A Very Bossy Christmas
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
What's the actual last thing you'd ever want your executive assistant to see you doing the morning after you had hot, drunk, angry sex with her in a terrible hotel room? Dancing around your terrible hotel room to "Come and Get Your Love" like Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy - naked? Yeah. Me too.
And yet, here we are.
This isn't even the most unprofessional thing that's happened between us in the past couple of weeks.
The first was when I agreed to let her have Christmas Day off, but only if she goes with me to three family gatherings as my fake girlfriend.
The second was when she caught me belting out a Christmas song on stage in the awful hotel bar.
The third was the hot, drunk, angry sex that followed, but I do not regret it.
And she hasn't even found out the real reason I need her by my side this holiday season.
I need to pull it together before I do the dumbest, most unprofessional thing of all - fall head over heels in love with the only assistant who's lasted more than a month at the job and claims to hate me and my moods more than she hates eggnog.
And I've seen how much she hates eggnog.
This audiobook is dual narration, with portions that are duet-style.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2020Over the course of this year I have come to discover that reading a Kayley Lorring novel will result in abdominal pain.
That’s from the laughter.
I’ve also discovered that I have a bad habit of reading Ms. Lorring’s novels while the rest of my family watches epic adventure movies or tear rendering drama. Thus leaving me laughing uproariously at exactly the wrong moment. I understand that this is a “me” problem, however I find that it adds to my reading pleasure.
If you are a new reader to Ms. Lorring, I would highly recommend this novel as your first read. All of Ms. Lorring’s works have lovable characters, witty and fast dialogue, well developed plot along with amusing and engaging side characters, however I feel A Very Bossy Christmas is the best she’s written to date.
Declan Cannavale and Maddie Cooper are our couple de jour in A Very Bossy Christmas. Declan is a slick New York real estate lawyer trembling in fear of his mother’s wrath and falling from “favorite brother” status on his sister’s list.
Maddie Cooper is a Satan Island and downtown NYC girl who is taking names and keeping Declan in control.
As Ms. Lorring describes Maddie through Declan’s eyes:
The woman who keeps my schedule running smoothly and handles me with the sleek, unruffled grace of a highly skilled assassin.
Declan is trying to avoid going home for the holidays - Thanksgiving and Christmas.
At any and all cost.
There is a back story regarding his brother getting married, however Ms. Lorring dishes that amazing dish out slowly.
When Declan realizes that he can’t wriggle out from under his mother’s highly skilled Irish mammy guilt, he then comes up with a fool proof plan.
One that includes Maddie. Some legal papers. And a LOT of booze.
Declan drafts an agreement asking Maddie for the following:
You are asking me to acknowledge this discreet, temporary, simulated consensual romantic relationship during nonworking hours will not interfere with Sentinel’s company policy of teamwork
That’s right - Declan presents Maddie with a legal agreement to become his fake girlfriend.
The lure he holds over her head - allowing her the time off over Christmas that she had requested.
Maddie, signs on the dotted line. Crazy - right?
What then ensures is a non stop slide into outrageous family situations featuring Maddie’s sister, a teen niece who starts writing a fan fiction story about Declan and Maddie (#TeamMaclan) when not stealing Maddie’s phone to text Declan, a Staten Island aunt and that’s just Maddie’s family!!
Declan’s family takes us on a booze filled joy ride of the Boston cousins and the Irish cousins culminating in all of the cousins losing many many days, Declan sending nearly incoherent texts to Maddie, and a wedding.
Right. THAT wedding. The wedding of Declan’s brother to..... a woman that I refuse to name. (Yeah. I’d blow a raspberry at me too)
In between all of this, there are sweet moments such as Declan looking out for Maddie’s widowed landlord, an office Christmas party from the great beyond, sexy times that always start with “we are NOT having sexy times” dialogue, and Declan falling in love with Maddie. Or the other way around. By the end of the story they wind up married.
One of the biggest things that made me laugh were all the spot on accents. From the different New York ones, to Boston’s Southie, to the Irish. The tempo, tone, slang and dialogue were absolutely on point! I’ve grown up sandwiched between “the city” and Boston. I could clearly hear those accents as I read.
Now that I’ve gone on too long, I am recommending this book as THE Christmas book for 2020. It is the book your heart and soul need.
Just, don’t read it while watching “It’s a Wonderful Life”
You may find yourself in a room of family bent over cry laughing while George is out being all maudlin and soul crushing.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2023DECLAN: Babe. You need to come back immediately. MADDIE: <woman facepalming emoji> Dec. I literally just got in the car. What’s wrong? DECLAN: She won’t stop staring at me. MADDIE: Well, you’re her daddy. She probably can’t believe how handsome you are. Also, babies can only see things that are 8 to 12 inches from their faces. If you’re looking at her in the crib, then you’re probably just a big handsome blur to her. DECLAN: But she’s not blinking. MADDIE: Pretty sure that’s normal, babe. Newborns only blink like twice a minute. DECLAN: Are you sure? What if she’s scared of me? I think you should come back. MADDIE: Babe. I have loved being at home with the two of you all week, but I need to get out of the house for like half an hour. I’m just going to pop over to see Bex and everyone at her place for a few minutes. You’ll both be fine. Just let her go to sleep. DECLAN: I can’t stop staring at her though. She’s so beautiful. And I don’t want her to think she’s alone. MADDIE: Well, why don’t you tell her how you feel? You’re so good at that now, remember? DECLAN: I just told her you guys are the most important people in the world to me, and she rolled her eyes. Wonder where she learned THAT? DECLAN: Oh wait! She just blinked. She’s fine. It’s cool. MADDIE: See?! All is well. I’m gonna start driving now. I’ll be back in half an hour. One hour, tops. DECLAN: Be back in half an hour. MADDIE: <face with rolling eyes emoji> Bossy! DECLAN: I think we both know who’s the boss in this family now, and she just pooped her pants. And now she’s crying. Perhaps you can hear her from the car, because holy shit she is screaming. Please just come back now. MADDIE: I showed you how to change her diaper, Big Daddy. You got this. Sing Ciara a song and give her a kiss for me. I love you. DECLAN: I love you, Mrs. Cannavale. Miss you already. MADDIE: Make sure the baby goes back to sleep. And be naked when I get back.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2022OMGoodness! I’d been wanting to read this one for quite a while. With Valentine’s Day coming, I also wanted to read book 2 (A Very Friendly Valentine’s Day), so it kinda pushed me to read this one first. I didn’t have to, but I wanted to.
