The Guild of the Cowry Catchers, a story of pirates and Panamindorah - Complete 5-Book Series Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 78 ratings

A tortured prince. A snarky assassin. An assignment that's about to land them in a world of trouble.

Gerard lost his birthright in his small island kingdom when he married the court minstrel. He fled to the only place that offered protection from his father and his vengeful local deity—the service of the High Priestess.

Unfortunately, his superior officer, Silveo, takes an instant disliking to Gerard. Silveo has a reputation for cruelty, cunning, and a biting wit. Rumors claim that he was once an assassin, who clawed his way to power from a childhood of poverty and abuse.

In spite of their differences, the Priestess insists that Gerard and Silveo cooperate to destroy the charismatic pirate, Gwain, and his mysterious organization, the Guild of the Cowry Catchers. Gwain has been killing off the Temple Police for years, and he seems likely to make a swift end of Gerard...if Silveo doesn't do it first.

This box-set is the complete epic fantasy adventure, including all 5 books. Gay romance, dragons, sassy anti-heroes, true love. Mature audiences only.

I first experienced Abby's world with the prophet of panamindorah and I recommend everyone read the prophet books first to familiarize yourself with the world. After finishing all of Abby's currently available content, I still want to know more about the world. I am waiting, somewhat patiently, for more stories, so I am pretty hooked. Anyway, to the point, in the Guild of the Cowry Catchers, Abby takes us to a very different, darker environment; the status quo is of discrimination in this corrupted caste society, which worships false deities who only desire complete obedience. How has this society devolved so far? How can anyone do anything to make their world better? Your perspective begins through Gerard's eyes. He provides a glimmer of hope that good can prevail with his unyielding sense of right and wrong. You will have to read to find out more, but the quotes in the beginning of each chapter are insightful and humorous, the characters are interesting, and the story doesn't disappoint. As other reviews have pointed out, the book is dark and has explicit content, so it is not suitable for kids.

I love Abigail Hilton’s writing. Her stories are so engaging they swallow your attention and leave you either reaching for the next book in the series immediately, or going through withdrawal wishing for more to the story.

Her characters are not black and white and have beautiful as well as imperfect qualities. You can’t always take what the heros think they know to be actual fact, which is great because it gives the character room to develop and it makes the story more interesting. Someone you may initially take to be a villain usually turns out to fall in more of a gray area. Good and evil deeds are sometimes about perspective and you will usually see more than one side as she tells the story.

The worlds that she builds are detailed and complex. They allow for so many more stories to be told with many other characters.

Basic ideas interesting, books kept you reading when actions were happening but too much time spent on romance (or should I say bromance), love scenes between Gerard and Silveo. If I'd wanted to read a romance novel, I would have purchased one.

Most of the negative reviews complain about the "unexpected" gay sex. They either complain saying that there needs to be a warning prior to purchase, or they complain about the relationship at all. So ... the description does say that there are gay relationships and it does say that it's for mature audiences only so I have no idea what the first group are complaining about. And I seriously have no patience for the second group. You don't need to be a gay man to read about a relationship between 2 men. I'm guessing the reviewer doesn't have feathers or a tail but can still read about where this is common place and yet can't wrap his head around the idea of a relationship between 2 men? Nuts. Expand your horizons. Put aside your preconceptions and bigotry.
Having said all that, I wish I could have given 5 stars but there was too much that l didn't like. It was really slow to get into. Silveo obviously is the anti-hero, but it takes way too long for Gerard to be much of a hero either. He goes from a naive cog in the wheel to maybe ok, to a full book dealing with internalized homophobia... too much. He's finally better later, but it was painful in parts. Through most of the series (and it's hard to just review these 5 without really reviewing the next group too), I would have given it a 3/5, but then it gets another star back for the various relationship - both romantic and with friends. They are complex and so well explored.
This won't be for everyone, but it's clear why the fans are so loyal. I'll keep reading what she writes next

I got this book for free, then forgot about it for a while. When I finally started to read it, I didn't remember anything about it and, frankly, wondered what in the world I had been thinking to download it at all. But I kept up with it since it was written well and I needed something to read. And then it sort of sucked me in. Yes, it does have its down-sides. It's full of slavery, gross social inequality, child prostitution, (non-graphic) rape -- you name something bad that can happen and it will most likely be in this book. It is full of more deus-ex-machina escapes than I have ever seen in 1 work of fiction. And then there's the fact that this is obviously not set on Earth, but is full of Earth names for animals since, it seems, there are foxes all over the universe and they'll always be called foxes. BUT the story is gripping. You care about what happen to the characters. You can't help but love Silveo, and Gerard is... well, he's inherently good in a world where almost no one is, so he's at least likeable. Mind you, when I got to the end of the book and it had a preview for the next book set in this world, I was not at all interested. Enough with the pain and torture, thanks. This books ends on an up note and there is a lot of good in it, but there's just as much darkness and pain and desperation that was palatable only because of the aforementioned amazing and improbable escapes. So, no, it's not perfect, but the 5 stars I've given it reflect how much I enjoyed the story and the characters.
