Broken Promise: Ghost Paranormal Romance (Beyond Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 197 ratings

For fans of "The Ghost Whisperer," this series is for YOU!
Previously published as "Silent Whisper."
What does a mob capo want with a girl from the sticks?
Everything . . . but this isn't my story . . . it's Karlie's.

My name is Karlie Masterson, and my life's plan was
not to end up in a brothel in Chester, WV . . . yet I did. Long story. At any rate I made the cardinal mistake of falling in love with one of my steady ... um ... er ... clients... Nick. And he was pretty hot . . . and pretty complicated. He wanted to take me away from all of this debauchery, which I have to admit was a very noble gesture, if not totally unheard of in these neck of the mountains. So, because I'd learned about survival at an early age, I implemented caution before accepting his gallant offer. So, it kind of went like this:

"Is your real name even Nick?" I asked directly.

"Sort of,"he replied, a slight smile gracing his sensual mouth.

"I don't know anything about you except what you just now told me.
I don't know your last name or if I'm even
permitted to know your last name.
You've been coming to Belle's for months now and you don't share a thing
with me . . .
well, except for the obvious,"
I replied feeling a blush warming my cheeks.
I actually think I saw him smile genuinely for the first time ever.
I don't know what he found so amusing; it was all fairly
confusing to me.

"My last name is Castellano. I'm Dominic Castellano. But you can continue to call me 'Nick."

Holy Mother of Christ . . .

I've now read every book this author has written. I LOVE Andrea Smith... I heard about this book in May before it was fully written and I will just say I was skeptical. I've read all of her other books and I wasn't sure how a "spiritual" book would be received from readers...this being said I LOVED this book.. it's not hard to fall in love with the characters from the get go and its very much believable and life like. I love how Andrea is able to take you back in history and keep you guessing the entire book.. you think you know whose who and what's what....but you don't..the right amount of suspense, drama and romance..Perfect Andrea!!!

I feel like I need to start this off by saying that it wasn't really a paranormal romance. Although there are elements of PR, it really wasn't what I focused on as the reader. I don't do paranormal. I can't get into the whole genre, but this was something that had my attention and held it. It was tragic, beautiful and a little haunting (pun intended).

The story begins with Parrish Locke who encounters a particular gift while in an accident. That gift brings us to the past where a love story is told surrounding Karlie and Dominic. Now, Karlie and Dominic's love wasn't traditional in any sense of the word, but it was ageless... it was eternal. This is a story that is hard to explain without accidentally giving something away, the twists of this story creates so many angles that it is best to go in blind and just trust that Ms. Smith won't disappoint.

I found myself not able to fully connect to Karlie or Parrish but it had no impact on the pull this story had. For me, Dominic was the star. He shined. There was something about him that had me hooked. It wasn't just the typical book-boyfriend set up.... it was something about him as a character that just grabbed me and didn't let me go. My heart broke for him when he was at his most vulnerable.

This was such an original story. I was reluctant to start this one, but once I did, I could not put it down. I had to know how it had all ended, I needed the mystery to be be unfolded and I needed to be set free. For most of the story I had forgotten that this had any element of PR infused with it, I just wanted their love story.

I have no doubt that I will continue on with this series to see what becomes of Parrish and the journey that she will be taken on. I hope that as the series continues we get to see a little bit of her own love story as well.

I really like books that break genre rules, this one does that SO well! When love doesn't always go right and there's tragedy involved, it makes a story richer. I don't like muddled theology but made exception to just read the story. There was a creepy indwelling Mother-Father-Daughter moment near the books end that could've been left out. Ms. Smith's style is effortless as her characters change, grow and learn to love in spite of life's ups and downs. There is more I would say, but it would spoil the readers enjoyment. Ms. Smith is a prolific writer, I'll read the next book in this series! Well done, be encouraged, keep writing!

If I could give this book 10 stars I would. Paranormal romance is not what I usually read, and when I first heard this was a PNR I had my doubts. But, Andrea Smith erased all doubt and wrote a bittersweet, heart achingly beautiful PNR that will stay in my heart forever. This was not a far fetched story for me, I believe there is more to life after death, and Andrea Smith captured that to perfection. I don't do spoilers, all I can say is this is a must read. It's not only a beautiful romance, there is also a dose of humor, plenty of angst and wonderful characters you will fall in love with. I cannot wait to read more about Parrish!

Very different book from Andrea Smith but I have to say I liked it a lot! I'm a big fan of paranormal books but even if you're not you'll like the small ghost/limbo world aspects of the series. We begin in the present time with a young woman in West Virginia skidding out of control & having a car accident which ends up in the local cemetery. All of a sudden she is transported by a "woman" she sees in the cemetery (is it a dream or real? is she in a coma or dead?) back to 1986. Dominic Castellano meets Karlie while she is working in a brothel & Karlie soon becomes his paid mistress. Dominic's mafia family has already taken so much from Karlie so once she figures out Dominic's true identity she plots her revenge. I waffled for a bit - is Dominic a true mob boss or is he being real about his feelings for Karlie? Karlie is definitely the other woman in his life, often left waiting for him, insecure & alone. Some of the book is in Dominic's point of view & it eased my mind that he seemed like a legit guy in an illegal mafia family. Dominic spends too much time with Karlie helping her with her career which doesn't go unnoticed by his family, and then poof, Dominic is suddenly away for long stretches of time, leaving Karlie lonely, confused, and scared - rightfully so. The kind of hot passion Dominic & Karlie share & their admission of deep love can't help Karlie when she discovers secrets that force her to run away & protect her own family. When we come back to the woman in 2014 in the hospital after the car accident we now know exactly who she is from Karlie's walk down memory lane! I love being shocked! I was a little disappointed that Parrish, the 27 year old woman in 2014 who has the experience of a lifetime being transported back to 1986, has a mission it seems in the future books, like this is her calling. I guess I'll go with it if that is what this series is about because God I love Parrish! I loved how she changed a bit, became more passionate & more powerful after sharing memories with Karlie from 1986, pretty cool!

