does sexy with a huge dose of intelligence and wit and emotion and that combo with the aplomb with which she pulls it off is a rare find indeed.

This is the second book in this series following neurotic loveable lawyer, Marisa, and her client come lover, Trip, who is hands down the absolute sexiest male protagonist ever. As in ever.

What I loved about the first book (Risking Ruin) and what made me pick up a second (when I don’t normally read series at all, I much prefer standalone novels) is that Wood instinctively knows what women want. We want a protagonist we can relate to, a woman we can picture ourselves being. One who is smart and strong and independent but who isn’t perfect, who has self-doubt, who can over analyse things, one who’s vulnerable. We want a man we can fall in love with and fantasise about, whose sexiness is as mental as it is physical and a man who wears his heart on his sleeve, one who loves unconditionally. We want real life situations and page turning plots that aren’t just boy-meets-girl formulaic but that give us storylines to sink our teeth into. We want sizzling sex. Don’t fade to black on us but don’t throw the sex in our faces incessantly either, give us the slow burn, the teasing - keep us longing for it. We want to feel things, we want to laugh and cry and be frustrated and angry and ultimately we want to be satisfied with the ending.

Wood listens to what women want and she delivers. Boy does she deliver.

This book broke my heart, made me want to jump my husband and had me laughing again and again. Bravo to this talented author.

I’ll be reading any damn thing Wood writes from now on, series or not.

3.5-4 stars. Borrowing Trouble picks up from where Risking Ruin ends. Now that Marisa and Trip are an official and publicly open couple, this seals the deal as far as how potentially serious they are. Although Marisa still isn't fooling herself into thinking Trip is thinking of a long term future, his mother seems to have that idea. And as Marisa and Trip share more of the deeper parts of themselves, it becomes apparent that even with Trip's constant absence from traveling, they have something worth keeping. Marisa is still the same from the previous book, always on guard with her doubts. What I do like about Marisa is how independent and strong willed she is, where she doesn't cave in to false expectations and is always realistic. Not to mention that she can handle things by herself without help. And I love how Trip is always wanting to prove to her that he is not going anywhere. I do like how they have to iron out the obstacles being two people who are very successful in their careers with busy schedules and must find a way to merge their lives together.

This book picks up right where we left off with Trip and Marisa. As Trip and Marisa are jetting off for some fun in the sun, Marisa's response to Trip's gesture doesn't feel right - and fireworks begin between these two characters. The two hash out some uncertainty both felt and then connect while vacationing at the family home. They come back to Memphis after a few days and start fighting the case that brought them together. What happens in this book is a great story - completely pulling the reader into the Pig & Barley world.

This is the second Pig & Barley book - and you truly fall in love with these characters. There are a few other characters that you want to know more about - and the author has taken a great deal of time to develop the characters. These are adults -- not young love -- and the storylines are events that happen in real life. Mae's second effort in the book world does not disappoint!

I really enjoyed Risking Ruin and Borrowing Trouble is a great conclusion to Marisa and Trip's story.

Marisa and Trip behave like mature adults and mostly don't play games. Marisa ventures a little into the territory of heroines who get in the way of their own happiness, but it doesn't last too long. When Trip confronts her about her behavior she reflects on it and changes her attitude--like a mature adult. They resolve their conflicts in a similar manner. It is proof that you can have drama and tension without artificial angst.

Frequently a characters career is merely an abstract part of their bio that doesn't impact their lives. Marisa and Trip's careers are actual real jobs that get in the way of their love lives help advance the plot and emotional development.

    ****SPOILER ALERT****
I was very happy to read at the end that Bert is getting his own book. I felt from the time I met him during Risking Ruin that he had a story to tell. I look forward to reading it.

My first thought when I finished Mae Wood's Risking Ruin (Book 1 of the Give Me Memphis Series) is that I wanted more Marisa and Trip and Borrowing Trouble is the perfect follow up! I love that it picks up right where Risking Ruin left off and delves into the challenges of making a relationship work. Mae Wood does an excellent job of creating genuine characters, which allows the reader to become invested in their lives. I enjoy the secondary characters (Erica, Bert, etc.) as much as I do the main characters! Romance novels are not my typical choice, but the Give Me Memphis Series has more depth than what I would consider a "bodice ripper", making it the ideal book for an evening of pleasure reading!

    Loved this!
Picked this up straight after book one as I had to see how Trip & Marisa's story played out.
Loved the humour and appreciated the realistic approach to how Marisa dealt with her career and the problems a relationship with Trip ( her client) could cause.
