About the authors
Rosanne E. Lortz ("Rose") is a writer, editor, teacher, history-lover, and mom to four boys. She loves to read, sing, draw, compose, write, and create. Education is one of her passions, particularly a classical, liberal arts education. She has taught English composition and grammar, Latin, history, music, and various other subjects for fifteen years at both the elementary and secondary level and is currently an administrator at a classical Christian school.
Rose writes historical novels full of adventure, romance, and suspense. Her Pevensey Mysteries transpose stories from the Middle Ages into Regency Era romance/murder mysteries. Her newest series is the Allen Abbey Romances, three linked novellas set in Regency England.
Rose served on the board of the Historical Novel Society North America for four years and works to promote interest in historical novels. She enjoys reading and reviewing historical fiction, historical romance, historical mysteries, high fantasy, and some young adult and middle grade books at http://rosannelortz.com.
An avid reader, Lauren Gilbert has always dreamed of writing. She is a member of the Jane Austen Society of North America, and was a break-out speaker at the Annual General Meeting in Ft. Worth, TX is 2011. Lauren lives in Florida with her husband. HEYERWOOD: A Novel is her first book. A RATIONAL ATTACHMENT was recently released, and she is presently working on a non-fiction work.

Reader comment: “I feel like I know your characters and I miss them now that the book is finished.” Elizabeth P., FL
Debra cut her teeth on the Bookhouse Books, which created a nagging longing to live in a land of castles and wear flowing gowns and exquisite headdresses. Though life kept her busy, she was eventually able to do so vicariously through the characters of her books.
Her first published novel, The Companion of Lady Holmeshire, is set in early Victorian England. Emma, a former servant girl, is chosen as companion to The Countess of Holmeshire and dragged along into polite society where she is sure to receive a rude reception.
Debra's work-in-progress, For the Skylark, is on the back burner but simmering slowly. She has spent more time on the development and running of a multi-author blog, English Historical Fiction Authors. The group posts a daily article on British history and has a weekly historical fiction giveaway. History lovers join us with their morning tea at http://englishhistoryauthors.blogspot.com.
Shortly after the first anniversary of the blog, an author suggested the creation of a book composed of select posts. A year later, to celebrate the second anniversary on September 23, 2013, Castles, Customs, and Kings: True Tales by English Historical Fiction Authors, edited by Debra and the late M.M. Bennetts, was released. Volume II will be released on September 23, 2015, and we hope to continue the series.
You can chat with Debra about history and historical fiction and meet her author friends on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/212369672160560 and at her Goodreads group, Historical Info for Historical Fiction Readers.
Debra is the President of the M.M. Bennetts Award for Historical Fiction Association which honors the author of an outstanding novel each year with a $500 USD prize. Winners are announced at the annual Historical Novel Society Conference. Learn more at http://mmbaward.blogspot.com.
After having been an Army infantry officer leaping out of perfectly-functioning aircraft, a teacher of Crips & Bloods on a wagon train, and Chuck E. Cheese, adding 'author' to the list is almost anti-climactic. Yet here we are.
A native of dead-flat Illinois and now a permanent fixture in the Rocky Mountains (there's some culture-shock for you), I write mostly fantasy and sci-fi, despite making my high school English students scribble non-fiction essays until their brains bleed. Do as I say, not as I do.
Sitting alone in my library writing is about as splendid an activity as someone with Asperger Syndrome could wish. My beloved and long-suffering wife gets stuck in the living room with the basset hound more often than she'd wish, but at least the TV talks to her more than I do.
BRIMSTONE AND LILY, JASPER'S FOUL TONGUE, and JASPER'S MAGICK CORSET are the first 3 books in my Legacy Stone series. They are snarky seriocomic YA takes on traditional quest-lit. The idea started as 'swords-and-sorcery Huck Finn' and took off from there. They include a mind-bogglingly bizarre collection of things: shape-shifting swords, Civil War battles, magic cannonballs, combat pelicans, Captain Nemo's sub, kindly Arab terrorists, swimming trees, cyclopean ogres, zombies, lady ninjas, and poop monsters. BRIMSTONE AND LILY won the Bronze Medal in Sci-Fi/Fantasy at the 2010 Independent Publishers Book Awards.
I began as a playwright (have to make use of that theatre degree somehow), so I also have several books of plays out there. They've been produced in the U.S. and Europe. Nearly all of them are history-based: American Civil War, 17th century France, and 19th century American west. I cleverly managed to put a fight scene into every one of them.
My present addiction is Steampunk, both as author and performer. I teach Bartitsu (Sherlock Holmes' martial art, an actual Victorian discipline) at conventions. PARAGON OF THE ECCENTRIC, my prequel to Wells' WAR OF THE WORLDS, won the 2013 Colorado Gold writing contest and is finally available on Amazon.
I do write stories. In fact, "The Day the Earth Couldn't Stand Still," about Broadway musical-loving nanobots in the President's brain, won the Colorado Short Story Contest.
Six time BRAG Medallion Honoree, #1 Best-selling Historical Fantasy author Maria Grace has her PhD in Educational Psychology and is a 16-year veteran of the university classroom where she taught courses in human growth and development, learning, test development and counseling. None of which have anything to do with her undergraduate studies in economics/sociology/managerial studies/behavior sciences.
She pretends to be a mild-mannered writer/cat-lady, but most of her vacations require helmets and waivers or historical costumes, usually not at the same time.
She writes gas lamp fantasy, historical romance and non-fiction to help justify her research addiction.
Her books are available at all major online booksellers.

