The Crown of Stones: Magic-Scars Kindle Edition
The price of his magic, and his addition, have never been higher.
Struggling to reconcile the man he once was, with the man prison made him, Ian Troy emerges from captivity to an unfamiliar world gripped with fear. In the wake of his fall, those he cares for suffered their own grim fates, leaving friends endangered and scattered. His old enemy, Draken of Langor, seized control of Mirra’kelan and named himself High King. Draken’s brutal reign sparked a desperate rebellion that Ian now finds himself a part of. His one task: recover and repair the Crown of Stones, in hopes it will tip the balance in their brewing revolution.
As Ian strives to regain what was lost, the magic-scars streaking his body multiply faster. Searching for a cause, and the truth behind his link to the Crown of Stones, leads him to uncover shocking secrets buried for generations beneath the sand. To become the weapon the resistance needs, Ian must claim his magical inheritance. But can he curb the destructive appetite that comes with it?
The saga of Ian Troy continues in Magic-Scars, the second installment in C. L. Schneider’s riveting epic fantasy trilogy, The Crown of Stones.

About the author

Born in a small Kansas town on the Missouri river, C.L. Schneider grew up in a house of avid readers and overflowing bookshelves. Her first full-length novel took shape while she was still in high school, on a typewriter in her parent's living room. Though Schneider has been writing all of her life, Magic-Price (the award-winning first installment in The Crown of Stones Trilogy) was her first published novel.
While her main focus is epic and urban fantasy for adults, she dabbles in all areas of speculative fiction. Her stories tend to be dark, conflict-laden tales full of magic and mystery, action and intrigue, antiheroes and villains, monsters and myths, friendship, love, loss and sacrifice—with enough twists to give you whiplash.

