Burning Addiction (Consortium Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition
Doctor Lucas Martel works nightshift in the emergency room at Eureka Hospital. He’s reclusive and brilliant at his job, and he’s all too aware that not everything in Eureka is as it seems. He’s also a vampire, one who chooses to blend in with humans rather than feed on them.
Something strange is happening to the homeless and addicts on the streets of Eureka; many have gone missing or ended up dead, and others have overdosed on drugs so strong, no human cure can counteract them. Not normally concerned with human tragedies, the vampires can’t stand back and let this play out, or they risk exposing their world to the humans.
Brennan must face his demons, and Lucas will discover many things about himself, and what he believes to be true: a seedy underground of rogue vampires and drugs that must be stopped, at any cost. *Warning: contains references to drug use and abuse.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2021I really debated how to rate this book because I really did like it - for about 75% of the way in. The author did a great job of world building and character development and the story is a completely unique idea. Rogue vampires are spiking drugs and selling them to drug addicts, only to turn around and abduct them once they've used enough of the drug. Lucas, is a doctor and a vampire, that tries to help a young drug addict that seemingly overdoses. Brennan has had a really hard life and doesn't care about much except for his next fix. When these two meet it becomes more than doctor/patient and more than either is really prepared for. There was so much detail in this book and I was totally engrossed until about 25% to the end. It felt like the author suddenly had a time crunch to finish and just sort of rushed through to the ending. Although the plot was mostly wrapped up, it didn't feel cohesive to the rest of the book. The characters that were so three dimensional through the first two-thirds, were suddenly flat and rather two dimensional. It just fell a little bit short and I was left wishing it had been a bit longer and more drawn out. Despite that, I really did like this and it's definitely worth reading. The storyline alone is very intriguing and I've not read anything like this before.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2023I really enjoyed this story and can't t to read the rest of the series. The story of Lucas and Brennan was excellent. I loved the hope that Lucas started to instill in Brennan even after he had given up on life completely and saw no end to his life of addiction.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2020I felt so sad for Brennan and his situation, a wrong decision changing it forever.
Then he meets Lucas, a man with his own secret. Together they embark on an adventure, where Brennan comes to realise that nothing in his world is what it seems. I loved the premise, and the developing bond between Lucas and Brennan.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2020I liked this story from the beginning. It was well developed and the characters didn't fall in love immediately. But then 3/4 of the way through, it all just seemed rushed as if the writer had hurried to conclude everything and finish the story.
It was sad how little Brennan thought of himself. He thinks he's worthless and no one can love him, he'll just hurt them somehow. In his mind he's just an addict who earns money for drugs, gets high, then repeats. He just can't see that Lucas really feels this need to help him, to keep him safe, and it takes a traumatic event to finally get Brennan to see that Lucas is everything he needs in his life.
Lucas's friend Ben is in town for his job for The Twelve, as he calls them, and discovers what's going on with the recent increases in OD's and missing people. And who's behind it.
Then the story is rushed as the trio magnificently fight and defeat most of a 20+ team of vampires with only crossbows, wooden stakes, and a UV light flashlight. Honestly, it was disappointing after such a build up to have everything seem so rushed to solve the problem and save the day. It was like the author felt they only had so many pages left to finish the story and they were thinking, "quick, quick, let's wrap this up!"
One other thing that bothered me was how in the beginning of the story the POV between chapters would change only to back up and replay most of what just happened in the previous chapter. I have no problem with changes of POV, but I didn't need to read what had already happened over again, just from the other characters POV. It felt like wasted words.
Other than all of that, I really did like the story. The characters were well developed, and definitely likeable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got doctor and a Drug user
Wow, I was not expecting this book to be so encapsulating. Not having read the blurb, I went straight in and listened. The narrator was excellent. Very clear and easy to listen to.
We meet Brennan, a drug user, just before he ends up in hospital with an overdose of street drugs.
Lucas was his doctor and felt drawn towards Brennan as soon as he saw him lying on the hospital bed.
This story takes us through a journey from hunting drug dealers to helping an addict. Vampires and the seedy underworld loved this book, well written and thoroughly enjoyable.
Excellent narration from Allen Jeffries. Very clear and easy to listen to. Although, like usual, I sped up the audio, and I listened at 1.40 speed on audible, but I do prefer all my audios to be a little quicker.
