Charlotte's Challenge (Golden Legacy) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 40 ratings

Bret Craig is a wealthy descendant of one of the crew of The Golden Fleece. Over a century ago the merchant ship had prevailed against pirates carrying a treasure of cursed Inca gold. The legacy promises retribution against anyone who misuses the treasure. Bret has heard the story all his life but he believes the tale is a myth and that he’s in no danger if he spends the money selfishly. Ignoring his sister’s warning, he sets out for a grand adventure heading west.

Mail-order bride Charlotte Dunn is in danger of losing her family's ranch. She lost her husband to a rustler’s bullet when the rustlers stole half her cattle and killed both ranch hands. When she and her stepsons rescue a man who fell from his horse, they soon learn the man has amnesia. From his saddlebags, they discover his name is Bret Craig. Charlotte nurses Bret, manages the ranch, and cares for her three stepchildren she loves. No sooner does Bret regain his memory than they learn the remainder of the herd has been rustled.

Bret must re-evaluate his life in order to embrace the love blossoming between Charlotte and him. Can they save the ranch and recover the stolen cattle?

Through a crazy twist of fate, Caroline Clemmons was not born on a Texas ranch. To make up for this tragic error, she writes about handsome cowboys, feisty ranch women, and scheming villains from a small office her family calls her pink cave. She and her Hero live in North Central Texas cowboy country where they ride herd on their rescued cats and dogs. I enjoyed this fascinating, page-turning tale that starts with a tale from 1734 involving a pirate and merchant ship, a treasure, and a curse passed down. “The treasure would bless anyone who used it for good.” The story picks up in 1885 in Fort Worth, Texas, with Bret Craig and his desire to move to California. Sometimes, dreams are just the beginning, and the adventure along the way is by far more adventurous. The greenhorn Bret will meet Moose who will try and instill safety during his travels.

In Pala Pinto, Texas, newly widowed Charlotte Dunn and her three step-children are burying her husband, Ike. Shot by cattle rustlers, she and the children are left on their own. Not exactly sure how they will survive, she can’t sit around and feel sorry for herself; instead, she carries on with the ranching business.

The story has the good, the bad, and the evil of people. Charlotte is determined to keep the ranch for her oldest son, Davie, as Ike had intended. She must deal with unscrupulous characters, like ranching neighbor Elwood Winfield, who wants the land and doesn’t care how he’ll obtain it. Then her boys come home after witnessing a man falling from his horse and is injured. No matter how bad things are, Charlotte is a kind, generous and caring human, and with the help of her children, she will tend to this injured man, learning his name is Brett Craig.
What a strong woman Charlotte is, and an excellent example of being an honest and compassionate human. She is teaching her children how she lives her life. She is willing to do what is right, no matter the cost.

The story takes on danger, mystery, suspense as cattle is rustled, her homestead is tampered with, and the lives of her, her children, and her ranch hands are endangered. Rather than giving up, she fights for what is right. While this story isn’t just a clean western romance, it has moral lessons within the pages without being preachy. I love the development between Bret and Charlotte and the way he is with her children. He admires her character and isn’t afraid to tell her how proud he is of her.

While some people are willing to turn a blind eye to a few good deeds—mostly in monetary form, trustworthy people see what someone is really like—and Winfield doesn’t fool them. I love a story that we can see the bad guy and his cronies get their comeuppance.

“I see—he’s generous in public and devious in private.”

Will Bret and Moose be able to help the Dunn family besides helping on the ranch? Has Bret found that his idea of an adventure was closer to home than he realized? Will he convince Charlotte that what he can do financially is only right after she helped save his life? Can the ranch be saved? But most of all, will these two find their happily ever after?

“Don’t give up yet. Trust that there’ll be a way.”

“You’ve made me the happiest woman who ever lived. I’m lucky you fell into our lives.”

The author has penned a heartwarming story of maturing, overcoming and rising above adversity. This is Bret and Charlotte's story and the character development is excellent. Bret, in a somewhat immature manner, is running from his family and responsibility. Charlotte's husband and two ranch hands were murdered by cattle thieves. Charlotte is left with widow and with a ranch and three step children to raise. While traveling Bret falls from his horse and is injured and is taken to Charlotte's ranch to be cared for. Shortly after his arrival, the rest of Charlotte's cattle disappear. Bret, and his friend Moose, set out to help solve the theft. During this time a relationship begins to develop between the couple. Will it lead to a HEA. Be sure to read this real page turner to find out. I know you will enjoy it too.
