Buried in his Boots: Laugh-out-loud adventures of a feisty seaside sleuth (Merry Summerfield Cozy Mysteries Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 130 ratings

Brilliant house. Amazing views. I thought I’d hit the house-sitting jackpot until Claude, the big beagle lookalike, unearthed a body from behind a collapsing wall in the yard.
First we saw the distinctive Russian boots that proved to be a truly gruesome trophy. This led to all sorts of speculation.

Hi – I’m Merry Summerfield, freelance book editor and house-sitter of Drizzle Bay. I’ve been tipped out of my beachside haven because it’s now a crime scene - but do you think that’ll stop me trying to discover what really happened?
The murderers won’t be Dex and Dom - the short, bald, house-renovators - because this is their lovely new home. Boastful Brett Royal from the Whale Watch boat is talking far too much and bringing the murder to everyone’s attention, so it’s probably not him. My brother’s new equestrian girlfriend? But she seems so
nice! The semi-criminal boys being re-trained on the forestry land in the hills? Hmmm…

Suggestions come thick and fast, but nothing seems quite right. Detectives Bruce Carver and Marion Wick are inhot pursuit of the truth, but they won’t solve the mystery of whether my summer flirtation will be with Vicar Paul or Black-ops John. That remains as murky as the mud on Lord Drizzle’s farm. Maybe a Christmas concert will help?

This fun cozy mystery is full of your favorite people from the other books in the series. Plus some new ones, a puzzling murder, a touch of romance, and laugh-out-loud lines. Be happy – Merry is back!

Hello! Thank you so much for visiting my Amazon author page. You might already know me as Kris Pearson, author of steamy romances. But I see you've discovered my life of crime...

Yes, my other side is cozy mysteries. Bodies, but no gory scenes. Quite a bit of flirting. And definitely laughs as you follow the clues my sleuth discovers as she accidentally bumps into bodies along the way. There's a prequel called DEAD IN A DECK CHAIR, and the first book in the series proper is MURDER IN THE ASLE. This is followed by XMAS MARKS THE SPOT. Then there's MURDER! THEY MEOWED and BODY! THEY BARKED. BURIED IN HIS BOOTS follows this, and there's a box-set of three to save you money. All in KU. I've just launched (for my birthday) THE KNIFE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, and I have more in the pipeline for sure.

I'm from New Zealand, and Drizzle Bay village doesn't QUITE exist. Let's say it's every small coastal settlement I've ever holidayed in or passed through on road-trips. Therefore, in my mind it's very real. So come with me and meet a cast of characters which grows with every book.

BURIED IN HIS BOOTS is a standalone read. It is a cozy mystery so there will be a murder. In this genre we as readers don't really care about the murdered person, it is just the fun with finding out who did it. Merry is up to her old ways again. This time she finds a body in a wall. Well, she didn't actually find the body, her dog did but she was the first person there. She had to call the Lt. and let him know she found a body. This will be her fifth one in as many months. It always seems to happen to her. This is a series; you will not be lost if it is your first read. Continuing characters are easily explained. All the stories are good reads.

Naturally the village is as buzz as the police will have to not only remove the remains but will also have to identify the corpse. This particular body was buried with his boots on. There is a big clue as the boots are not commonly found in New Zealand.

In this story Merry is spending a lot of time checking out the various bachelors in the village and to her surprise she is finding out that they are also checking her out! And surprise of surprises her lawyer brother has a love interest. That is one we didn't see coming but are happy to report on. I really enjoyed this fun read and I definitely recommend it. Merry is always good for a laugh even though her findings are not at all funny! I'll miss Merry if this is the last book in the series.

I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer, nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am not a bot. I am a reader, and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 9/10/2023

You just never know the real story behind the face.but if the strength of character exists it can end well

Absolutely loved this book. The plot was interesting, the scenario of all the intertwined characters from previous books was just plain fun and seeing how the characters developed was so fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Kristie Klewes (aka Kris Pearson) is one of my favorite authors.

I really liked Merry and I think this was my first introduction to her and this series.
She said, "I'm just naturally curious". And the person she was with responded, "And it gets you into trouble." I said "person" because there was more than one person who said that her curiosity got her in trouble. And they were spot on about that. She gets into some hilarious things as well as some dangerous ones as well. Past dangers also get mentioned where her curiosity led her. Even though I hadn't read those it was easy to follow.
I got to know Merry's brother, Graham which I enjoyed especially since he's such an opposite to Merry.
In one particular case, I loved how it was written when it came to a specific mystery how Merry thought. Her blood ran cold with dread. Her brain ran hot with curiosity. Another favorite was when a person wanted to run something by her because she had a "devious brain."
Merry had some interesting men floating around her but I was hoping Merry would find "her man."
Fabulous twist at the end and I liked that.

This book was my first experience with Ms. Klewes’ work, and I was highly impressed. There were fun laugh out loud moments, lovable dogs, and a great murder mystery. Add in a couple of romantic possibilities for the main character and some colorful townsfolk and you have a highly entertaining and enjoyable read! I will definitely be reading more books in this series. I received a free copy of this book via BookSprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Merry Summerfield seems to have a knack for finding bodies . She is house-sitting for a couple of house-renovators when a poorly built retaining wall subsides, and the dog uncovers a body. Once Merry discovers a body she wants to find out what happened, which doesn't please the local police.

The guilty party was not who I expected.

This book is set in a small New Zealand village and I loved the reference to my favourite New Zealand author.

I plan to go back and read the earlier books in the series. I was surprised to discover that Kristie Klewes is another name for the first New Zealand author that I read who hooked me on sexy romances years ago.
