The Kinsey Scale: A College M/M Friends To Lovers Romance (Campus Connections Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 74 ratings

Forced roommates, fake boyfriends, fierce attraction, and a secret or two… are they fooling themselves or falling in love?

Life is good for Eric Brown, a happily single theater major with a great group of friends. But then Will Butler—fellow senior, co-RA, and the cutest guy Eric’s ever seen—walks into his dorm. Will has a sweetheart he sees off campus—a minor disappointment that becomes a major problem when a housing shortage causes Will and Eric to become roommates, and Eric is forced to witness Will’s hotness day in and day out. He persuades his ex-boyfriend to pretend they’re still together in a vain attempt to protect himself, but it doesn’t save Eric from losing his heart.

Will Butler has never believed in himself. Although he’s loved music since childhood, he’s never seriously considered pursuing it. Then he and Eric Brown become roommates, and everything changes. Eric believes in Will and his talent. He’s also gorgeous and playful and fast becoming Will’s best friend. And that’s not good, because Will is hiding some big things, not only from Eric, but from himself.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Elliott delivers on the angst, the fluff, the unrequited crush, the sexual tension, the BIG reveal, and the bedroom gymnastics in just the right doses to make The Kinsey Scale an entertaining friends-to-lovers romance.
I'm delighted this is the first book in the Campus Connections series because it means there's more angsty deliciousness to come and I cannot wait.
- Wicked Reads

Very enjoyable, a light, sweet, quick read, and definitely recommended. Can hardly wait for the next book in this series.
- My Fiction Nook

... it's a breezy, slow burn romance that turns unexpected friends into lovers. For fans of New Adult, you'll find a very sweet story with a side of coming out.
- Joyfully Jay LGBTQ Romance Reviews

This was a slightly slow burn story that had so much packed in. Friendship, falling in love, hurt feelings, and just about everything in between.
CJane Elliott is a new-to-me author that I really enjoyed discovering!
- Bayou Book Junkie

I really liked this! I thought the characters were great and though I sometimes felt like they were missing the boat by just not TALKING I could kinda understand it given their respective ages.
I liked the smexy times (though I wish there were more) and really felt the HEA was worth the time invested. Highly enjoyable!

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

In an unusual for me move, I re-read the blurb prior to writing this review. The reason I don’t normally do this is because I don’t want to taint my review with wording from the blurb. However, in the case of The Kinsey Scale, I wanted to find out how much of the plot the blurb gives away because I wasn’t really sure how to write my review. You see, this is a really cute and sweet romance between an out and proud theater major and his not-as-straight-as-he-appears roommate; so not exactly a new story idea, but one that CJane Elliott makes endearing and believable through the characters she creates in Eric and Will.

As far as the blurb goes, Eric’s part is pretty spot on. With that said, I’m not quite so sure that Will’s is as accurate mainly because the story is told from Eric’s point of view and by the time the reader is fully clued in on Will’s feelings, I’m not convinced he was really hiding anything from himself. Then again, hindsight’s 20/20 and it’s easy for me, as the reader, to pick up on the clues Elliott leaves throughout the story regarding Will. Personally, I think it was more of a case of Will lying to himself to protect his heart and sanity rather than denying who he was to himself. That’s not to say that Will isn’t hiding some big things from those around him, because he most certainly is, and it made for a delicious, grin-inducing scene when the notorious Kinsey Scale is discussed. I must admit that I took perverse delight in watching Eric squirm when it’s Will’s turn to declare his number on the scale. In fact, I’m chuckling about it now as I write this up, it was just that amusing to me, especially considering the lengths Eric went to in order to safeguard his heart as the two men became closer and closer as colleagues and friends.

But don’t let me mislead you with my use of the words cute, sweet, and endearing, and the laugh out loud moments when describing The Kinsey Scale because by no means am I suggesting it’s a completely fluffy read. This is a new adult romance after all and Elliott certainly delivers just the right amount of angst to remind readers that we’re dealing with college students. When you add the new adult angst with a drama-prone theater major, you get one heck of a “coming out” scene when Eric discovers that Will isn’t what Eric assumed him to be and it’s so true to Eric’s character that I was surprised it took Will two hours to track Eric down. Despite my all-over-the-place review, it must be said that Elliott delivers on the angst, the fluff, the unrequited crush, the sexual tension, the BIG reveal, and the bedroom gymnastics in just the right doses to make The Kinsey Scale an entertaining friends-to-lovers romance that was even better than I’d hoped for when I began reading it. I’m delighted this is the first book in the Campus Connections series because it means there’s more angsty deliciousness to come and I cannot wait.

Please note: My review is of an unedited, pre-release copy of this book and assumes that any errors were corrected prior to publication.

This was such a lovely story. Really enjoyed it because I am pretty sure something like this has happened more than once.

I received a copy for an honest review.

Eric and Will are two C\college RAs forced to share a room due to lack of room availability. They strike up a quick friendship Eric is extremely attracted to will but believes he's straight and Will does not disprove his assumptions. Eric pretends his best friend is his boyfriend for some unknown reason. They talk a lot but not about important things. Miscommunications and Misunderstandings lead to heartache and stress. All could have been avoided if the communicated better.

Overall it was an ok read. I've read better, more emotionally deep stories from this author. Book 2 is better.

    3.5 - 4 Stars

This book was cute, but on the shorter novella side. I think the page count for this storyline was pretty spot-on and the premise, plot and story for these two guys was good and flowed well. I enjoyed reading this book since it was so quick, you can get through it easily start to finish.

Eric and Will are in college and end up being roommates and co-RA’s for their dorm. Eric is kind of oblivious when it comes to Will and everyone around him. He thinks he has Will pegged from day one as completely and totally straight, but of course, what happens when you “ass-u-me” things about people and situations? After things cleared up, it’s a pretty instant love connection for the two since they already had some awkward chemistry flowing together.

Eric and Will were both cute characters, Eric being a theater major who is totally outgoing and fun, and Will being a quieter opposite to him. The one thing I really didn’t understand and didn’t seem quite cleared up to me was Will’s hesitation about his music and why he didn’t want to put himself out there. I think a little more on that subject would have been nice. But, overall, this book was cute and well written and a good way to spend a few hours of my day.

I really liked this novella! It was a quick read, but one that wasn't just some fluffy read, although this was more sweet than one would consider sexy. I seriously liked both Eric and Will and I appreciated that it really felt as if these two had forged an honest-to-goodness friendship between them. Sure, Eric was crushing on Will, but their friendship was a wholly separate entity. Here's the thing though: for as close as these two got in the story, they sure as heck needed to work on their communication skills. They were both keeping their respective shares when it came to secrets, and I guess had they been far more open and honest from the get-go--or at least early on--then they could have spared themselves a whole lot of assumption making, and you know what they say about people who assume... But yes, I adored these two young men, and while there were several supporting characters, there was no scene-stealing going on, although Jerry and Doug--Eric's ex and younger brother, respectively--were the standouts and Jesse was certainly memorable. I enjoyed The Kinsey Scale and am excited for the series. 4.5 stars. ♥

This was nice, short and sweet story.

I liked both Eric and Will, they are sweet. The misunderstanding and friends to lovers situation was cute.

Nice story for a quick moment of evasion
