Broken Halos (Queen City Rogues, #1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,088 ratings

Oliver Knight’s past is shrouded by sorrow and tragedy, but instead of hiding from it, Ollie owns his truth and uses his experiences to uplift others. As an out and proud pastor, he provides a safe place for LGBTQ Christians to gather and worship, and as a recovering addict, he counsels those pursuing sobriety. Ollie’s life is fulfilling but also a little lonely. He may not have a hard time meeting men, but he does have a hard time getting them to stick around once they discover his vocation.

Archie White is a former drag queen who hung up his stilettos to start an HIV transition home in the memory of someone he held near and dear to his heart. All work and no play has made Archie a very dull man, but he thinks his luck is about to change when a friend introduces him to a dark-eyed stranger. That is until he learns the man is a pastor. Archie detests anything to do with religion, and for very good reasons.

Archie’s gut tells him to run, and Ollie’s heart tells him to pursue. What can a pastor and a sometimes-queen possibly have in common? A desire to find unconditional love with someone who truly sees them. What happens next is the poignant, sweet, and sexy journey for two resilient hearts. Ollie and Archie’s halos might be battered and a little tarnished, but they’re definitely not broken.

Broken Halos is a charming story with heart, heat, and humor. Warning: these characters and their quirky sidekicks may take up permanent residence in your heart, so proceed with caution. Each book in the Queen City Rogues series can be read as part of the series or as a standalone novel. This book contains sexually explicit material and colorful language intended for adults 18 and older.

Oliver "Ollie" Knight is a pastor who's come a long way from the streets where he was found. Kicked out of his home at fifteen because of being gay, Ollie did whatever he had to to survive. Landing in jail led him to the best thing that had ever happened to him, Pastor Randall Givens and his wife Millie. Getting clean and sober and putting his life on the straight and narrow wasn't easy but it was what he had to do. Now fourteen years later he is the pastor of a LGBT church and does counseling in a NA program.
Archie White is a former drag queen who runs Ryan's House, a home for HIV+ people who need help getting back on their feet. Ryan was the police officer who saved Archie and his mother from his abusive father and then helped them get on their feet. Archie has been hurt before by men just wanting some fun and nothing serious, so now he's all about the one night stands. That is until he meets Ollie.
Ollie and Archie have mutual friends so they end up meeting and instant attraction. Ollie is all for dating and seeing where the attraction leads but Archie just wants a quick one off, or does he. Archie fights the attraction well but Ollie doesn't give up and next thing you know, they're seeing where it's going. Archie gets back into drag to see what Ollie's reaction will be. He's convinced that Ollie will dump him when he sees him in drag, just like the men before. When Ollie reacts the exact opposite Archie can't fight his feelings anymore. Archie escorts his mother Maria to seniors bingo night and it turns out Ollie is the pastor calling numbers that night. Bingo calling has never been better. These two lonely, hurt and healing men find that they can trust each other and open their hearts. Sharing their past brings them closer together and the true healing begins.
This was a very good story and very well written. All of the side characters play an integral part and make the story even better. It was nice seeing Andy and Milo again and witnessing the next step in their relationship. I definitely recommend this book and I'll definitely be re-reading it again soon.

Ollie is just the best. From living on the streets and going to jail to being a LGBTQ friendly pastor he has been through so much. He hasn't come out angry and bitter, he's compassionate, forgiving yet still a whole lot of sexy.
And then there's Archie who hasn't been loved for who he is before and who tries his best not to be affected by Ollie. But there's no denying their connection and it might just be worth it to give it a chance.

I love that we got to see Milo and Andy again, the men in Ollies circle of friends (and maybe Archies ex) seems have a story or two in the future and a man in lingerie is just hot.

