Boy Under Water: Dennis Nilsen: The Story of a Serial Killer Paperback – May 15, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
A civil servant.
A serial killer.
In 1954, Dennis Nilsen is 9 years old. He is almost swept out to sea, where he thinks he imagines his dead grandfather reaching out to him. Instead, he wakes up later on the shore, completely naked and covered in a sticky, white substance. The combination of death and sex in the growing boy’s mind grows stronger at every turn. His fantasy life begins to quickly spiral out of control through adolescence and early adulthood. By the time he is in his 20s, he is regularly masturbating to the image of a dead or unconscious body in his mind; using a mirror, he is able to pretend that the dead body is his own.
In 1983, Dennis Nilsen is 38 years old. He is arrested for the murders of 15 young men, six of which he is convicted for. Boy Under Water leads us through a true crime account between these two moments in his life. Nilsen is called the Muswell Hill Murderer, the Kindly Killer, and the Monochrome Man. Boy Under Water takes us on that journey to discover the nuances and psychological challenges that lead him to murder for the first time, and then to make it a habit, discovering the man behind the sensationalised names.
Through each London murder victim, and through the men that got away from his murderous attempts, we see a building frustration that Nilsen cannot let go of. Whenever his emotions spiral out of control, a body ends up on the floor of his flat in the morning. Each of the twelve recognised victims is explored in depth, along with additional moments from his life that build up his personality. Most shocking of all, perhaps, is his ability to compartmentalise his life to be a murderer at home and a cheerful civil service worker by day.
If you're a true crime addict, you'll be hooked on this account of a London serial killer and his real life murders!

About the author

My name is Rhiannon D'Averc, and I'm an author and ghostwriter based in the UK. To date, I've had over 100 books published. I live in Kent with my husband and son and also keep myself busy as the Editor in Chief of London Runway, an indie fashion magazine.
Serial Investigations follows a pair of private detectives, best friends and sharp minds harbouring a dark secret that is slowly destroying each of them from the inside. It's an extreme slow-burn romance with serial killings, references to real crimes, and the city of London as a central location.
Crowhill Cove is a gay romance series following a group of friends as they find love in unexpected places. Series 2 is coming in the late 2024! Find Crowhill Cove on Substack for extra content including short stories and a seralised novel.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2018Not you're run of the mill true crime. Short but very well written. If you want great insight into the killer's mind without the usual psychoanalyzing I'd highly suggest this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2020What a macabre and sad story. There is no telling what makes a person tick but to have a mind so twisted and bent is undeniably tragic. It saddens your heart for the loss of so many lives that you never know what they could have become or what they left behind.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2020This book is crazy. When you hear how this serial killer went about life and committed his crimes an got away with it for as long as he did. Especially when some of the victims escaped and returned with the cops is just insane.-Enjoy

- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2020I thought this was an interesting read about someone I hadn't heard of before. I felt like this did a good job of keeping my attention and not boring me throughout the whole book.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2019Just okay for me. Reading became rather dull and repetitive (no pun intended) and the few insights provided into the mind of the killer were superficial.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nielsen the killer fictionalized
This is a pretty good book which is told in the third person from Nilsen's point of view although it is obviously part fictionalized. It very much tells the story of the crimes including the ones who got away. But at the same time it tries to give some perspective of what made Nilsen tick. I read Killing for Company when it came out in the 80s, that was good too, but this is a alternative reads covering largely the same ground.
