About the author

Carmen Jenner is a USA Today and international bestselling author.
A hardcore red lipstick addict and a romantic at heart, Carmen enjoys books—duh!—long walks through Sephora, tattooed boys, and eyeliner so sharp it could kill a man. She lives in small-town, Australia, where she wrangles her two children, a French Bulldog named Busy, her Jungle Jag Python named Bunny, and her very own manchild.
Carmen always gives her characters the HEA they deserve, but not before ruining their lives completely first … because what’s a happily ever after without a little torture?

“You sleep in Grumpy Cat pajamas?”
“So?”
“Oh, baby. You really are a crazy cat lady.”
“Don’t call me baby; I’m not your baby. And so I like cats. So what?...”

“Are you still going to this wedding, or can I eat your cake?” I mean for that to come out nothing like it sounds, but of course because apparently I’m now a teenage horn bag, it comes out low and sounds just like cake is a metaphor for her grumpy cat.”
I opened my review with some of the delightful saucy banter between our hero, Leo Nass and our heroine Poppy Porter. I do not read Rom-Com regularly, but I am open to any well-done book in the romance genre. "Cake" is a well written delight of a hot summertime fun read. It’s entertainment value is equal to any romantic comedy movie and that speaks volumes for this writer who is actually new to me.
I now have another writer that I can add to my list when I need to search for lighter fare between the dark, complex and heavy themed writing I am wont to read. The darker, suspenseful, more challenging and erudite romances are more my jam. Sometimes though…I need a break from living in my head. A state of being brought on by some of these reads. I need a happy romance…the stuff of women’s modern-day fairy tales.
I think some of us have this romance “bone” or “gene” that we are born with and we need to give it its dose of HEAs for the sake of our mental health and pure relaxation. It seems when everything in life goes wrong…a romance like this always ends right-side up!!!Ahhhh!!!
Carmen Jenner writes fluidly and effortlessly with engaging description and likeable characters. There were surprise plot points and twists. I loved the overall shape of the story with the prolonged climax and super messy denouement. Sounds like I’m describing sex…Ha-Ha!!! And… Ms. Jenner is funny. Her humor was spot on…it was sexy, flirty and splendidly sarcastic.
The read is not one dimensional while it was romantic and fun, Poppy did have some pain to process through as her best friend/ former best friend allegedly began a relationship with her ex fiancé. Poppy and her ex were together for years. Her best friend and ex were together only for a few months and now they were getting married. Poppy not only had to assist in planning the destination wedding, but also was asked to be the maid of honor.
Leo Nass is her "frenemy" and also the best man in the wedding. The sparks fly whenever these two get together and it is delightful to read. The reader can feel the "tug and pull" dynamic of their relationship. Leo is described as a beautiful, genetically gifted, consummate ladies’ man who lives the life in the fast lane. His reputation as a master manwhore proceeds him as a rule.
Poppy is both attracted and repelled at the same time. I love that she is stubborn. I love that she is skeptical. She is also generous with her time and her forgiveness. Oh… and she loves all kinds of cake. For that matter, Leo does as well.
There is quite a lot of story, laughs, ooh and…hot, hot, hotness. Don’t forget the hotness!!! It happens and it is as delicious as the cake!!! 😋
So grab "Cake"; grab a cold glass of your favorite beverage…iced tea, wine, a Frappuccino etc... and be prepared to laugh…cry for laughing; and have your heart and spirits lifted…gotta feed that “romance bone” with which you were born. You might even crave a cupcake or a piece of cake after you finish. Maybe even share it with that special someone?

Carmen is a new to me author. Once I saw the Cake cover I was completely enamored with it. It's not your typical romance cover so it stands out and I absolutely love it. The synopsis sounded like the kind of afternoon read you grab a pint and a spoon with, curl up somewhere cozy and have a good laugh with. It didn't disappoint. Cake was a fun, quick, laugh out loud RomCom with a dash of angst and a whole lot of sass.
Poppy was engaged to Chase. Chase is engaged to Poppy's ex-best friend Claire. Leo, Leo is Chase's best friend, the person Poppy loathes above all else and her long time childhood frenemy. He is the gum she can't get off her shoe or out of her hair. But when she finds her self helping plan her ex-fiance and ex-best friend's wedding to save her wedding planner career, she may soon find an ally in Leo.
I had so much fun with Cake. Poppy aka PopTart and Leo aka Nass the Ass were perfection together. Whether they were fighting or sharing a more tender moment, they kept you laughing and wondering how they never hooked up before. They are those friends you watch and the passion is so intense you can't fathom how they don't see what every one else does. They are so busy hating and antagonizing each other they are blind to what's right in front of them. But while they figure it out its definitely a fun spectator sport to watch the fireworks.
There were a couple times hearing Poppy tell Leo she hated him got a little old. There wasn't anything surprising or unpredictable about the story its self. Pretty typical Enemies to Lovers. But all the chaos that surrounds Poppy and Leo finally figuring it out makes it well worth it. That and all the snort laughing you'll do from the snark that gets thrown between these two. If you enjoy a good RomCom and are looking for a quick read to get lost in for a couple hours, grab Cake. You will love Poppy and Leo's story.

