For two years, the Castle Federation and the Alliance of Free Stars have stood against Marshal James Walkingstick of the Terran Commonwealth and his mission of conquest. Battles have been won and lost, worlds have died, and soldiers like Admiral Kyle Roberts have been forged on the anvil of war.

But the Alliance cannot win. The Commonwealth has more worlds, more ships, more soldiers. They claim their victory is inevitable. That history is on their side.

Refusing to accept the Commonwealth's future, the Alliance embarks on a do-or-die mission to end the war in one strike. If Kyle Roberts's plan works, the Commonwealth will break.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Castle Federation - and Space Carrier Avalon - is straight up military SF in the finest tradition. [...] This series has enough pew-pew to scratch the itch for action and enough characterization to make you care about who gets killed."

- Nathan Lowell, author of the Solar Clipper series

"Space Carrier Avalon was a fast-moving space adventure story, with plenty of twists and turns and some stunning action sequences, and Stellar Fox continues in the same vein, but manages to still surprise. [...] I'm already looking forward to the next book to come!"

- Richard Tongue, Author of the Battlecruiser Alamo series

I have started a number of book series. This is one of the few I have finished. The characters seem very real and it was easy to be concerned about them.

It's sci-fi and set in the 2,700's. Faster-than-light was solved centuries ago and man has colonized a large number of star systems in the galaxy. There are 2 main superpowers, a couple of smaller powers and a bunch of single systems trying to be independent. The larger of the 2 superpowers, The Commonwealth, has waged a war upon the second power, The Alliance, trying to unify all humanity. Familiar?

The storyline follows the career of Kyle Roberts of the Alliance from a fighter pilot to Admiral and chief strategist of their Navy. Like many sci-fi books, the issues of racism, sexism, ageism have been settled long ago. Now it is a quest for power and a people's desire to be free.

It is a great story, well written and the relationships between the characters feel real.

We find closure in the war, though not without cost. The splitting of viewpoints (time and locale) was done professionally, and learning a bit more about Marshal Walkingstick (the main adversary) was very welcome. I enjoyed the glimpses into the "foreign" cultures of the Alliance in previous books, and while I may have wished more, I admit it would have been a distraction in this book. And getting to know a villain who is not evil, but you still hate, is refreshing indeed. A good finish to a GOOD SERIES!

This series has managed to bring new elements into each book in the series: story lines that feel new, not just reworked copies of the original book in the series; new characters; and of course, new challenges for the team. While the stories all have space warfare at their core, enough is new in each book, and key players do die in battle, that the reader remains engaged.

What a grand 6 book space opera. One of Glynn’s best. Is has it all, massive space warfare, politics, intrigue, and the human side as well. From the beginning of the Alliance’s war with the more powerful Terran commonwealth thru the to the end. What a great story.

Good series, needs to stop using the F word. A great writer doesn’t need to use that kind of language. If that was taken out Glynn Stewart would be an outstanding writer

Glynn Stewart put together one of the very few series which can successfully stand in the same library as David Weber' s Honor Universe. Weber sometimes sneaks through in the use of names like Basilisk and Manticore!

Kyle Roberts is a wonderful protagonist, showing the right proportion of military acumen and human frailty. He moves through the roles of mid-level space force officer to Navy Vice Admiral with aplomb and professionalism, performing in each at least one spectacular feat of command prowess, which move him up the ranks but makes political enemies as well.

The author has avoided the use of strange aliens in favor of an all human universe which may be typical several centuries hence. He has, of course, taken the usual liberties with the laws of physics, but that's inevitable. Earth, surprisingly, is the bad guy, trying to subjugate the entire known universe to it's hegemony by force. Space militarists will find a lot of space fleet action, but it's the people and the politics which make these books stand out.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fine end to an excellent series
Reviewed in Canada on March 14, 2018
This is an excellent last book in the series. The plot is action-packed, and suspenseful.

One thing I should mention about the series in general is that I really like how much attention to detail was put into logistics and technology. In particular, Alcubierre warp drive is actually a theoretically-possible drive. It has huge problems, which are mentioned, and sometimes actually used as plot devices in the story. Most science fiction authors do not put this level of thought into their FTL drives. Significant thought was also put into the logistics of warfare, and the constraints this lead to in what it is possible for the various characters to actually do. Fuel can run out, exotic matter coils can break or be destroyed by enemy fire, starfighters can't carry very many missiles, and it takes time for missile salvos to reach the enemy, or for theirs to reach you. Light takes time to get to you, unless your quantum-entanglement communication is in place and working correctly.

There are a few inconsistencies in this particular book about things like the maritial status of the head of the Unification Committee, but really, not a huge issue.

I find myself wanting to know more about what happened in the Terran Commonwealth after the wars between the Commonwealth and everyone else ended. The situation in the Terran Commonwealth at the end of the book is poetic justice, though Walkingstick seems to have managed to be a karma houdini, and I find myself feeling ambivalent because there's a lot of decent people in the system that just got smashed, even if the people in charge, and the system as a whole, richly deserved its smashing.

As an antagonist nation, the Commonwealth is more interesting than many in fiction, because the people are shown as human beings, most of whom are not monsters. It is also interesting because it is in many ways fairly admirable. It is an oversize representative democracy. If it would kick its bad habit of trying to annex everyone else, and the related bad habits of crushing independence movements with really nasty methods and having certain officers who lose their tempers and commit atrocities, it would be downright good.

Operation Medusa is the final book in the Castle Federation series. I like Glynn Stewart’s books and he does Sci-Fi well. This book was just as good as every other book in the series and did not disappoint. As always, I think the writing delivers a good balance between the pace and depth of the story which keeps me interested in the characters and their fate. I would certainly recommend.
Note: I received a free electronic copy in exchange for an unbiased review (but liked it enough to buy a copy anyway)
