Breaking Free: Una Familia Segura Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 204 ratings

Anna Rosa Castillo is unlike most 16 year old girls.

She doesn't care for clothes or make up, nor does she giggle with her friends about hot guys. Coming from a small town in the North of England, where drugs and criminals are at the top of the food chain, Anna’s life is an impossible mixture of pain and sorrow. Drawing and tattoos are her only way of escaping the tortures that consume her at home. She lives by only one rule – do whatever he says, and she might live long enough to get away.
All that changes when a fatal night lands the monster of her nightmares in a prison cell and herself in a hospital bed, staring into the eyes of a father she has never known.

The addition of a father and family turns Anna’s life upside-down, thrusting her into a world she could never understand. Inner demons and unspeakable memories claw at her as she tries to build a relationship with her new family. But with her past looming over her new life, will she be able to break free?

A secure home and family life, a blessing not enjoyed by everyone,

is taken for granted by the majority of people who do have it.

Particularly in our adolescent years, most of us seldom consider how

fortunate we are to have parents (or a parent), who cares about us and

gives us the best life they are able to provide. Anna, the main

character in Breaking Free, a Young Adult novel by Annie Hughes, is not

a fortunate child, economically or emotionally.

Anna Rosa Castillo does not have a loving home or parent for the

first sixteen years of her life. She is strong, intelligent, talented,

and determined to eventually escape the material deprivation and

shocking physical abuse she experiences while living with her Spanish

immigrant mother in northern England. Anna finds creative escapes in

her prolific drawing and the tatoos she has etched onto her skin like

    an illustrated suit of armor.

The life Anna has endured takes a radical turn for the better due

to ironic circumstances at the beginning of the book. She is in the

hospital with broken ribs and assorted minor injuries. Her mother was

killed by the man who is responsible for Anna's bruised and battered

condition. He is now in custody while awaiting trial for his crimes,

and Anna is facing placement in the foster care system. To the

surprise of those involved, she is saved from that unappealing fate by

the appearance of her biological father, David Porter.

Mr. Porter is a highly successful American technology company

founder and C.E.O. He, his wife, and stepson welcome Anna into their

family and beautiful home in the affluent coastal town of

Kennebunkport, Maine. (For those of you who are not American,

Kennebunkport is the longtime vacation destination of the former U.S.

president George H. W. Bush family.)

After the difficulties Anna has experienced, it is not surprising

that she is hesitant to trust the Porters and wonders when this vastly

improved version of her life will abruptly end. She makes friends, and

enjoys the life of a well cared for teenager. There are a few difficult

adjustments on both sides, but Anna does come to feel secure in her new

life and family. Still, the trial of her mother's killer and her abuser

    awaits.

Breaking Free is the first book in a series following Anna's life.

Annie Hughes has created sympathetic and believeable characters who

face their problems with the help of friends and family. There is no

graphic or detailed violence, but there are mature themes, including

child sexual abuse, so potential readers need to consider whether it is

appropriate for themselves or their children to read. I believe that

this book, and the sequel, which will be published on July 17, are more

    than worth reading.

This is the second book I've read with a fabulous book group, and I cannot give enough praise to the way it adds to my connection with a book. At times it is hard to limit myself to the chapter or two a day, but it is so worth it for the section by section dissection with fellow readers.

Kudos to Annie on a fabulous debut! The emotional roller coaster is intoxicating. This is the story of Anna, anything but your typical teenage girl. There is definitely a Cinderella-esque theme, but few literary characters deserve it as much as this girl. As Anna's backstory unfolds as she bonds with her new found family, you will definitely find yourself gasping and possibly reaching for a tissue or two. I feel Annie did a fantastic job of portraying Anna in a realistic way for someone who has been through such traumas.

Written for a YA audience, and the sexual and violent content are implied more than explicit, but I will still keep my recommendation to the older and more mature end of the YA spectrum. As a mother of teenagers, I viewed this book from a much different perspective than the target audience, but found it quite moving regardless. As another review has mentioned, I did question some of the parenting choices, which is why I added the older addendum to my recommendation.

Overall a very satisfying debut and I will definitely be watching for more to come from this sure to be up and coming author.

I just finished this book and I have to say this is a stellar novel from a exceptionally talented young writer. There have been many reviews written already dealing with the story and characters, which are top-notch, but as a writer, I'd like to raise a few additional points.

The prose here is very tight, there is no waste. There are descriptive sections which set the scene and enough is given without the feeling you're having to wade through a lot of adjectives. Every word has a purpose and the pacing of the action is very controlled. There are no lagging points or rushed sequences. The characters are well-drawn and the dialogue is natural and fresh, funny and heart-felt when it needs to be. There really are no sour notes here, just a wonderful written, well-paced story with thought-out action and dialogue. Its so exciting to see this amazing output and I will certainly be reading her next in this series as well as any future stories. It will be a definite treat to follow this burgeoning talent throughout her career.

That this is Annie Hughes' first book is in itself amazing. She has created characters that are alive and you want to know more about them when the book ends. I read the first 7 chapters in the sample provided by Amazon and then bought the book. It was so convincing and had so many turns that I was always riveted. A scared young girl is in a hospital bed and is introduced to her father for the first time and is told that she was going to the states to stay until her step-fathers trial for killing her mother and almost killing her. She meets so many people and they all seem to like her. She can't get over the fact that her Dad, Step-Brother and her Step Mother Love her. And she faces fear, abuse and murder to come into her new life. All I can say is read it you won't want to put it down

I read this book as it was a recommendation on Amazon so thought I would give it a go. It’s not usually they type of book I read but have been in a book slump lately so thought the change would be good. I thought it was very well written and nice to have a happy ending for a well deserved character.

Breaking Free: Una Familia Segura (Breaking Free #1)
    by Annie Hughes

Anna Rosa Castillo has been through so much in her first 16 years of life but that is all about to change when her biological father turns up at her hospital bedside and wants her to return to America with him and his wife Mel and her son Logan. Anna has to adjust from having nothing to having everything she can desire.... That doesn't erase her past from her life!

I bought this book not knowing what it was about but because a friend had said it was really good and I loved, loved this book and from the very moment I started it to the very end and even now I am writing my review I feel like this is one of the best books I have EVER read.

The characters had me from the very start and I really felt that I connected with them, I really did not want this book to end. It is a very emotional read and very well written covering some really sensitive subjects.

I cried a lot in this emotional read it wasn't until after that I broke down sobbing.

I am so very excited to see that there will be a second book in this series and I cant wait to read it...

I will give this book 5 stars for Amazon & 5 stars for Goodreads (I do think it deserves 6 stars)

This is a different type of book that I'm used to reading.

Normally shifter, PIC of reverse heram stories.
The author came up on my recommend books and I thought why not.

I'm so pleased I have her a try!
It does have triggers in it, but you fall in love with Anna as her bravery and confidence grow.
Having Logan as a popular and loveable brother made me want to hug him.

    This is worth reading
