With a secret even he doesn’t know
A backwater city…
With a countdown to an explosion no one is expecting
A secret Covenant…
And a conspiracy to break it to pieces
Jason Kilkenny is a new arrival in the Canadian city of Calgary. Unlike most newcomers, Jason isn’t looking for a job in oil and gas: he’s a half-fae changeling that wants to get away from the politics of the inhuman races.
He soon learns that despite being a supernatural backwater, the city is run by a near-godlike Wizard—and the shadows are full of unseen dangers. Jason’s here to hide, but he finds himself called to service by Calgary’s understaffed Fae Court.
As supernatural politics collide in his new home, Jason’s plan to keep his head down is shattered and he finds himself testing the limits of his meager gifts. He cannot run, he cannot hide…and if he loses, he loses everything.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2022The worldbuilding is fine. The plot is good.
In this paranormal/alternate world, the supernaturals are hiding in plain sight. They have jobs, businesses, they go to school, university just as normal humans do.
They are vastly outnumbered. Only a few humans know they exist, and they say nothing.
They are vastly outnumbered, so of course they cooperate for the greater good of everyone.
...
??
Naw, only kidding. It's a massive MMA cagefight to the death. No wonder there are so few of them. A wonder that some of them manage to become centuries old.
Still, every story needs a plot, and this story is well told.
I have objections.
• Genetics. Just once, I would like to read a paranormal story where the author tries to follow simple rules of inheritance. Mendel's laws would be quite enough. Mr Stewart doesn't seem to have even heard of genetics. He trows out random (s)craps that the various kinds of fae are infertile with each other, but are fertile with humans... He has a completely new definition of "Changeling". A changeling is the result of breeding between fae and human... Possibly he wants to avoid terms such as half-breed, but it is very confusing. It doesn't get better when he somehow mixes in genealogy. A fae with a better title is more powerful, and is not allowed to have children with the lesser ones. There could be genetics hiding in this, but if that is the case, it is not explained.
• Metalurgy. Mercury and Quicksilver are somehow not the same element... An addition is given as explaination, but why not just invent a new name? Even worse, Cold Iron and Steel are not the same element, with no explaination at all.
So, on the whole, a good new paranormal fantasy world, and a believable plot, but glaring breaking of natural laws - which should be the same as ours, or explainations should be given of why not.
5 Stars, but with a big minus.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2019Solid beginning in a new series filled with a variety of supernatural characters. I'd just come off of a string of books that had failed to entice me to finish them. Frankly, I started this book when I was up and down in the middle of the night with a nasty gastro-intestinal bug and the book that I was in the middle of reading (an very good autobiographical account of one hiker's thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail) kept going on and on about food about every other page. It was NOT what I needed at that moment.) So the conditions weren't very auspicious when I started this book. However, I was pleasantly surprised and intrigued and grateful beyond words to be distracted by a good story with snappy dialogue from Page 1 to get my mind off my misery. We have the fae, we have wizards, we have shape-shifters and gnomes, and we have some vampires thrown in for good measure in this story. If that sounds confusing, it's actually not. The supernatural politics got a little confusing in spots but the main character was just as confused by it all so I felt in good company. There were also rip-roaring battle scenes and weaponry descriptions for those who like that kind of thing. The story has a definite beginning and end but leaves the stage set for the next book in the series. I appreciated that since I particularly dislike books that leave you abruptly in the middle of a cliffhanger, as though it is Friday at the soap operas and you can just turn on your TV for the next installment the following Monday, instead of having to wait most likely a freaking year for the next book. Well done, Glynn Stewart.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2018This book really surprised me. It's not often that a book turns out as good as the synopsis makes it sound. Jason is a great main characters. He's a relative weakling with no connections, but it's clear there's a lot of potential there.
I think the thing I liked most in this book is that Jason is set a very difficult task by someone in authority over him, but they don't just walk away after that. They keep an eye on him and provide support in appropriate ways. We don't hit deus ex machina levels of support, just enough to keep him going. Also, the people in different factions around him talk to him and everyone listens to each other. It was delightful. Jason does make his share of bone headed decisions, as it expected of a newbie, but he makes good decisions too. I loved it.
The world building was well done and very interesting. The characters around Jason are interesting as well. I'm certainly looking forward to the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2025This book is very different to the other Glynn Stewart books I have read, but I really enjoyed it. I’ll be buying book 2 to see what happens next.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2023There is little original in this book, but it is tolerably well-plotted and reads well. The characters are largely stock, but well-handled.
I would recommend it as a fair-ish remedy for boredom, and worth buying for that, but I doubt that I’ll long remember it or reread it.
It ranks somewhere above that twit Ng’s Pendulum Sun, but well below Zelazny’s Jack of Shadows.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2024I blew through this in about a day. I enjoyed his starship mage series so was really curious how his foray into the paranormal would be and all I can say is I just bought the second book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced Urban Fantasy
Jason Kilkenny, a nearly penniless and definitely weak Fae changeling moves to quiet and cold Calgary seeking to escape politics and live a mainly mortal life. Naturally he is soon dragged deeper and deeper into the very circles of power he had hoped to avoid. His selfless nature will earn him friends along the way who will prove invaluable allies in his unwanted but highly necessary quest - and he will need them merely to survive! Featuring Fae, Magi, Were Creatures, Vampires, Hags, The Wild Hunt, etcetera. This book is as clean, violent, political and magical as any of Glynn Stewart's lone efforts, and readers expecting his favourite tropes of the orphan with very special abilities rising out of nowhere will not be disappointed. The pace is faster than either Starship's Mage or Onset series, and needs to be with only 3 books in total. It also never leaves planet Earth, unless you count travelling to the mystical Between, which is another plane, but still the same planet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Efficace, même si un peu classique

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful World to Read About
This is the first novel I've read by this author, but I immediately lined up Changeling Blood Book 2. I enjoyed it so so much from start to finish. It has excellent world building - I really liked that it is set in the real world, Canada, and Calgary in particular, introducing a world that runs along side humanity's, so is relatable. Calgary, like certain cities in the world, is home to supernatural courts - animal shifters, vampires and Fae etc who each run their own courts and have a representative to the higher court that runs the city, led by a powerful magician. Into this, trying hard to keep a very low profile and just get a job and a place to live without any trouble, is the changeling (half fae, half human making him the bottom of the supernatural totem pole), is Jason Kilkenny.
Jason is a very likeable character and has the amusing flaws of an average young man. Jason is no super hero, and he desperately doesn't want to be, but he gets beaten up on a regular basis for his habit of not walking away from innocents in need. Which gets him embroiled in a major conspiracy going down in the city that will rock every court. The pacing is excellent and the character grows over the course of the story. I do love that he also tries to hold down a full time job as a courier and convince a cute girl to be his girlfriend - that whole scenario is amusing and really well written - as is the whole book. I absolutely loved it.
All the characters are interesting and the story has a few twists and turns, but is a thoroughly good read. I couldn't recommend it enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spannend, humorvoll, empfehlenswert
Wer ein Faible für Urban Fantasy hat, macht bei der Changling Serie nix falsch. Aber bloss nicht im Anschluss die Onset-serie des Autors lesen...von der werdet ihr enttäuscht sein. Ganz anderer Schreibstil.
