Cullen Year One (Scott Cullen Collected Editions Book 1) Kindle Edition
GHOST IN THE MACHINE
Think you're safe online? Think again.
DC Scott Cullen of Lothian and Borders CID has only been in the job three months. Young, eager to please and desperate to do good. So a missing persons case should be an easy case to solve.
Fresh from a messy divorce, Caroline Adamson’s future is finally looking up. Her son seems happy and she’s dating again. Trouble is, Cullen can’t find Caroline or the man she met on Schoolbook, the latest social network taking Edinburgh by storm.
When Caroline’s mutilated body is found, Edinburgh faces the reality of a serial killer hunting young women. The discovery of a second, connected victim leads DI Brian Bain to put Caroline’s ex-husband in the frame.
Cullen isn’t so sure and is determined that the right person faces justice. As things take a personal turn, Cullen must look closer to home for the answer — before it’s too late.
DEVIL IN THE DETAIL
A missing schoolgirl. A haunted detective. A dark mystery.
Fresh from a case that almost broke him, DC Scott Cullen struggles to get over a tragedy, personal and professional. And the best way to cope is to get his head down and ignore it. Of course. When Mandy Gibson, a young disabled girl, goes missing in the affluent East Lothian town of Garleton, Cullen helps the local cops find her before the worst happens. Too late.
As Cullen tries to solve a murder, he finds himself caught in the cross-fire of competitive police politics. The heartbroken parents blame young Jamie Cook, a tearaway teen with a history of run-ins with the police. But where is he? Could Mandy’s death have anything to do with both families belonging to a secretive religious cult?
The only way for Cullen to catch the murderer is by finding out the darkest secrets of this close-knit community, one family at a time.
FIRE IN THE BLOOD
A body soaked in whisky. A family with secrets to hide.
DC Scott Cullen isn’t so much disillusioned with the police force but his insufferable boss, DI Bain. Is it personal?
When the owner of Dunpender Distillery opens a cask of whisky for a special edition, he finds more than a single malt. The barrel contains the body of a man, mangled and unidentifiable.
Now, as the rest of the team focus on bigger cases, Cullen is lead investigator of not one but two decades-old cases. Both men went missing within weeks of each other around the time the barrel was filled twenty years ago. Their bodies were never found.
As Cullen steps back in time to work out what happened, he battles through tales of family loyalties, lies and professional rivalries. Before Cullen can work out who the killer is, he needs to know whose body is in the barrel…
And whether the murderer will strike again.
4) STAB IN THE DARK
A dead body in a a twisted car. A detective torn in two.
DC Scott Cullen likes to play hard and fast with the rules. While it might antagonise his colleagues and superiors, it gets results. With fears over a forthcoming restructure, things aren’t looking good for him, especially when his personal life begins to crumble.
Still, the body of a young man found in a totalled car at the foot of a West Lothian shale bing looks like a straightforward case. But when that accidental death turns into two undeniable murders, Cullen is caught in the risky crossfire of several investigations.
He takes a stab in the dark as things become unexpectedly too personal for comfort. Can he catch the killer or were his colleagues right about him all along?

- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2020Good tight plotting and likeable characters. A few of the second tier people are a bit overly broad to be completely believable, but that's a minor quibble. I read all four books in five days...what else needs to be said?
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2017I enjoyed these books and found Cullen preferable to other Scottish detectives in his moods. They were good to have on my Kindle app for reading when I found myself waiting.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2014Very real, book, story, characters. I felt like I had entered another world involving a maturing young police officer the drama in and surrounding him. I was pleased to read the books in order and keep up with the story. I will continue to follow Ed James and all he writes. When you want to feel a place total immersion helps, I felt totally immersed into East Lothian Scotland and wanted to know more both about the people, location and lives. Well done.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2015Anyone who likes English police procedurals and enjoys Ian Rankin, Jack and John Harvey, the Morse books etc., will find this author an excellent read. His characterisation is superb-we have all met or know these people and his plots are plausible. I cannot recommend him highly enough and have already pre-ordered his sixth volume in the series. May Ed James have a long and fruitful career. A MUST READ AUTHOR.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2015The books are predictable in the sense that Cullen is the only one to solve the case and constantly moans about how he is not recognised for how brilliant. Oh yes, he's also a maverick!!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2014Ed James Year One reads like a made for TV series. The hero's persistence in separating the wheat from the chaff in an investigation is admirable, albeit he displeases a very well drawn Bain, a particularly odious villain. I enjoyed, even got addicted to the drama. The comments on football and the music scene were beyond me but that did mot deter from the enjoyment.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2017Glad to have found this author. Good reads fir those of us who like murder mystery. Another UK worthy find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cullen Year One
Really cracking books in this Set. Detective Scott Cullen, the young maverick detective, overlooked for promotion, despite his genius at following clues and bring home the results. Ed James gas developed a great character here. Sizzling reading on all counts.

A fantastic book as always, I was really gunning for DC Cullen to get things right as he always does. Only one problem I couldn't put the bloody book down and I need my sleep in my job, trucks don't drive them selfs. Lol.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant
Recently discovered Ed James' DC Scott Cullen and have devoured them all since downloading them onto my Kindle.
They are brilliant. Set in Edinburgh à la Rebus and with characterisation worthy of Stuart Macbride and Peter Robinson.
Pity he hasn't been snapped up by an old-school (i.e., paper) publisher as I want some of my family to read 'em but they don't 'do' ebooks sadly.
Just wait till someone snaps up the TV rights -- the shows'll be brilliant.