This is the introduction story to what I believe is the next number ONE, sought after series. Ollie is a Pastor, but a man of God with compassion, love and understanding that life isn't always fair. Archie is the former drag queen Lady Bea Trix, now he owns Ryan's Place, an HIV home for those who need help, care and understanding. These two men are both strong willed in their beliefs. Both have been kicked down by life. But they have both managed to rise above their own personal pain and tried to make life better for others. These characters are fun, quirky, sexy, and can't keep their hands off each other. They also have very active imaginations and distracting fantasies about each other. There is also a wonderful, loving cast of Momma characters that are nosey, bossy, hear everything and are hilarious. This is just a fantastic book that was entertaining from cover to cover. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!

Aimee Nichole Walker is an immediate 1-click and this book proves why.

I can't believe how good this book was. Archie and Ollie were absolutely wonderful and the secondary cast of characters just made me wish for their stories (can we say Keegan and the fact that his story needs to be next)!!!!

This story was lovely in how it addressed a sensitive topic of religion in the LGBTQ community and how it effects those that feel shunned but still maintain their faith. Ms. Walker doesn't shy away from the hard topics and has a way about her writing that explains things but doesn't make you feel ignorant. There's a sensitivity to her writing that I just love. I just adored how Archie and Ollie came to be together. I just love lace and garter belts! LOL

This is a definite winner and I can't wait to see what comes next for these rogue's!

A pastor and a drag queen. Each mans history shaping them into the men they are. They have to get past their differences to get their future.

I really wanted to love this book for several reasons. Ollie and Archie were fleshed out and likable. The family they each made was lovely with the supporting characters well done.

The conflict of Ollie being a pastor and Archie wanting nothing to do with him for that reason just didn’t ring true for me. As the basis for the conflict it just didn’t draw me in. As the start of a new spin off series I guess I hoped for more.

It's not my first series by Aimee Nicole Walker, but this is the first of the Queen City Rogues. It's so easy to read, story is easy to follow and the characters can be imagined very easily because of the details and character buildup. Can't put them down!

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected!

This one took me a bit by surprise. I wasn't sure how the religion/pastor side of it was going to work- especially given in pretty much very single MM romance I've read, religion = bigotry and extreme homophobia. This one still had those aspects, but it also had people of faith who were also accepting rather than judging.

Oliver was one of those who fell into the stereotype - when he was outed to his family and church, they kicked him out. He did what he felt he needed to in order to survive, which landed him on the wrong side of the law, in jail and detoxing on his own. It wasn't until a kind pastor showed him acceptance that he found something else - hope. Taken under his wing, 14 years later we meet Ollie again. Now a pastor himself, he tries to help those who struggle with sobriety and acceptance, running a church and NA chapter that focused on LGBTQ+ people and awareness.

Archer is a retired drag-queen who still haunts the scene yelling with special events. He met Ollie through mutual friends, but a string of previous relationships have left him jaded as he is yet to find someone who accepts him for all of who he is - both the gay man and the queen. He has a strong dislike for anything associated with religion after qhat his mother went through when he was young. While sparks fly between him and Ollie, he can't get past Ollie's vocation and pushes him away. But Ollie isn't giving up and wants to prove to Archer that he is a man as well as a pastor, that religion can be about acceptance and that not all churches are the same.

Their story is well written and beautiful to follow. Ollie's sermons also provide some very good words to live by - choosing your own family, acceptance, and forgiveness being the main ones.

I did like that both Archer and Ollie got some closure on the issues that arose in the story - but I also felt that Ollie's resolution was rushed, and could have been explored better. From when he received the shock to meeting with his NA sponsor, to how it finished up - bits of the story were missing. One example that bugged me - before Ollie's meeting with his sponsor, there was never a mention of Ollie struggling with his sobriety, or needing a drink or hit, yet the conversation he had with his sponsor indicated that it was an ongoing issue. I felt this was very abrupt and didn't fit the Ollie I'd come to know.

I could almost say the same about Archer and Ryder, but from the sounds of it, Ryder's involvement is a setup for the next book - if not then I'll be sorely disappointed as there was no resolution to the issue Ryder faced at the end, even if he did finally accept that Ollie and Archer were the real deal and apologised to them.

In short, a better read than I was expecting, and definitely a different storyline associated with religion and MM romance than I've come across too.
