Brothers Sen Gogh (Odd Tales From Bombay And Bangalore) Kindle Edition

3.5 out of 5 stars 19 ratings

He wanted to stay true to his art.
It would cost him his sanity and his life.
She wanted a life of dignity.
It was a recipe for poverty and strife.
Soubhik and Sourav, inspired by real heroes Vincent and Theo, try to make it in the cut throat indie music industry of Mumbai with the power of their brotherly love, and the love of their kind of music. The story honestly but delicately documents their romances, their passion, their love for the craft, yet the desire to give a sane life to their loved ones.
Will they live their dream?
Can they stay true to their principles?
This is what immortality may mean, not a chain of infinite moments, but a moment that is immortalized in time for its permanence.

Deeply moving and simultaneously entertaining,
this is a major novel by an artist of note. Very highly recommended. -- Amazon top 50 reviewer

An enjoyable book that will stand the test of time. Highly Recommended 5/5 -- Amazon reviewer

When the author writes about music I just kept reading without taking my eyes off and awestruck about the people who are obsessed about the industry like the Sengupta brothers wanting to make a career out of it. Only when I read this book, understood the love for music by the protagonists who made me ask , why would anyone love it so much even when it causes them excruciating pain and losses unrecoverable? -- A leading book blog

The struggles of a creative and talented artist, complexities of relationships, middle class misfortunes, inevitabilities of certain decisions in life are all cocktailed up perfectly in this musical journey of brothers who are tested time and again by fate and society. -- A leading book blog

An interesting story about relationships and emotions. -- A leading book blog

This is the first time that I have read such a genre of literature and that too portraying someone's musical journey through words and really like the concept, this book is indeed a treasure for people who are exploring with their different genres. -- Amazon reviewer

I would like to recommend this book to everyone who wants to do something magical in their life. --- Amazon Reviewer

This is a lovely book based on a true unique theme – – using the Van Gogh brothers as a model. How the journey of these brothers is related to Van Gogh brothers is really brilliant. --- Amazon Reviewer

This is a lovely book based on a true unique theme – – using the Van Gogh brothers as a model. How the journey of these brothers is related to Van Gogh brothers is really brilliant.

Next the characters are brought to life by the expert writing of the author. I began to relate to the brothers as I was drawn into there struggles tragedies and fears.

In the end the overall themes of joy friendship/companionship and love of music tied this book together. Where I learned from this part is the hard work of the artists particularly behind the scenes.

I really liked the concept. Nicely imagined and unique plot. Writing style and narration style are very strong..

Finally, I can’t leave this review without touching on the cover. I rarely comment on the covers unless they’re particularly poor or outstanding. This one was truly outstanding it had a and impressionist moe. to it that would make me grab it off the shelves just to have a peek.

Overall this is a very enjoyable book and I recommend it

Indian author Manik Bal writes poetry, short stories, and novels that focus on ‘the Indian middle class, its aspirations and dilemmas.’ His collection of short stories – WHISKEY AND SUICIDE – found an admiring audience, and now he turns to a full-length novel – BROTHERS SEN GOGH – and his reputation is advancing. Moving from short stories to novel format comes naturally to Manik: his initial novel is impressive on every level.

Not only has the author created a fine historically related tale that compares the lives of artist Vincent Van Gogh and his brother Theo – a topic the resonates with all art lovers – and parallels that relationship with the fictional Indian brothers Soubhik and Sourav Sengupta in the field of music, but he also adds touching insights into family relationships, talent, creativity and mental health.

Manik’s prose is eloquent, and the core of his sensitivity is evident as he opens his Prologue with a tender death scene: ‘Ravindranath Sengupta could not even look up to see Sourav, The weakness was overpowering and he knew he had a few precious last days. Sourav had come to Shidpur in midst of a couple of launches that he thought were crucial to his career. He did not care though. For him, his family meant more then anything else. He was a little puzzled though when Dad sent away Soubhik and asked mom also to go out…Dad asked him to come closer…”What is it Dad? Don’t worry, the doctors here are the best, they are going to make sure you are out in a week.” Dad made a face indicating he did not agree with the doctor….I know I am going to go. I am not unhappy, I have lived a happy life. I am proud of both you and Soubhik. I am more proud of your love for each other. You are the Van Gogh Brothers of the modern age.” And with that touching opening the concept of the story is established.

The author’s synopsis explains the parallels of the story well: ‘Brothers Sen Gogh ruminates about the pains of a sensitive soul, the inability of society to identify artistic talent and the heartbreaking tragedy of a flawed brotherly relationship. Soubhik Sengupta is an indie musician with emotional fragility. Sourav Sengupta is an indie music producer who is unable to launch his brother. Will their life follow the script of the life of Van Gogh brothers? Brothers Sen Gogh is a journey into the real nature of artistic freedom, the intricate relationship between talent and destructive sensitivity, struggle of the life of an indie musician and the perils of an alternate life. Traveling in the bylanes of Mumbai, the story tracks the tragic lives of the Sengupta brothers as they try and build an alternate life following their passions.’

I received this book as an ARC, so I'd like to thank Booksprout the author, Manin Bal, for the opportunity.

This book follows the life of two brothers involved in the indie music industry, showing us their struggles, fears, tragedies, but also the things that brought them joy: family and music.

Loved the music references as they set you up in the characters mind and mood, while also telling you a little more about their personality.

Not gonna lie, at some point I was a little enervated with the story, and find it somewhat slow. However, I just had to finish it. I would say, though, I was kinda surprised by the end.

