This is a story about Drake and Nick, two college students who fall in love and quickly develop a deep bond. Hamby writes a sweet, romantic tale with the much beloved happily ever after, and several twists thrown into the mix. The author's gentle, simplistic writing style makes this a quick read, and without overly explicit sexual details it is suitable for most readers. Since the book is not terribly long, I felt the end of the story could have been fleshed out and developed further rather than rushing into an epilogue, but that being said, Hamby is a clever storyteller.

My favorite line from the book:

"Greg was like a weed, a poisonous weed wrapping its leaves around Drake's brain, making him think things that weren't true."

Bright Land was very different than I expected going in—the tone quieter, the romance gentler, and the band mostly in the background. That said, this new adult romance is a good read with a decent amount of angst throughout.

I found Nick and Drake likable overall, but I can’t say I was especially drawn to or invested in either man or the two as a couple. I’m not quite certain if that’s because this was a quieter romance altogether, it not matching what I expected going in, or simply a random “it’s not you, it’s me”. Regardless, their backstories certainly caught my attention and I became increasingly invested in seeing how those elements would unravel and resolve as the book progressed.

Although there was plenty of conflict and strife surrounding the men in regards to their familial relationships, the men’s relationship was fairly even keeled and simple. In fact, I found the relationship to move almost too fast considering Nick and Drake are college students and likely was a contributing factor as to why I wasn’t wholly invested in these two as a couple. Even so, Nick and Drake’s relationship fit and their emotional connection was readily apparent throughout the book, so I think many readers will like this couple.

Although I wasn’t quite sure this would be the book for me at first, Bright Land pulled me in the more I read. A solid story about two new adults finding that special person while confronting some difficult aspects of their lives, I think Bright Land is best suited for those who like college-aged characters and a moderate amount of external conflict/angst.