5 out of 5 stars
The story The Crown of Stones: Magic-Scars by C.L. Schneider is an epic fantasy book. This is the second installment of The Crown of Stones trilogy. Ian Troy has been captured by his old enemy, King Draken of Langor. He has been tortured and drugged, robbed of his will, his memories, and his magic. He is rescued and as his body heals and rids itself of the drug he was given, he realizes that he has returned to an unfamiliar world gripped in fear. Since he has last seen them, those he cared for were left to their own fates. Ian is struggling to reconcile the man he has become, with the man he once was. He strives to understand the growing number of magic-scars adorning his body and he searches for the truth behind his link to the Crown of Stones. He soon uncovers secrets that have been buried for generations and finds to become the weapon the resistance needs, he must assume responsibility for his magical inheritance.
This is an amazing second book in The Crown of Stones series. The story is told from Ian Troy’s POV. As in the last book, through memories and flashbacks, Ian starts to remember what he did while he was held a prisoner and of his life before as well. He blames himself for things that he has done while in captivity. The feel of Ian’s character has changed a bit. This is due to his captivity and the drug that he was on constantly. Ian is such a likable character and I can say that some of the things that happen to him saddened me. He has many friends and acquaintances who help him and believe that any hope they have of freedom lies with him. The other character that I really enjoy in this series is Malaq. He plays a major part in both books one and two. Both he and Ian banter back and forth which makes for some funny conversations.
This is truly a fast-paced, action-packed, magical journey through a world that is in fear and needs rescuing. There are battle scenes and adult situations that include hot, love scenes. This would be a book recommended for those 18 years and older.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2015Loved this as much as the first book. Can't wait for the next one and where it takes us. Some of the best and descriptive writing ever and you really get to know the characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2024"The Crown of Stones: Magic-Scars" is just as fantastic of a read as Book 1 of the trilogy was! It ups the tension of the overall story, while telling a story within itself.
My sole complaint about the book is that it needed to be edited better before publication. There are a number of typos and other errors in the text that I noticed. However, the story is simply so compelling that I overlooked them and just kept on reading.
I picked up this entire trilogy at the same time. So, luckily, I already have Book 3 to dive right into. Given how much I have enjoyed Books 1 and 2, I can't wait to read Book 3!
Despite the editing issues, I still have to grant this book 5-stars. I highly recommend reading "The Crown of Stones: Magic-Scars"!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2017The Crown of Stones: Magic- Scars is the second book in the series by C.L. Schneider. While this is not my normal genre, I have to say that I again was still able to get lost in this amazing book by an amazing author with the ability to make me get lost in a book from the very first word to the very last word. What I liked even more about the book was it didn’t start off right where the last one did, it was two years pass where the first book finished. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy because the world C.L. Schneider created is just utterly wonderful to read.
Ian Troy has been taken by King Draken and placed in prison. He was beaten and drugged but worse of it all is his magic and will is used to do some very nasty and unthinkable things. Finally he is rescued, and the drug is slowly leaving his body he again is living in a world filled with fear. King Draken has taken control of the realms and now is High Kind. He continues to try to have power of Ian while Ian is trying to learn and discover the man that he used to be before he was taken. He wants to discover the power he has but his addiction to who he was before is also taken over.
Being to lose myself in a genre that I normally don’t like says something to me, not just about the book but that an author can take someone like me, and grabbing my attention. I am again left wanting and needing to read more in this series. I love that I can close my eyes and see the world that was created because the attention to detail is just amazing. Nothing overdone, just prefect to create this fantasy world for us readers to get lost on over and over again. I give this book 5 stars and fell even more in love with this story then I did the first one, this series is just mind blowing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stunning Follow Up.
Cindy L Schneider ratchets up the drama action and intrigue in this awesome book. We learn even more about magic wielder, Ian Troy as we are observers in his loves, battles and losses. Every scene is a triumph of narrative. The storyline had me on the edge of my seat. A masterpiece of modern fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars a story that rivals the best books in the fantasy genre
When Ian Troy awakes, he is no longer himself. His memories have gone, his energy has gone, and—even worse—his magic has gone. Drugged into submission, he has been suffering in a Langorian prison for more than two years. Rescued by Malaq and taken into hiding by Captain Krillos, Troy must learn to become the man he was in order to stem the flow of destruction from Mirra’kelan’s High King, Draken. But Troy is not the same man: he is altered, more troubled than before, more destructive than ever. What he uncovers is a history that will shatter the very fabric of his being, and a future with the potential to destroy everything he has ever known.
The Crown of Stones: Magic-Scars, by C. L. Schneider, is the second installment of her trilogy of fantasy novels. It continues the story of Ian Troy, a once-proud Shinree soldier and magic caster. It is one of the best books I’ve read in a long, long time. Magic-Scars crisscrosses the broad and believable world of Mirra’kelan, taking us back and forward in time to reveal a tortured past and an even more tortuous future. It’s a read filled with tension that is palpable, humor that made me laugh out loud, and sex that would put some erotica authors to shame. The cast of characters go beyond Ian Troy: Malaq and Jarryd return to play huge parts in the story; Jillyan is a seductive Queen; Sienn and Lirih are magic casters who provide delightful sub-plots.
I try to balance each review by pointing out negatives, but I’m hard pushed to find many in Magic-Scars. I noticed a few minor spelling errors that had slipped through the editing process but hey, isn’t that the case with every book ever written? Ian Troy is a flawed character, which makes him enthralling, but sometimes his flaws (basically, his single-minded determination to do what he wants regardless of the risk) puts his friends and those who rely on him the most, in great danger. While that can be frustrating to read it’s not really a negative aspect of the story, or plot, or writing, but more a wish that Ian Troy would think a little more clearly about his actions. I guess that means Schneider has created an awesome character, and likeable sub-characters, that I’ve become heavily invested in, which can’t be a bad thing. Put these characters in life-and-death situations in a world that’s vivid and exciting, and what we have is a story that rivals the best books in the fantasy genre.
Book one in this series, Magic-Price, was great, but Magic-Scars is fantastic, and it’s not often a sequel out-does the first book. Of course, all this does is put pressure on Schneider to produce something even more superior with the final installment. I’m sure I won’t be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great second entry!
It is a time of oppression. A bleakness which begins to foster bonds & alliances among the downtrodden. A powerful artifact & an imprisoned, beaten suppressed magic user become a hope.
Excellent sequel! Mystery & action aplenty! Great characters & series!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
4 Stars
Magic Scars is the second book in The Crown of Stone Series by C.L Schneider. As with the first book, this is an action-packed high fantasy- with adventure, magic, tension, drama, originality, brilliant world building, suspense, and so much more. I loved the first book, and couldn’t wait to continue the series, reading all three books pretty much back to back.
The story starts off a couple of years after the events in book one. Ian Troy had been imprisoned, tortured, and drugged to suppress his magic. He is ‘battle-scared’, both physically and mentally. The world he returns to hasn’t fared much better than him- suffering at the hands of the new High King. Ian is the only hope of freeing the people, and so there is much at stake. He carries a heavy burden of responsibility but struggles to piece his life back together again after what happened. What about The Crown of Stones- and what of his connection to it? His addiction to magic is also a problem. So, he starts searching for the answers he needs- delving into the past to find them, where he uncovers ancient secrets that have shocking implications, not just for him, but for his entire race. What price will the magic cost him this time- and will he find the resolutions he is looking for?
Again, this is pretty dark and heavy- and I was left really feeling for Ian and what he had been through, and what was still left for him to endure. Ms. Schneider world building skills are really superb, with so much attention to detail that it seemed so realistic and believable.
This fantastic series is really epic, and oh so intriguing. I very much enjoyed Ms. Schneider’s unique and very imaginative adventure. There are still a lot of threads left to tie up- but don’t worry everything comes together in the next book- Magic Borne (Book Three), which is available now to read.
I really recommend this book/series to anyone who loves an epic, action-packed fantasy!
Thank you, Ms. Schneider!

5.0 out of 5 stars a series for readers who love their fantasy epic and sumptuous.
Book two of the Crown of Stones trilogy, this excellent epic fantasy series goes from strength to strength as the anti-hero, Troy, is rescued from the brutality of the prison he has languished in for two years. With the same Witcher vibes as contained in book one, this is a powerful read of political intrigue and machination, magical atrocities, and misplaced loyalties that lead to despair and destruction.
Superbly written, the plot is twisting and complex and it demands you pay attention. Pulling no punches, the author will sacrifice characters – even much-loved ones – to the cruel whims of fate. Do not get attached to anyone, is my advice to any reader going into this trilogy.
Reminiscent of the Shannara Chronicles and the Wheel of Time, this is a series for readers who love their fantasy epic and sumptuous.