My heart is in limbo, let me tell you. Just WOW!! I'm trying to find the appropriate words to explain to you, the reader what I have just experienced.

This story sucked me in like a vacuum. I was taking on a journey back in time, reading this book through the eyes and memories of Karlie. Jesus Christ powerful just doesn't seem to cut it, let me have a think.

This book goes beyond storytelling, it's like I just took a voyage through someone else's life. Yes it's a story and having these feelings can only reinforce that this author is indeed a magnificent writer but all these emotions I was experiencing from a book is just hard to comprehend.

Parrish is in a car accident and what she experiences after that is going to be hard to believe but yet it is believable just open your mind. Let this story take you where it took me.

Karlie such a beautiful woman, definitely had the worst start in life but she's strong, a survivor, like the cat with nine lives and we all know what happened to the cat.

Dominic such a handsome man, scrap that he's strikingly attractive. His features are so exceptional you can't help but be impressed. Unfortunately he's living a life that is unmentionable. He doesn't seem comfortable with it but continues to live it.

Belle is a wise woman, seen the world with a view very different to you or I. She's the closet thing Karlie has to a mother, no matter how inappropriate the circumstances. Belle gave Karlie and her best friend Lana a job when they left college. She's looked after them the best she could and obviously wanting a better life for them both.

Lana is a lovely girl, sometimes forgetting where she came from or maybe she really does want to forget. Her love for Karlie is one thing that's guaranteed. Friends forever, not just words they have the deepest meaning.

Walter completely misguided but all for love. What would you do for love? These people come together in extraordinary circumstances.

As you can tell I could talk about this book all day long. It's a book that has made a safe haven in my memory bank and a special place in my heart.

The greatest book I have read and I've read some amazing books. This has touched me deeply. I've kept it completely spoiler free and that's not easy when I want you all to know about this story.

My ending to this review has to be. DOWNLOAD TODAY! I've laughed, cried great big ugly tears. I've felt sadness mixed with happiness. It's a must read.

OMG!! Andrea Smith I don't know how you wrote that but you did and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this heartwarming yet exciting read.

    Joandisalovebooks say's 5 star perfection.

    hmm...

First time reading this author, and I enjoyed this journey of intense love and a little paranormal added in the mix. It kept me intrigued enough that I couldn't stop reading it until I got to the very end.

The 3 star is because I was sort of disappointed about one aspect... won't type more.

However, I think I will read the next instalment... Clouds In My Coffee

3.0 out of 5 stars More a contemporary style romance with a little paranormal twist

Silent Whisper (Limbo #1) by Andrea Smith
    3.5 stars!!

"I fell in love with you then, and the magnetic force of that love became even stronger, Karlie. I loved you like I've loved no one else... ever. You are my heart - and my soul, but most importantly -you are my eternal love."

This is going to be a hard book to review without giving too much away, but I will try. This book reminds me of a TV programme from the 80's and 90's "oh boy!" (I am showing my age here). I also have to say that this is not your typical paranormal read either; there are no vampires, werewolves, shifters or anything else on that kind of scale. This is more like a contemporary/romance novel with a little paranormal twist; however I can see the paranormal side developing as the series goes along.

Parrish is a woman that is living her life to the full; she has a fantastic boyfriend called Ryan and is a model. She is however getting to that age where she wants to do something different so has plans to assist Ryan with his photography career. One night though her life is altered and Parrish is given a front row seat to the romance of Dominic and Karlie.

Dominic/Nick is the son of a mob boss and Karlie is a prostitute in a brothel. Dominic is a regular of hers but she has always felt a deeper connection with him. He is not like the others, he makes love to her, he cherishes her, he appreciates her and he satisfies her. Nick offers her an out, he wants her for himself and in true Pretty Woman style he whisks her away to a life of luxury and looks after her well, as his mistress. Nick's marriage is not what it seems either but being catholic divorce is a no no so do not drop this read because of cheating, it is not like that at all.

"I don't want you effing anyone else anymore."

Dominic and Karlie have an intense relationship, their love is genuine, the chemistry is sizzling and their connection is off the charts. Both of these realise that what they have is special and is a once in a lifetime. However, the mob has a tendency to interfere in relationships especially if you are not one of "the family" and their relationship has a lot of uphill battles to contend with.

"It seems that people on both sides were hell-bent on keeping us apart, Karlie. All of the times that I reminded you to trust me, and I assured you that you'd always have my protection - you still didn't trust it, did you?"

Parrish has been given a job and now it is up to her to rise to the challenge, her mum has trusted her with this task and she cannot fail. Parrish's eyes have been opened, everything she thought she knew was wrong, now it was up to her to make amends.

I have not read anything like this before and it is a refreshing read. In true Andrea Smith style she delivers the heat in this book and the romantic connection between Dominic and Karlie was palpable. I loved the characters and I loved the premise. I cannot wait to see where this series goes going forward.

    "Well played, Dominic. Well played."

A very different love story, but what a twist.
You know when the book was good, when you still find yourself thinking about it weeks later. Parrish is uncertain as to what direction to take her career and a car accident changes all of that.
This story involves events that happened before Parrish was born and as she starts her journey of discovery never exodus ting that eventually the past and present collide. So looking forward to reading next in the series because this was incredibly good.
I have now read all of Andrea Smith's published Ebooks and she is such a good storyteller.

I can't wait to see what other 'asssignments' Parrish is given. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