Some takeaways from the books are more knowledge of the Indian culture, and some quotes that resonate a lot with I think everyone.

I would like to say more but... "Life is strange. The most important is often the most incommunicable in a verbal sense."

This book is about 2 pairs of brothers. One is the famous Van Gogh brothers and the other, of Musicians Soubhik Sengupta and Sourav Sengupta. I was particularly invested in the journey of the younger brother. His struggles, love, emotions, and desperation felt very real and close to home. The emotions are very well written by the author and the similarities of the Sen brothers story with the Van Gogh brothers story make it an interesting read. It is an emotional and enjoyable read. Worth trying out.

"Life is strange. The most important is often the most uncommunicable in a verbal sense."

This is the story of Vincent and Theo van Gogh wrapped in the fictional story of Soubhik and Sourav Sengupta, with music as their art form. And, he adds India into the mix: music and acting, production and dreams that die and live on the whims of the public at whose feet it is laid to be lauded or destroyed.

With family support or without it. The question becomes can he live up to his brother's expectations? Can Sourav live up to his own expectations? Will Soubhik ever understand what his father told him as he lay dying? Will the brothers survive?

As a long ago radio personality at a small college station as well as a community choral participant, I love music As a retired minister who has published award winning poetry and written sermons and now reads and reviews books across genres, I must tip my hat to this author for breaking out of his shell as a poet and crafting a well written book rooted in his own love of time, place, art and family, as well as the expectations of all of those things. There are places in the book that take off like a high speed train while others try to catch up resulting in an enjoyable book that will stand the test of time. Highly Recommended 5/5

"Brothers Sen Gogh" unveils a poignant narrative of Soubhik and Sourav, inspired by the real-life bond of Vincent and Theo, as they navigate the unforgiving landscape of the indie music industry in Mumbai. The story captures the essence of their struggle to uphold their artistic integrity while grappling with the harsh realities of life.

Soubhik's commitment to staying true to his art, even at the expense of his sanity and life, sets the stage for a compelling exploration of the sacrifices artists make for their craft. Conversely, Sourav's aspiration for a life of dignity, despite the potential for poverty and strife, adds layers of complexity to the brothers' journey.

The narrative delicately documents the brothers' romances, their passion for music, and their unwavering love for their craft. The power of their brotherly bond becomes a driving force as they confront the challenges of an industry known for its cutthroat nature.

The echoes of Vincent and Theo's story add a historical and artistic dimension to the tale, suggesting that immortality may not be a chain of infinite moments but a single moment immortalized for its enduring significance.

As readers follow the journey of Soubhik and Sourav, the central questions of whether they can live their dream and stay true to their principles create an air of anticipation. The story unfolds as a reflection on the meaning of immortality, hinting at the permanence of moments that transcend the passage of time.

"Brothers Sen Gogh" promises to be a poignant exploration of art, sacrifice, and the pursuit of dreams in the vibrant but challenging landscape of the Mumbai indie music scene. The blend of romance, passion, and a commitment to one's craft creates a narrative that is both heartfelt and thought-provoking.

Brother Sen Gosh is one of the amazing novels I have read. A story of the life of Indies musicians, finding love in search of record deals, brotherly love, and parental training. It is one of those books you should pick while searching for anything about India and life in Mumbai. Recommended!

When I started reading this novel, I was struck by the depth of knowledge of the music industry the author shared. Then I got drawn in by the emotions of the individual characters. As the story progresses the lives of the two brothers provide a peek into current reality. The flow of the story is great, language is impeccable. I love how the vulnerability of the characters is beautifully expressed. A good read indeed👍🏻

This is a story of two brothers, living in two different Worlds, passing through two different phases of lives; and apart from the differences, intricately bound by dreams and urges.
Inspired by the lives of Gogh brothers, it's an extraordinary fictional journey, exquisite and captivating.

Soubhik and Sourav are in the world of Music, but fate differenciates their careers. Sourav becomes a successful music producer, a popular face while Soubhik, being a musical genius, remains in the darkness. As time passes, situations change and we're going to experience the story in another dimension.

While the story may start at a measured pace, it steadily gains momentum as the main characters and their objectives take shape. Once established, the reader will become fully immersed in the gripping sequences that unfold.
The author's exquisite presentation can be observed in the vivid portrayal of various plotlines and settings, transporting readers through time. Besides, the well built characters, well written narratives, striking conversations have made it an enjoyable read

The book has catchy cover and seeing title and cover clicked a little bit idea about the subject of the book. So I had to pick it up. I will brother summarise the blurb. It’s about the story of two pair of brothers. One pair is Van Gogh brother. Many of us might know about them. The other pair is of Shoubhik and Shourav. Shourav Sengupta is a music producer while Shoubhik is a musician with emotional fragility. Shourav is unable to launch his brother. I liked their journey and struggles to Mumbai. Especially Shourav. Belonging to small town and adjusting in metro city. And especially struggling life and then fascinated to posh area. I think those tiny things every middle class people including me can relate it. Also following your passion in different area than routine course is also quote commonly relatable. Now how the journey of these brothers is related to Van Gogh brother is really fascinating. I was wondering but author has quite wittily correlated it. Read the book to know that. Plus I only heard about famous painter and his painting but never about Van Gogh brothers. It was interesting to read about them too. I really liked the concept. Nicely imagined and unique plot. Author is thorough with story. Writing style and narration style gives us the proof of that. Author has used good vocabulary and language. Indeed a quite different read than my usual reads. Overall good one.