Had Anna been allowed to choose, she'd have become a professional time-traveller. No luck there, so instead she became a financial professional with two absorbing interests; history and writing. These days, Anna combines an exciting day-job with a large family and her writing endeavours. Plus she always finds the time to try out new recipes, chase down obscure rose bushes and initiate a home renovation scheme or two.
Anna has authored the acclaimed time travelling series The Graham Saga , set in 17th century Scotland and Maryland, as well as the equally acclaimed medieval series The King’s Greatest Enemy.
Anna has also published The Wanderer, a fast-paced contemporary romantic suspense trilogy with paranormal and time-slip ingredients. Her September 2020 release, His Castilian Hawk is a story of loyalty and love set against the complications of Edward I’s invasion of Wales in the late 13th century.
Her most recent release, The Whirlpools of Time , is a time travel romance set against the backdrop of brewing rebellion in the Scottish highlands.
All of Anna’s books have been awarded the IndieBRAG Medallion, she has several Historical Novel Society Editor’s Choices, and one of her books won the HNS Indie Award in 2015. She is also the proud recipient of several Reader’s Favorite medals as well as having won various Gold, Silver and Bronze Coffee Pot Book Club awards.

Beth von Staats is a history writer of both fiction and non-fiction short works. A life-long history enthusiast, Beth holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. She is the owner and administrator of Queen Anne Boleyn Historical Writers website, QueenAnneBoleyn.com.
Beth's interest in British History grew through the profound influence of her Welsh grandparents, both of whom desired she learn of her family cultural heritage. Her most pronounced interest lies with the men and women who drove the course of events and/or who were most poignantly impacted by the English Henrician and Protestant Reformations, as well as the Tudor Dynasty of English and Welsh History in general.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2016Great book for English history lovers. Excellently researched. The author really knows "her stuff." Comes in two volumes.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2015This is a long book, and worth every penny! It's a collection of articles about the history of the United Kingdom, in more or less chronological order.
I admit to having not read all of them yet ~ I'd read loads, then had a quick look and discovered I was only at 28%, so after that I dipped in and out, depending on the subject of the article. There's so much to choose from: tales of conquests, information about the life of the common person of the time (I loved the mediaeval ones), to discussion ~ who was the most evil, Richard III or Henry Tudor? Some have more information than others, some are of speciality interest and others more general; if you're a history addict like me, it's a must-buy!
As with all anthologies the quality of the articles varied, but every single one was well put together and worthy of inclusion. I liked those by Rosanne Lortz, Judith Arnopp, Debra Brown, Katherine Ashe and one of my favourite authors, Deborah Swift (click link for my reviews of her books), best, along with a few others; they were the names that sprang immediately to mind.
I read the first part on a long train journey, and noted down pieces I'd particularly liked: one about Athelstan, another on William Wallace by Rosanne Lortz, the Monarchy series by Debra Brown, Judith Arnopp's William II and Stephen and Matilda, all of Katherine Ashe's (trying to read my scribble here!), and I also loved the foreward, 'Falling in love with England and its history', by Stephanie Cowell.
There was only one aspect on which I was not so keen, which was the plugging of the authors' books in some of the articles. I think an Amazon link to the relevant book at the end of the article would have been a better idea, less intrusive and possibly more effective. There is a list of novels by each author at the front, too, for reference.
This is really a terrific book to keep for reference, or just to dip into now and again when you fancy reading something short; I know I will be reading more of it in days to come, and probably looking at my favourite articles over again. I liked that some of the articles named their sources, too, as this is so useful for anyone who is doing research.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2018Love these stories! A must for any anglophile!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2015This beefy volume of articles about British history, ranging from pre-Roman to 20th century, is drawn from the fabulous English Historical Fiction Authors blog.
I love books that come from blogs. At first blush, it seems counter-intuitive, buying a book with content from a free blog, but this volume proves how awesome the idea is.
At close to 600 pages, this book anthologizes a whole year's content from nearly fifty authors, compiling their intriguing blog posts in chronological order. It's a welcoming format: I can dip into and out at my leisure, and a book like this begs that kind of languid reading.
In her introduction, Brown writes this volume is meant to evoke "the soul of the past with personal stories and strange happenings", and it does just that. Each piece has a warm, conversational tone (so those expecting something deeply academic should look elsewhere). What I most enjoyed about these pieces is that they make up a love letter to the genre of historical fiction, as well as a behind-the-curtain expose of hard work and miraculous, plot-affirming surprises that bolster writers.
It is that tone, excited and nerdy, that hooked me and kept me paging through these pieces. Even for eras I'm not typically fascinated by, there were still essays that intrigued me (like Nancy Bilyeau's article on Mary Shipton, Tudor prophetess).
The group of participating authors is impressive; some of the names that I'm familiar with include Sandra Byrd, Anna Belfrage, Nancy Bilyeau, Patricia Bracewell, Stephanie Cowell, Christy English, and Deborah Swift. (You can see a complete list of participating authors at the blog.)
Fans of British historical fiction will want this book; it's a bit like the extras on a DVD, loaded with trivia that helped me have a better sense of life for the characters of many of the books I love to read. Keep bedside or even loaded on your smartphone for when you need a few minutes of reading (and be prepared to look up and see an hour or two has passed!).

4.0 out of 5 stars I have the first book which I enjoyed very much
I have the first book which I enjoyed very much. Some of the essays in this one are very good but I found that the authors seemed to specialize in the medieval period and that gets old very fast. It is a good book to have by the bed to dip into every now and then but not the kind of book to sit down and read through.