I freaking LOVED Poppy. She was hilarious and totally my kindof girl. Ms. Jenner had me rooting for Poppy's happily ever after from the first chapter. And I will be honest, I REALLY wanted there to be a bigger falling out with Chase and Claire, they both totally deserved worse (but then, I might just be that vengeful)... Anyway... back to Poppy, man, what a confident woman and she totally owned who she was, and I LOVED how quick witted she was. She totally handled her own with Leo.
Leo, I actually really came to love his character. I think he was just this big loveable teddy bear and didn't know what to do with himself when he found himself in love. I will say, that there was a part in this book that I had a bit of an issue with, but it was TOTALLY a gray area there and honestly, they weren't together and NO feelings were discussed so... I was totally able to get over that, plus once he figured out that he had feelings for "Poptart" he didn't stray so, I was able to move to love his character :)
This book was Hilarious. The banter and the antics with these two characters were a riot and man there was a total wrench thrown in their happily ever after I totally did NOT see coming, and for that I cursed the author, but I had to give her props, because she had me so into this book I had forgotten the little detail (you will need to just read this book to find out what I am talking about). Then everything was wrapped up in a happily ever after... and gives me a new appreciation for cake :)
Looking forward to more from author Carmen Jenner

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAnother fully enjoyable read about Poppy and Leo.
A lot of banter between them both which was funny to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, sweet, sexy and a whole lot of funny!!!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCarmen Jenner is one phenomenal writer and her ability to write romance in tropes from motorcycle clubs, small towns, war heroes, rock stars and sports goes to show how freakishly talented this lady is. But her latest release Cake - a romcom that will have you laughing out loud, scoffing at the words on the page and your jaw dropping more than once - is one of her best books yet. Poppy and Leo are two of the most hilarious, loveable and endearing characters you will ever meet.
I was hooked on this book from the moment Carmen dropped the first hints and from the fabulous teasers, the incredible cover by comic artist Yehuda Devir and a Valentine’s Day love note that had me laughing at loud (see here: http://www.truestorybookblog.com/2018/02/10/love-notes-leo-to-poppy-cake-by-carmen-jenner/), I knew that this would be a book that would blow me away. Cmon, I didn’t create the hashtags #LovingLeo and #GiveMeCake 🍰 for nothing 😉 And I was not wrong. Leo Nass earns his moniker #NassTheAss for all the shocking things he says and does. And yet, he is so witty, so sexy and so sweet that you won’t be able to help but fall in love with him too!! And Poppy Porter - she is one exceptional lady who takes no crap from anyone (least of all Leo) and the way she puts others before herself is so incredibly sweet and kind that even though you’ll think she’s insane for doing so (hello, she’s the maid of honour at her ex-best friend’s and ex-fiancé’s wedding 😮😮😮), you can’t help but admire her tenacity and confidence.
Cake is an awesome enemies-to-lovers romcom that should rocket up everyone’s to read list. You will devour this book so quickly because it is THAT good!! And when Leo looks like Chris Hemsworth and Poppy gives this man a run for her money, you just have to read what happens!!! One of my top reads of 2018 for sure!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars If you need a laugh and a pick me up, this book is for you.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThoroughly entertaining story. Leo and Poppy have been hating on each other for years. He’s always around to torture her somehow. Their banter is witty and I found myself laughing continuously. Well written story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great read from this author
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI must say, I feel bad for Poppy. She certainly put up with a lot more than I think I would. The calamity of errors that followed her around, I think, would have done me in. I would have curled up in a ball and not faced the world again, but Poppy just bounced back and kept on going.
And Leo, well, I don't know what to say about him. Poppy's name for him is so appropriate, but I have to give it to him, he treated Poppy a lot better than her ex obviously did, and Leo and Poppy couldn't stand each other.
Another great read from this author that had me laughing at times.