And I’m so glad I did!!!! I loved it SO MUCH!!
I had heard so many good things about this book, about this author. And I can now say, it’s all true!!
I really loved the writing, I felt like I was watching a movie. I adored the characters, I felt connected to them and fell hard for them. Declan and Maddie were the perfect mix of witty, charming, sexy, and fun.
This entire story was highly enjoyable for me. I’m pretty sure I smiled big throughout most of it. It was exactly what I hoped it would be, and exactly what I wanted and needed.
The snark, the sass, the sexy times. The banter, the tension, the subtle hints and comments. I loved it! All of it!! Did I snort-giggle a few times? More than likely.
It’s so obvious Declan and Maddie wanted each other. I just wanted to grab them and shove them together and make them kiss it out. They gave each other a hard time, but deep down, there is a lot of sizzle and spark, and so much love and attraction and admiration.
Declan comes off as gruff and rude and grumpy, but really, he’s a big ol’ softie! And she is his assistant who doesn’t put up with his cr@p. She’s smart, she’s competent, and she knows how to handle everything that comes her way. Even Declan’s demands. These two were perfect together. And cute.
It was heartwarming to see all of Declan’s grumpy outer layers start peeling away during the story. To see inside his brain, see what was really in his heart. In the end, he was just a man, who was so in love with a woman, and wanting her to love him back. Oh the feels…they were strong with this story.
And his family! Loved them’ It’s one of those families who steal a little piece of your heart. And you want to be a part of that family. And you miss them when the story’s over.
This was my first read from this author and I’m happy to say I am now a fan. BIG FAN.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and wonderful!
This book was recommended by a friend and I am so glad I read it! Started laughing from pretty much the beginning. Loved the main characters and every weirdo thrown into the mix (family, office etc) but my favourite character might be the witty, perceptive & meddling 13 year old Piper (sensational! :D)
I was surprised when I shed a few tears for the hero at his backstory but its very nicely handled, & especially the way he makes his peace with it. This is a crazy fun Christmas read & I highly recommend it for the non stop laughter (And of course the romance! :))

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
Fantastic easy steamy read! Set around the festive period but not overly xmas-y. Liked: both of our mc's are super likeable, Maddie is sassy and keeps him in line, Declan is plenty alpha but inside is an absolute Marshmallow 🥰. The banter between them was fab and I loved the text convos. The sex scenes where well written and spaced out with the narrative nicely. Secondary characters mostly all likeable and a satisfying HEA with an epilogue that peeks into their future which I love.
Dislike: the whole story of the ex girlfriend with his brother. Hated it. I'm sorry but if the brother was as close to Declan as described there's no way he would be lusting after his girlfriend for 9 years!! And vice versa, she wouldn't have stayed with dec for that long if she wanted a different freaking brother. No way would the family be OK with it either. And marrying the other brother 6 months later, seriously? The joke about her screaming Declans name when having sex with the bro......bleurgh!!! No man on the planet would be OK with even thinking that! I avoid all sibling ex stories because the ick factor is so gross that I just can't! So I really hated that whole part of this story. BUT that being said I thoroughly enjoyed this book and if you can overlook that bit then have at it. First book by this author but won't be the last and will be reading the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sexy, Laugh-Out-Loud Christmas Romance
I’ve never read anything from Kayley Loring, but A Very Bossy Christmas was added to the top of my holiday reading list after seeing such great reviews! And oh my—It absolutely delivered.
Declan, a successful real estate lawyer, is a workaholic that can only be tolerated by one assistant: Maddie Cooper. Intelligent, beautiful, and unfazed by the moody, demanding attitude of her boss, Maddie is a fiery heroine that didn’t hold back her mind. The banter between these two was hilarious and oozed sexual tension.
Needing a date for the holiday season to keep his mother content, the two agree upon a fake dating arrangement, complete with a signed agreement that it won’t disturb their working relationship. As their attraction boils over, barriers are crossed and it was such an explosion of built up emotions (and VERY hot!).
Declan, being Irish-Italian, brought a lot of humour in the form of his family. From food comas, velour track pants, and an epic bachelor party filled with drunk apologies, there were so many laugh-out-loud moments. Add in Maddie’s equally comical Staten Island crew, this had such a strong, authentic feel of family and completely gave me those cozy, Christmas vibes.
If you’re looking for a hilarious, steamy delight this holiday season, you need to pick this one up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome read!!
I love, love, loved this book!!! I loved the FMC. Such a refreshing character compared to some of the FMC’S I’ve read lately. Enjoyed the fake dating trope - it’s not always my fave but when done right, it’s so enjoyable and this was done right! I also don’t love the third act break up but this was done well and not too angsty or drawn out, just right. I adored Dec and his family, as well as Maddie’s family. I loved how well the author wrote out the accents and I couldn’t stop giggling. This book had me smiling and laughing and swooning. Is it weird I want to read Hannah and Brady’s story? And of course Eddie and Byrdie!
